Minimalism general.
Post recs, discussion of notable pieces, or anything pertaining the genre. I'm pretty new to the style so I'd love to discover more compositions.

I'm in love with pic related's synergy of minimalism or avant folk but can't find anything remotely similar. Any recommendations?
Does Ambient belong here? I need good Ambient recs (I've heard Eno already), and also some ambient pop, so far I've listened to Insides - Euphoria and AIR - Talkie Walkie. pls help

>>73294676
for Adams and Riley I prefer Nixon In China and A Rainbow In Curved Air respectively
Reminder that Minimalism only applies to repetition-based music from 1965-1970 in New York.
Everything afterwards is nebulously called "Post-Minimalism."
>>73294676
>also not part of the movement but it's also very similar and most likely based off of Riley
Manuel Gottsching: Inventions for Electric Guitar
>>73294726
thats pretty reductive, and not in a positive way i think
>>73294884
It's the truth. Minimalism doesn't apply to inuititive melodic developments in Drumming, MF18M, Einstein, etc
>>73294726
It is rather like punk in the sense that it is almost a dead end from the start. Punk had to diversify in to post-punk, pop punk etc. to stay relevant and fresh, and minimalism needed to do the same. Not sure Glass got the memo though as his recent operas have been pretty uncreative.
Ingram Marshall is minimalist/post-minimalist that is worth hearing too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvfxl96bPXE
>>73294920
yes it does.
repetition does not box out intuition nor melody
>>73294992
Did you read my post kid
Intuitive melodic development is what happens in MF18M where you have a less organized approach to the form, more based on appealing additive rhythms that recede into drones and whatnot
It has nothing to do with insulting Minimalism, I love it. But the facts are facts.
>>73295157
Oh even without your trip you can shitpost nonsense.
>>73295157
you a chock a block full of assumptions, little guy.
when john cage repeats that he has nothing to say and that he is saying it, the work is both a rejection of say intuition (by having nothing to say) and via a repetitive or gridded structure and its also entirely based on a personal intuition in that anything at all was chosen as the initial piece used for development.
why dont you go debate sub-genres somewhere
a philosophy aint a format

pretty interesting. not music i'd expect from a 4chan bandcamper. something i'd actually listen to. not sure its /minimal/ though. i see influence from 20th century classical music and it seems based around a repetitive groove and pattern but theres so much going on it feels more like krautrock. i guess its kinda similar to something like arnold dreyblatt's - animal magnatism mixed with like zuckerzeit/ sowieso era cluster or something.

Love me some fucking Philip Glass, Max Richter and John Adams

>>73328301
>>73327617
are you enjoying it?
>>73328589
what are the essential Adams and Richter works?
whats some good poppy minimalism/ post minimalism? or on the flipside mimalist popular music stuff?
i love the fast paced vocal works on daniel lentz's on lepard altar, wim mertens - maximizing the audience, soft verdict in general, and basically all of david bordens stuff
then on the minimalist poppy stuff i love francis bebey, insides - clear skin, i guess i could count fishmans - long season, etc...
I know some of you purists may disagree with me but i like to think of this work as being related to minimilism. something ive been thinking about a lot.
i feel it uses repeated poppy melodic motifs and slow phasing in a philip glassesqe way in order to comment on music , sexuality, gender and race. she uses "low brow" musical modes-- fl studio preset soundfonts, lil john samples, airhorns, etc. within a compositional form related to academic minimalism. in doing this she-- as a native american, latinx transwomen-- throws a wrench in the gears of the cishet white centric world of art music which in many ways appropriated repetitive african and latin american rhythmic musics and hindustani classical music. it comments on that history of appropriation and celebration of the white artist genius while cultural output of its sources goes largely unrecognized. it enters minimalism into modern conversations about identity politics.
>>73329364
I may have some more stuff like that - I shared the Lentz and Borden stuff in the last thread.
I'm glad someone else likes them.

I would like to make more music like this but the synthesizer I was using belongs from my school which I just graduated from. I make other music but can't really continue in that style as the central part to it is sounds I could only achieve through that synth or buying modular set up thats far more expensive than I can afford right now. Although I do have a lot of recorded improvisations I could possibly use.
