Mono has differences to what you can do with it compared to stereo (Wall of Sound; listening to Pet Sounds or any of The Beatles' albums on mono makes a world of difference).

Honestly, I'd say go for mono, there's some good stuff in the stereo but oftentimes there's some crappy full-out panning.

I mean yes but back then they produced a lot of stuff in mono and the stereo mix was an afterthought. For Sgt Pepper's the Beatles were heavily involved in the mixing of the mono version but just handed it off to whoever in the studio.

Plus a lot of those 60s stereo mixes sound like trash because they put the guitar in one channel and the bass and drums in the other

mono, but i like a few songs better in stereo (especially Mary Anne with the Shaky Hand)
