Depressive Black Metal is basically post-rock / crescendocore but with scabrous production quality and orc wizard vocals.

Prove me wrong.

music is music, we like to call shit 'genres' because of tone & production values

i can't because modern bands are really terrible

luckily there's still stuff like Recluse, Teitanblood, Portal (yeah they are not BM but their stuff is really atmospheric), Death Worship, or Culte des Ghoules, who carry on the flame

Knd of agree, but I feel this stuff generally described as depressive black often has really similar song structures, dynamics, and rhythms to crescendo-y post rock.

Just listening to Portal today. Love them.

But I feel like Spectral Lore, for instance, who I really like, still remind me a lot of post-rock. That kind of cyclical, triplet-strumming riffage that mournfully builds and builds up to epic peaks.

The style of strumming, and the almost emo-y build-ups are what they share the most. So many triplets.

I'm liking that Recluse album you posted, thank you.

To be honest I kind of suspect that a lot of these young bands first learned music listening to / playing along with emo, postrock, hardcore song structures, slowcore, etc. So much of this new stuff is just post-rock or post-emo with black metal distortion pedals, atmospherics, and vocals.

Like, I really think all this post-rock in metal clothing really needs to get called out for what it is.

A lot of metal's strength and aggression is lost when it's built on that post-rock or sadcore structure. It becomes more based in a kind of suburban emo-y skinnykid headspace, like a really weak, limp-wristed, weepy kind of energy.

fucking hell Death Worship are intense.

you weren't kidding about any of those bands.
