Should I buy a six string fretless for jazz? I feel like the c string would make soloing easier.
Also why do all these expensive custom basses look so fucking ugly?
>>
How to best learn scales for improvising? I feel like I'm confined with box patterns. I'm currently learning the major scale to build off of. What next? My friend recommended learning the patterns of the major scale just to see how they're connected and how the fretboard works. Then he said to go through the Circle of Fifths and chord tones for the major scale. After getting a good understanding of the major scale, he said just use that information and apply it to different modes. Is there anything else I should be doing?
Sidenote, when you people first started to improvise, did you have to think about the notes within the scale at first? And with time, did you just kind of know what sounds good and your fingers just knew what to do?
>>
>>73307707
learn to find intervals, and the visual shapes will come automatically
>>
>>73307707
Learn chugging, that'll open up the fretboard for you.
But there's an additional benefit: The more chugging hours you put into your guitar, the wood opens up more, it's like burning-in your headphones.
>>
>>73307707
Learn your intervals
Any string and fret and a string down is a major fourth interval
3rd String to 2nd is a major third
Learn your modal patterns
Learn your modal circle of fifths as well
Also learn CAGED
>>
>>73307707
try learning scales in one position. everyone always seems to neglect this part. if you don't learn scales in one position you're going to be jumping all over the neck looking for root notes. try this, stay at the 5th fret and figure out how to play all 12 major keys in that position without shifting out of it.
>>
>>73308005
tldr learn interval and modes

Hey /gg/ I was wondering something about pedals/effects for bass. Would reverb be redundant/pointless with a fuzz pedal? I also plan to get something for boosting the bass. Particularly the Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI.
>>
>>73311126
Imo reverb performs ubdesireably with bass, robbing it of its balls. I suppose if you were aiming for some ambient applications it could have its place on your board. Otherwise, with bass, stick with amp's clean & overdrive, fuzz, and flange (which can provide chorus and key plane effects both).
>>
>>73310967
>Running a pick up and down the A string
lol imma teenager
>>
>>73311126
How about you try it yourself and form your own opinions instead of asking someone else what you should like?
>>
Do humbuckers on Strats add versatility or should I just stick to an SSS configuration?
>>
>>73311378
Alright. I felt like reverb may have been since it seems like that's the last thing you'd want to put on a bass. Glad I checked.

>>73311404
But that wasn't what I was wondering. I was wondering if a reverb would be pointless with some boost and fuzz already present. Ya silly billy.
>>
>>73311385

Fender buckers are usually underpowered, you would end up replacing the HB with a Duncan, when you likely would've been tickled with the power a stray bridge pickup has to cut through in a mix

>>
>>73311426
You wont find a better lead tone that cuts like a humbucker. Fat strat is a good compromise, but swap the bridge pup from the stock.
>>
>>73311720
P90 cuts through a mix better than either single cool or humbucker, just invest in a noise gate, lol
>>
>>73311777
Youre objectively wrong, and noise gates are a meme
>>
What's a good resource to really learn "rhythm"? I want to become a groove master.
>>
>>73311872
...then make your case. If I'm "objectively" wrong, then you will be able to reference observable differences that support your arguement. Otherwise, this is just a baseless claim.
For my part, I will no remind us all that a p90 is a humbucker without the him cancelling afforded by reverse winding/polarity. It's a noisy humbucker.

Are lessons worth it? I'm intermediate but I hit a serious plateau and i'm tired of just copying all the famous rock and country songs, I want to delve into some serious blues and jazz.

My Uni offers courses for guitar and i'm on the brink of enrolling, but I don't know if that is better than lessons. I live in Baton Rouge so good teachers aren't exactly high in demand or supply

Looking to get a Les Paul Standard 2016 model from guitar center.

Do you think I can negotiate the price to 1800 out the door? What price should I try to shoot for out the door?
>>
>think a song is in the key of B
>wrong it was in D just using the pentatonic shape in the relatice major

idk if it really works that way but all the chords are in the key of D and this guitar part was in the shape 1 7th position so i thought it was in B which makes it the relative minor of D
so is the song in the key of D still?
ah...

I posted this before, trying to get a more 'defined' distortion tone seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMDGO8RjJEg [Embed]
but the only pedals I have are a Big Muff, a boss sd-1 (yellow mid-boosting overdrive) and a boss blues driver clone. I feel like the muff will be too 'wall-of-sound' and mushy to get the distortion definition so I want to try and make the tone of the Big Muff more piercing with the sd-1 placed before it, bringing the mids back in that the big muff scoops, making it more well heard. Will something like this work/sound defined enough?
I just want to get it to work with what I've got, and I can't turn up because I live in a complex.

Nobody ever talks about chord scales. You can build a chord from each note of the scale. If you can see the scale around each inversion of the chord, you'll have an easier time with modes.

>>73313235
My first impression is that you need a metronome. Practise each chord change individually but, more importantly, strum don't scrape.

Where can I get backing tracks with certain instruments muted? (Or even better, all the instruments separated and I can combine them myself.)

One of the reasons I never became a great guitarist is because I'd just play the parts I liked over and over.

There's a huge difference between Squire tier and good maple fretboards. I used to not see the appeal but all it took was to play a nice maple once and it changed my mind.

Hey I love bands like black sabbath/sleep/the sword/ect. Really doomy slow and heavy stuff that I really enjoy playing. I'm trying to get that 70's treble boosted stoner metal sound with my Yamaha high gain modeling amp. The amps distortion is pretty decent, but I'm wondering if i would be better treble boosting the amps distortion and turning the gain down, or if I should find an overdrive/treble boost combo pedal like the Friday Club PD-100 or something. Just a bedroom player so I don't need to be spot on, just close enough to play Into the Void, A National Acrobat, Dragonaught, ect.

not being a dick, but get a metronome. You have the fingers, but slow down a little bit and breathe. Don't let the fingers do the thinking and try to build some chops and not run scales up and down.
>>
>>73323685
usually the best way to clean up a distorted sound is to dime the volume knob on the guitar down a bit. also maybe using something similar to a fuzz face might help with the sound. you can crank both the treble and gain and use the volume knob to clean it up

Get a used Ampeg B2-Re.

Amazing solidstate bass amp that sounds just like an SVTpro 3. The design has been around since the 60s but for whatever reason they re-named it a few years ago into the 'portaflex' series to be more in line with the classic 60s lineup.

As a result the B2-re which is the same thing, is cheap used.

Its 450 watts, but it has a -15db pad for playing in a low volume situation and a limiter.

effects loops and etc etc. Its a professional level bass head that's sort of forgotten and great priced and light weight which is good for gigging and thanks to the limiter low volume for home use.

No tubes to break but has that perfect Ampeg sound anyway.

For cabs I run mine through a SVT classic cab but that's expensive. Worth it but you'll be fine with a cheap speaker til you can afford a nice set. Make sure its rated for low hz though. Don't get a guitar speaker. Bass cabs can play guitar but guitar can't play bass.

The 9 band eq is fabulous. I mean it sounds fucking great.

Any cab will do starting out from the GC used listing. Though I would personally try to get a Fender or Ampeg or maybe crate. You could potentially plug the b2re into the pa though and save yourself the trouble.

>>73332146
Customs cost a lot because a Squire bullet is made in about 3 hours by some gooks getting paid $4 an hour. IT has cheap wood glued together covered in paint to hide the shit wood. The metal is mystery metal from china the wiring is watered down copper on overwired refridgerator magents.

The custom shop has a USA man building it by hand. They have to find a piece of wood that's big enough to have a guitar carved out of it. The metal is Iron and chromium so it wont rust. The wire is pure copper so there is less resistance and not a muddy overwound tone. The pots actually do something. The finish is applied over several days instead of 2 hours. etc.

A Mexican guitar is a strat but its cheaper for a reason. Its not the same thing at all even if it looks like it on the surface.
>>
>>73333974

>>73333954
They really do. And I sold my Korean DEAN dave mustaine to get it and havn't looked back since.

I sold my:
Chinese Squire Jazzmaster
Mexican telecaster
Mexican Jag-Stang
Korean Schecter Omen
Korean Dean Dave Mustaine V
Mexican P bass
Mexican Jbass
Epiphone SG probably Chinese not sure.

All the guitars had the same muddy bullshit tone and I soon realized its because all the pickups are just cheap magnets with cheap wire wrapped too much around it going through cheap wire to cheap pots.

The Gibsons I have now are infinitely better. The electronics actually let you hear the guitar instead of muddy distortion covering up the plywood and glue holding together foreign bullshit.

>>73334005
Not too much actually. Merely the fact that the Custom shop will make you the guitar you want. What radius? What neck profile? How hot do you want your pick ups senpai? What body contours? What fret size?

The USA ones are great, but they are production and they are all the same. If you want a '57 soft V medium frets with a 12'' radius with stacked humbucker invaders you can't get that from the production line.

Also, the USA factory will occasionally let lemons slip through, usually with the finish or with the quality of the wood.

Fender makes so many variations on the USA production line though you probably don't need a custom shop. If I wanted a strat they have the EJ strat which is spot on with my taste. They also have a model for every year of the early days from 57 to the CBS days in the 70s.

That's a great fucking amp for the price. I'm not even a meal guy, but the brown setting sounds pretty rad. Effects are on point, power control is a great feature, has a bite, nice headroom, great 12' speaker.

What else can a modern day man want (except for a gf)?

I've been playing acoustic for ~6 months now and I have to press down very hard. I can't do bar chords at all and simple playing is killing my hands.

My calluses are extremely thick so it's not the tips but my actual fingers that are hurting. I do the stretches and everything btw. I just put new strings on and I'm pretty sure they are medium so it shouldn't be that hard to play normal.

Is my action too high or something or is my grip strength garbage?
>>
>>73337417
>medium
What was the actual gauge?
Measure the height of the low e string at the twelfth fret it should be between 3/32" to 7/64 and the high E no lower than 1/16.
This is pretty much ideal, but I have no idea what kind of condition the frets/neck/truss adjustment are in. That all has to be checked and adjusted as needed before lowering the action.

The neck is the expensive part of the guitar. If its made by cutting corners it wont last 5 years. The metal will rust out because it probably isn't SS. You'd have to replace the pots too likely, unless you don't use them and leave them at 10, but then you're really missing a huge chunk of electric guitar playing.

If you want to throw $300 of electronics into your ply wood good ahead. There's a good chance you won't be playing guitar after high school anyway to realize that the ply wood didn't age well.

You're wasting money though.

The Seymour duncans I put in the jagstang didn't help it overcome its bad neck construction and worn out bridge.

What would I know though, i have so little experience with foreign guitars. I bet your squire is much better than the ones I had.

>>73337194
Are you really attempting to claim your cheap modeling amp is comparable to that Fender Twin?

It probably makes your Epiphone Les Paul JR sound great where as the twin would reveal the bullshit that your guitar is.

GTFO out of here.

I took one listen to all the modeling amps in guitar center and instantly knew they were trash. Even the Super champ XD sounded bad and it has tubes.

The problem with those amps is they don't have enough processing power to actually model the amps well. That's why Helix or Fractal sounds 10x better than Spider amps.

Sorry but the katana is not good. Its for beginners with epiphones. Every guitar sounds the same through it.

You should have bought a blues Jr or a roland solid state over that junk.

>>
>>73338210
Many guitar centers are reducing inventory heavily as the end draws closer. They don't want to get stuck with thousands of dollars of guitars on hand when they have to do liquidation sales. They probably just sold what they had and didn't reorder anything but the most popular in small amounts telling customers they will order whatever they don't have.

Guitar music is not popular and millennials in general don't like hobbies that aren't weed and alcohol.

Oh im sorry little butthurty

scientist made a perfect equation to cheaply emulate a sound and you're butthurt because you spend a trillon dollar on meme 60 year old technology because "it has a warmer sound" and "i can tell the difference i have a nice year"

This the same happens in all other places of human culture.

The same is for everything, people just buy expensive stuff to compensate for small dicks and feel superior, many things have been objectively proven to be exactly better at the medium range.

You seem to be the assblasted one. Not even the guy you responded to but you sound a little special. I've owned a dozen amps from crappy solid states to high end vintage tube amps and there is definitely a difference. Each amp has its own distinct voice. I prefer the sound of a hot tube amp, it just seems more organic than playing through a piece of circuit board. The tone is more pleasing to the ear and a good amp will get some nice breakup when it gets hot while not sounding like the staticy fake drive sound you get from a solid state. If you want to play disgusting sounding metal with your "distortion" knob pegged to 10 then a solid state works fine, anything where you need clean sound to slightly burning you just can't beat a tube amp, you really can't.

>>73313235
Don't let those mean anons get to you. Learning guitar takes a long time. After practicing every day for a year, you'll see a difference.

Hell I only see myself growing as a musician in intervals of a year. Sadly the voocaroo link is broken for me so I can't give you precise feedback, but generally:

1)Practice with a metronome
2)Learn the "cowboy" chords or "open" chords
3)Learn notes on 5th and 6th string
4)If you have the money - don't be afraid to find a teacher. Progress with a teacher is much quicker. It's basically a pay to win shortcut, if you, ofcourse, still practice at home and not only during lessons.

I highly recommend it as a bedroom/practice amp. It really sounds great and it's versatile as hell. As for pedals, it just seems to vary. Some pedals sound just fine, others sound muddy and awful. I mostly just use a looper, so I don't have any issues. I came across a solution the other day that said if you adjust the compressor settings via the THR desktop app, pedals work much much better. Haven't gotten around to trying it yet, but I plan on messing with that when I get a chance.
