So, /mu/, your opinion on the genre, the scene of today, the scene of yesterday, the bands? Discuss.
Is neofolk that genre where a white American plays guitar and sings, yet doesn't actually have any connection to the music of his folk? They seem like posers to me. That "genre" seems like commercial/hippy shit.
Speed folk is the future.

Also synthfolk.

20th century commercialism can't die quickly enough in my onion. People genuinely wanting to make music for others will produce something much more soulful than people getting a buck off churning out an album every year for others.

neofolk is neopagan, poetic, post industrial, spiritual folk mostly from europe
Bob Dylan is what you'd call contemporary folk or folk rock.

Current 93 > Else, btw

You mistaken neofolk and indie folk ( which I detest ) The easiest difference to spot, yet the most singnificant is the cultural and musical difference based on geography - Neofolk is Europe, when Indie is American.
Neofolk has its roots in post-punk and industrial, and has started in late 70's / early 80's. It's dark, often flirting with controversial military, totalitarian aesthetics and themes, heritage, etc. Death in June is a really good band to start: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gp7n4bcInP4

I know of Wardruna but I don't consider them folk. I know what they're doing with the runes and I wholeheartedly support it, but it has little to do with actual folk music. The Death in June song seemed more like synthpop with an acoustic guitar. The Current 93 song is legitimately pretty folky and I like it. One of the greatest things about traditional folk in my opinion is the emphasis on melody though, which all these songs are lacking in. If I wanted to hear something that sounded European, I'd more quickly listen to bluegrass than Death in June. Bluegrass has blues and jazz influence, but it still has the folky melodies.

Ah. Sorry for the mistake. It's good I made it I guess though, cause now I know what people mean when they talk about neofolk. I was more talking about the hippy/bob dylan kinda folk than indie stuff.
This is kinda cool. It seems like there's a general gloominess problem though. That synth arp it ended on was the coolest part. I wish it continued.
I'm interested in music that takes from the legitimate folk music of the past and pushes it forward without losing it's identity. What I've heard so far (obviously not much, just what's in this thread) seems pretty one-tone.
I like folk metal too, although I don't think there's much that hasn't been done in that regard. Synthfolk is what I'm really watching out for, but fashwave doesn't seem to be growing like I thought it would, so I'm pessimistic about it coming soon.

(Also I know bluegrass is also extremely commercial. I was edgily exaggerating my opinions earlier. It's not so absolute.)

>the scene of today
Pardon?

Rome, Spiritual Front, Darkwood, :Of the Wand and Moon: ... Neofolk's' not dead, buddyboi.
I like Neofolk, but I don't know much about the scene.
That being said, Neun Welten is the best I've heard outside of Death in June.

ugh, I guess that counts as being still alive
