What compressor/sustainer is a good choice and how is it used to improve the sound?
>>

what are you getting one for if you dont even know how to use it?
>>
>>73362878
if you don't care about intricacies get a sp or diamond compressor

For the sustain honestly, cant really see the difference with a compressor but i lose high notes when soloing too quickly

what adjustments do you need to make to put heavier gauge strings on a guitar?

from a 10 to 11, there can't be that much of a leap right?
>>
>>73363797
You'll need to adjust the trussrod, if you don't do that you'll have more neck relief due to the higher tension of the strings and a higher action, which will also knock your intonation off.
If you adjust the trussrod so your relief is the same as before then you won't have to adjust anything else.

I posted in gg a few days ago about this but I'll ask again. Are there any really cheap guitars/brands that are actually worth buying? I'm looking for a cheap one since my church (that I play bass for) is basically giving me a JCM 700+ 4x12 cab for free. I mainly want one just to mess with and eventually learn to play while I have a good amp

How do you go about actually learning guitar? It's a stupid question but I've been playing for about 4-5 months pretty consistently after practicing on and off for years and all I do is just learn songs I like to play. I don't know when, if ever I'll get to the point where I can, with full confidence, tell someone I play guitar, as opposed to just practicing. Do I practice techniques? Work on speed? >>73367777
nothing really wrong with that vibrato, it's fast and shrill, but that can work sometimes but it depends on where you place it.

don't limit yourself to just having one type of vibrato and use the same one everywhere, most good players use different types of vibratos in different places, it completely depends on you and what you like to hear. might sound stupid to some, but i honestly think vibrato is the most personal part of playing guitar

I currently play guitar through my bass rig which is, erm, not ideal. It's a huge hassle but I'm even fine with the overall sound I'm getting right now so I assume an amp that was actually made for guitar + all the built in pedals should work for me. Clean tone should also be fine. I don't know, still on the fence.

I have heard the 100 watts version is superior in anyway to the 50 watts version. If I were to get a katana, I would get the 100 watt one, the price is not far appart, and you get more features(fx loop, nuff said). Don't listen to toob snubs, solid state/modullation is JUST AS GOOD as tube amps, without the hassle of maintenance. However, I do advice you to try one before buying it, just so you are exactly sure what you are buying.

>ss is just as good as tube
>>
>>73378318
I probably won't ever need the additional power of the 100W version. FX loop, well you can configure that for the internal effects from what I've seen, that would only be relevant for an actual pedalboard and I don't plan on making one since I'm only playing guitar on the side.
Sound wise I heard they use the same speaker but the 100W version has a bigger cabinet and apparently sounds better, the question is how much better and if it's worth the extra cost.
The rest (more memory slots and a physical presence knob) are neat features but not super relevant I think.

Am I missing something?
>>
>>73378408
Well, I love pedals myself, so an fx loop is a must for me(Not a fan of the onboard pedals). Having extra power is always a good thing, especially when it comes to solid state, but again, a personal thing. About the speakers, I am not a fan of combos, I would get the head version, and get a cab that I like. I am simply giving my personal opinion, you do you, it is your money, and time after all.
>>
>>73376784
i have pretty good timing and don't really need to practice it that much, it's just natural for me. i can keep better timing and a groove than the drummer in a band that i'm in, he's constantly speeding shit up and rushing, even the bass player can't lock with him.
>>
>>73378493
Yeah of course, thanks for the input. I already have a half stack bass rig in the house, I can't really justify an entire guitar rig especially since I only play guitar for fun. Chances are the combo will stay at home or I'll just take it to a friend every once in a while, so yeah if I get it it'll probably be the 50W version.

>>
>>73378583

>>
>>73378594
I prefer to barre the A chord with my ring finger. That way, if I want to play a B chord, I just need to move my ring finger 2 frets up, and barre with my index finger. Just personal preference.
>>
>>73378648
>just different

>>
>>73378567
The warmth is a minor argument, as much as digital vs analog pedals but the main appeal for me is the volume, ss just doesnt sound as good cranked up
>>
>>73378732
It's like the difference between a Marshall JCM 800 vs an Orange OR120, different sounds for different tastes homie.
>>
>>73378734
Okay, I will give you that. Nothing beats a cranked tube amp, SS is getting close, but not there yet. However, that only applies to professional musicians, not to bedroom heroes, that are the majority of toob snobs that shit on SS.
>>
>>73378851
No argument from me. A small modeling amp is superior for bedroom practice in every way

I guess you are right, but that is one of my points. You NEED to crank a tube amp to really listen to its sound. You made a great point, however, remember that even 5 watt is loud as fuck at home. Meanwhile, a solid state sounds decent at any level. Consistency is the key word here. Tube amps require too many variables(tube maintenance, voltage, tempeture, etc) to really sound good, when SS is just plug and play.

Yeah I'm thinking about getting it, either one will probably stay in the 0.5W mode or low volume in 50W/25W mode but the 100 just sounds so much better. Probably the different speaker (it's not the same, I was wrong) and the bigger cabinet. 300 bucks, hmm, I guess I'll stop the work on my project bass for a month and get the 100W version with that money. I'll probably decide next week.
>>
>>73378721
Ok. What about when you aren't planning on going to a B chord? I understand it's your preference but it seems very arbitrary.

Arguably there is no 'best' fingering for any chord. It relies on context.
>>
>>73378721
if you wanna suck dicks barring with the index finger youll have to do less movement to play the B as your finger will already be at the 2nd fret

>>73379093
>ss amps do not require maintenance to sound good
fucking kek
>>
>>73379655
I mean, it's not only about playing the B chord. You can play a C chord, a C# chord, even a G# sharp chord using the same fingering. If you have studied the CAGED system, you would understand that shape is movable to any position in the neck, making the shape that I described ideal. However, guitar playing is mostly subjective. I personally think that barring the A chord with the middle finger is more convenient, unless you are planning on doing some Hendrix/Frusciante flutters.
>>
>>73379719
>if you wanna suck dicks barring with the index finger youll have to do less movement to play the B as your finger will already be at the 2nd fret

Nothing wrong with the CAGED system bruh. A good way to visualize barre chords, and the notes next to them on the neck.
>>
>>73379734
I've read up on CAGED and been playing guitar long enough to see the benefit of playing the chord that way, but I get more use out of the index barre because of what/where I tend to play. In particular a lot of inversions benefit from having the index finger already on the bottom of the neck.
>>73379719
Is right about being able to just use your ring finger for the B chord and move the index barre. That's why I thought the B chord example was arbitrary.

Playing this in open d with a brass slide is almost a religious experience. It feels so human and vocal, and very very American. It’s much louder than a regular acoustic, and plays okay, but the action is a little high as you’d expect.

I have an older model crush from 2012. The gain is terrible on it, however since it is my only amp I did perform with it using the nano big muff a few times. Sometimes I would mix it with the gain but most of the time I just ran it through the clean channel. I am unaware how much the newer ones have improved. If its cheap enough I would still consider it but I don't think it's worth it for the gain, at least mine isn't.
