I do this all the time, though I have minimal music theory knowledge so I just go "ah, that sounded cool"
rarely amounts to anything good though since I am a shit composer.
There's an excellent channel on youtube called Rick Beato. He's a great teacher for this kind of thing, and theory in general

i watch music theory videos for my compositions i just think people think music theory is a dense and boring topic. this is partially justified since i thought the same thing with dense words like tritone substitution and secondary dominants
