Topsters only goes to 12 x 12, so if we want to do this we need a lot of charts.
I do like the idea.
>>
>>73303099
What's the criteria for this? Like, one album per artist, and stuff like that.
>>
>>73303304
The book includes half of the Beatles discography so I think everything is fair. 1001 albums starting in 1955 and going to the present day.
>>

The criteria is the title.

The first thing to establish is how far do we want to go back. 100 years? 150? I think that would be fair. Change the title to 150 Years of Albums.

1867 - The Blue Danube

What should represent 1868?

I just heard an Edison recording from 1878 so I think 150 years is fair. The previous decade makes for a nice preface especially starting with Blue Danube
>>
>>73303890
Give me an album from 1867 please.
Or even from 1917.

Lets keep going in order. At a glance I didn't notice anything for 1868
>>
>>73303099
Fuck i can't even read
>>
>>73304195
I guess maybe we could start at 1917 because I didn't really notice anything else until 1873 when Home On the Range was apparently first published as a song in a local newspaper.

I dunno I haven't heard it yet hang on.
>>
>>73304401
No I guess not. Ok how about 75 years starting at 1942? I think that's more than fair. We could start with Fats Waller who died just the next year.
>>
Honestly we could probably have a single chart of the first 80 or so years of those 150.
Also, are we going to ditch the 1001 concept? I'm fine with that.
>>
1001 Albums In 88 Years of Music

Not including Pinetop - Boogie Woogie is so offensive it makes me physically ill. It's technically 1928 but it was published on December 29 so that basically makes it a new years eve song for 1929. According to our board standards it would actually go in 1929 aoty contention. Also Pinetop actually died that same year. The Boogie Woogie literally killed him. Pinetop died to give birth to rock and roll.
>>
1001 Albums Since 1950

Was The Ink Spots debut in 1950 the first album from a band with an actual band name?
>>
Nick Drake's discography
Velvet Underground's discography
Beefheart's discography
Red House Painter's discography
Animal Collective's discography
Leonard Cohen's best albums
Built to Spill's best album
Fill up the rest with meme classical

And that's about it for good music
>>
I'm guessing this will be a 10 part series? Each chart 100 albums?
>>
Oh nevermind that Ink Spots album is actually a compilation of singles from the 40s. Either way I insist that 1950 should be the starting year. I'm open to earlier but I just don't think the competition is there. 1950 seems to be basically the very first years of what looks to be a contemporary music industry. Of course we could start it off at 1947 if that would be better for an even 70 years. 1947 also looks to be a better contender for the very first year of a contemporary recording industry.

Music Out of the Moon: Music Unusual Featuring the Theremin - Themes by Harry Revel (Capitol CC-47) is an album consisting of six songs on three 10-inch, 78 rpm records by bandleader Les Baxter and composer Harry Revel with theremin player Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman released on Capitol in April 1947.[3] Music Out of the Moon is considered the best-selling theremin record of all time.[1]

Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that landed the first two humans on the Moon.

The Hollywood producer Mickey Kapp compiled a cassette tape of tracks from the album for astronaut Neil Armstrong, who brought the tape on the Apollo 11 moonfight in 1969.[8][9] He played it from the spacecraft during the flight back from the moon when it was about 275,000 kilometres from earth, and explained to Mission Control, "That's an old favourite of mine, about – It's an album made about 20 years ago, called Music Out of the Moon."[10] (NASA audio recording)
>>
I've listened to about 800 of the albums in the book currently and most of what's in there is already mentioned on /mu/.
>>
Music Out of the Moon was also noteworthy for being one of the very first albums to feature a full color cover – a risqué photograph by Paul Garrison of partially clothed actress Virginia Clark of the Earl Carroll Theatre, Hollywood,[4] sprawled across a bed – which made it stand out in an era of monochrome album packaging.

How many good albums would we need in a year? The first full album that I believe to be musically significant in my library would be Negro Sinful Songs by Leadbelly, in 1939. Maybe we should start in '37, since there is some stuff there.
>>
>>73305708
I think 1947 is the magic number according to rym. Seven charts for 7 decades.
>>
>>73305762
I think even just one is fine. I'm actually more concerned about a maximum.
>>
>>73305779
how about we do that and then have one single chart for stuff before then?

That sounds good. I definitely want Pinetop - Boogie Woogie from 1929 which I was tempted to start with considering The Great Depression but just going through rym I didn't really see enough which was still just a glance.

I also feel like if we're going back that far we should just do 1001 Albums In 100 Years
>>
It should start with Robert Johnson and continue until the present day, since any form of music that's relevant derives from blues.
>>
>>73305965
Wut, fuckin Boogie Woogie's older than that kid. Actual published songs that are literally "the blues" with it in the song titles and everything, goes back to at latest about 1865. The first recorded melody was in 1860 which literally no one was ever able to actually play until a few years ago. Then Edison invented the phonograph in 1877 and recorded Mary Had A Little Lamb the next year in 1878

Robert Johnson lol good one
>>
And I meant that Pinetop - Boogie Woogie is older than his first recording which I'm showing as 1938. Boogie Woogie is 1929 and it might as well just be Nirvana for all the difference there is.
