How popular are /mu/core Japanese artists in Japan anyway?
>>73260856
Very popular.

I just posted this >>73254893. There are musicians /mu/ talks about a lot more than we do. However artists like Boris, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Flower Travellin' Band, Happy End, Hosono Haruomi, Sakamoto Ryuichi, and Melt Banana are very all much popular here.

No, it depends on the artist. I rarely hear mention of artists like Fukui Ryo or Fishmans. Merzbow is sortof known well here in Tokyo but American and European posters talk about him more.

What's the music underground scene like in Toyko? Are gaijins allowed to watch?
>>73261496
Very large and I think larger than any scene in Europe or America. Remember Tokyo is not just city, also todÅfuken like a "state" you have over there. It is very large too. Yes I do see many of gaijin now. I do not think there is any rules against that.
fishmans are very popular in japan

It depends. They are "popular" but I don't know if I am understand how you are using the word. Example, Godspeed You Black Emperor I think are "popular" in their scene but I would guess they are not really popular over all? Am I wrong?

Would the average young Japanese know of them?
>>73261782
No. However, more probably in Tokyo. The average young Japanese know artists like Greeeen, Sheena Ringo and definitely J-pop like Arashi or J Soul Brothers..

Is Merzbow just as much as a meme there? I can't see the average person knowing who he is otherwise
>>73261446
Boris, YMO, Flower Travellin' Band, Hosono Haruomi, Sakamoto Ryuichi, and Melt Bana are all great and I wish /mu/ would talk about them more. I just don't get Happy End though. Is it just their place in history? They're so bland to me.

I am from the north and not from Tokyo. I moved here a few years from now here for university. I saw him live with Haino Keiji. I think I know what you mean. Yes he is sort of like a meme. However he is still popular here in Tokyo. I never understood his music.

>Is it just their place in history?
Yes they were very important in the direction of Japanese music when the 1970s started. Very influential. Happy End and Kazemachi Roman are like our Pet Sounds.
