Is this somebody's idea of a joke?

i really don't know how i feel about this album.
John Darnielle is such a dull vocalist for me and i can only recall how the opening track sounds. i haven't heard mountain goats before this though, honestly.

If you've never heard him before this, diving into his new stuff is maybe not the best way to start out. I don't mean for this to sound pretentious, but to really appreciate his current work you kind of need to listen to his back catalog first.

I'm perpetually like 5 years behind on understanding what he's doing.

It's happened so consistently so many times that now I just plan on not liking the album when it first comes out and look foreword to the day a few years down the line when I'll revisit it and really love it.
