I don't know much about about the vocal side of music, but I have a strange problem. I have a pretty decent voice, and an alarmingly wide range. My speaking voice is around the pitch of La Grange by Zz Top, but I can comforably sing Chris Cornell and Layne Staley vocals. My problem is that I'm either on or off. I either have to speak so softly you can barely hear my voice, or project so loudly it would startle anyone within a 500 feet. Especially in the high register and falsetto. Anything in between sounds like air. I have to exhale heavily to get any tone at a moderate volume.

Is this something I can fix with vocal training or is it a lost cause?

Nobody here knows anything about music except geetars and synths.
I'd say ask a vocal coach.
Used to sing until I wrecked my voice but I never had your problem. Can't help much other than that.

Hm. I might just do that. It isn't only singing where I'm affected. During normal conversation I'm always told I need to speak up, but if I'm in a crowded restaurant in order to be heard at all I have to talk so loud everyone in the building can hear me. It's embarrasing.

I've been told that too.
If you have a lower pitched voice, there's a thin line between speaking level and too loud. I regularly have to tell people o can't speak any quieter without whispering.

hmmm. I think what your deal is is that you can do something called hyperglotal compression, which is how Cornell, Cobain, etc achieved those badass screams. But it doesn't seem like you have much in the way of training to be able to go higher or project in a lighter tone. Definitely don't throw away the high scream ability because it's badass. But Try doing some excersizes to get your voice working for things that aren't screams. I think humming songs, singing songs with a deep "Uh" vowel, etc are good ones. If you speak in a low register then you can definitely develope your voice to sing there too, but keep in mind high voice guys like Cornell are always going to have an easier time singing mid-highs. So it's not that important for you to sound like Frank Sinatra on the low notes. Singing at a normal level shouldn't be a hard task. I think there's muscles in your throat that are obstructing you a little bit. Just sing everything in a parody opera voice to build muscle and proper technique and then when you actually sing lighten it up and sing with your normal tone. Keep in mind also that low opera tone is hard to take up high for tenors like you, so make sure to go lighter on the high notes unless you're screaming. And whatever you do, don't change your natural singing voice too much because you'll be sad if you lose it.

Also watch this guys vids on youtube, him and Brett Manning Singing Success are the only good channels that don't pedal bullshit tips. Don't listen to the R&B black guy, he's a fucking idiot

That youtube link directs to an ad. It sounds interesting though. I may have destroyed my voice growing up, as I was big into metal. I would play along with dvds like Metallica Cunning Stunts, S&M, and as I entered my late teens and early 20s played guitar and sang backup vocals / screams in metalcore bands. I didn't really hit puberty until about 15, but when I was 12 my voice changed dramatically and I think it was stress related from abusing my vocal chords. Anyway, you should post the link to the video up.

I have the same problem dude. Like I can sing Ray Price and Johnny Cash but still sing the high part in The Logical Song. But it has to be really quiet or really loud.
