He seems pretty cool until you realize that he's just an aged and cynical image-obsessed hipster. He seems to be largely contrarian just to fuck with the status quo that early 2000s pitchfork created.

Despite that, I still like him.

I think he just likes pointing out artists' pretensions, especially with those whose main appeal is in how they're marketed.

When I think "image-obsessed" I think someone who ONLY sees the surface level presentation, which is not what Ott does. If anything he recognizes that image has a strong effect on an artist's appeal, and he takes them to task for it. Look at the Disentegration Loops podcast for example, much of that album's initial success was due to how it was associated with 9/11. So I think it's completely fair for him to pick apart that image and question just how much the music itself had to do with the album's acclaim.

I quite like that unlike other rock critics, he tends to be very skeptical of hagoiography and reputation.

I wish he made at least a few more of these.
