I can't tell if hes a good lyricist or not.
He's very good, it's just that his popularity among pseuds kinda taints him by association.

Listen to the KCRW version of the Mercy Seat, or Higgs Boson Blues.
His early material definitely bordered on edgy teen poetry but when he's not bogged down with shitty production he can be great.

but lyrics don't matter, silly

that's like saying the words don't matter in memes
a nick cave song without his lyrics is like cheezburger cat without 'can i haz cheezburger' caption
He is one ugly guy, makes me feel confident

It's not his fault you like him.
Every album has at least one decent song.
Read the lyrics to Higgs Boson Blues, Dig Lazarus Dig, We Call Upon The Author, etc.
Then you have the album Boatman's Call which is simply a masterpiece.
Cave purposefully used cliche phrases on songs like 'Idiot Prayer', like "we'll meet again", it takes two to tango", "what can I say", and it's one of the best songs ever written.
Guy is a fucking savant
anybody else seeing him in NY on tuesday?
Listen to his copycats (try the Drones' first album), and notice how much more meticulous Cave is with his lyrics. He may not be the most quotable lyricist on the planet, but notice how much better he is at setting the mood.
He also does
>mysterious loner with a pair of cowboy boots
>homicidal goth
>my baby left me, but I have a strayan accent
>religious nihilist
>tfw no Flannery O'Connor as a gf (until he got married)
better than anyone else, except maybe Michale Gira.

I don't know, I'm to busy focusing on his God-tier vocals to care.

Fuck off, clearly lyrics matter. They just don't matter to you.
