Not necessarily. It's a great gateway to get children into musicianship, graduate them to other instruments once they're older and have a better theoretical understanding. But if you're one of those dickheads that walked around the hallways back in high school playing the same few chords thinking they were special for doing so, then you're the disgrace, not the instrument. Found a little plastic Uke at an antique mall a couple years ago. It's surprisingly versatile. Great use of $10.

What tunings are these things in, and can they be tuned open? I might invest in one as a mini guitar for the folk stuff I play.

Ukulele's are tuned in a weird way, G4–C4–E4–A4, the G is tuned an octave higher than what one would expect, contributes to its sound a ton.

I haven't personally heard of any other tunings but I'm sure they exist, do some digging and you'll for sure find some stuff.
