i dunno if there's a name for this, IDM, Chillwave, Trip hop.. whatever. I need more music on this vein. I found old backup cds of mine with boards of canada albums that i never really listened back then, and i dig em. They remind me of coyote clean up, tobacco, thivery corporation and tosca maybe, even.

So.. more music like those i just named? my apologies if it's too pleb for you or whatever
>>
>>73369528
Autechre is an option, but not that close. It's really difficult, Boards of canada has a really unique sound. Maybe Aphex Twin in his first two albums.
>>
>>73369528
tycho is literally BoC copycat
>>
>>73369528
I second early Aphex Twin. Oneohtrix Point Never and Four Tet might also be alternatives.
>>
>>73369768
oh yeah thanks for reminding me, i used to have awake downloaded somewhere before my computer died.

hey don't forget my other bands named, they might open up the scope a little.
I'm checking out everything as we speak btw

another band i had a whole CD of but never really checked out much.. man why did i waste my teens on muse when i found out stuff like this? thanks for the reminder
>>
>>73369808
Ya, Pause by Four Tet definitely felt a lot like BOC when I listened to it
>>
>>73369768
A very repetitive and boring Copycat.
>>
>>73369819
Blockhead's second album ''the music scene'' kindaa sounds like Thievery Corporation.
>>
Eveything I hear that sounds like BoC ends up just being a copycat. I think you'd rather search for a different sounds that gives a similar vibe.

"you could ruin my day" is lovely, i'll be checking them out in depth soon. thanks
>>73369983
ehh i dunno this sounds too techno. But i get your point, and that's why i named stuff like tosca, which i don't consider too similar in sound but they have the feel
>>
>>73370018
I think the ''feel'' BoC has is just nostalgia. They handpick samples from very old medias just to get that sound.
>>
tycho sounds nothing like boc, shut up
>>
>>73370104
can't argue with that. Literally 90% of my music has the same feel and tempo, no matter the genre.
I don't think grabbing samples from old media gives you a default nostalgia sound tho. I'm pretty sure there's dubsteps with voices sampled from old shit too

try these, not copycat but some vague similar qualities

I listen to this kind of music loads. Ulrich Schnauss and Black Moth Super Rainbow would be my top suggests. You also might like The Orb (their work from 90-97 soecifically), Caribou's first album Start Breaking My Heart, Fila Brazilla's chill work (At Home in Space and Heat Death of the Universe are good spots to start), Tycho as well though he's pretty milquetoast. His album Science of Patterns is probably his best and most in the style of BoC.

Also there's an artist called Port Blue who makes stuff directly inspired by BoC as well as Helios, The Album Leaf, Ulrich... You'll laugh your ass off when you find out who's behind Port Blue, but don't let that stop you from checking it all out. Arctic and The Airship are the two best albums, also Vogager 1 which is under the artist's real name.

i'll check out your suggestions very carefully since i know those and those are extremly accurate to what im looking for. Since you nailed it, anything else you can think of? even if not as close to this sound? thanks man

Sure. Try Lemon Jelly - they're more lively and happy, their album Lost Horizons is the place to start. Vanilla and P.Sus are two artists to check out next if you liked this.

Global Communication's 76 14 is a classic - if you haven't heard it, get it immediately. It's much more ambient, but essential listening. And This Binary Universe by BT should be just as highly regarded - really recommend this one.

There's a guy called Neat Beats who you might enjoy. His album Cosmic Surgery is easily my favorite instrumental hip-hop album ever, very spacey, sample based, and extremely unique - can't describe any other artist who sounds like this guy.

Would highly recommend The Chemical Brothers. Even though they're significantly more upbeat than most of these mentions, they have a strong analog sound and similar tone, and some of their album cuts are quite relaxed - Chico's Groove, Alive Alone, The Pills Won't Help You Now, and Snow are examples of the more laidback stuff.

Bonobo and Quantic are safe bets too. Bonobo is a bit like Thievery Corporation, and his earlier albums have the same sample-based roots as BoC, while later albums are more "original" with vocal features, live performers, etc.

With Ulrich Schnauss (who I'll recommend again), his first three albums are go tos. Not that he gets worse, those first three are just solid as fuck classics

And I agree with Anon recommending Four Tet. Rounds is a better album to start with in my opinion but Pause is just fine.

This last one might be off the wall but Beth Orton has some lovely albums in the 'folktronica' genre. Trailer Park and Kidsticks by far her best.

Can't think of many others. You might like Orbital. Much dancier, but Snivilisation and In Sides show off a great ambient house side, and progressive in the same way Fila Brazilla is. In the same vein, Sasha's got some good stuff - Airdrawndagger, Xpander, and Involver especially.

No christ yet? apparently he was in boc during boc maxima or something, im not sure but i think his music is pretty nice

This track is nostalgic as fuck, not as a 70s sampled commersial vibe but remembering being a child playing in the grass
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpGxO9bj6_4

Kettel's probably not all too similar to boc as a whole though.
>>
>>73371010
No problemo, hope you enjoy it all
>>
>>73371006
I personally enjoy:
A Night Of A Short Wave Listener
Panta Rhei
Radio Libre Albemuth
The Descent Unseen
& CIALYN - LP

I downloaded E.P. "The Dew Garden" as well.
>>
Toshack Highway. Side project of Swerverdriver. Just fucking awesome synths and bubbly melodic psych rock stuff, it's like Boards as a a band.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_KCZg7gVco

They only have the one album and EP, though Swervedriver has a few tracks like this.

Great thread.

Someone who kind of has a unique, organic-electronic sound like BOC is Amon Tobin. Bricolage is talked about on here a decent amount, but his later work never really gets discussed which is a shame because thats when he got a unique sound.

I would start with Supermodified and Out From Out Where, then go from there.

Also, try Shlohmo - Bad Vibes.

>I think the ''feel'' BoC has is just nostalgia. They handpick samples from very old medias just to get that sound.

The nostalgia feeling mostly comes from the production I think. They use classic analog synths and run their mixes through many iterations of tape saturation to emulate old broadcasts and music.

In that sense, the nostalgia is sort of superficial or artificial, but they're so good at production that it comes out really nicely.
>>
>>73376686
seconding Bad Vibes. definitely less of a jam at times, but Shlo uses downtempo and cool sampling to really build a strong feeling of nostalgia and pain throughout the album. one of my favorites
>>
>>73376686
Can't believe I forgot Amon Tobin. I really need to listen to him more.
>>
just gonna mention Plaid, seeing as no one else has
