I think the cold, sterilized sound of a drum machine fit perfectly with Big Black's music and made it all the more disorienting and aggressive.

The mechanical sound worked. It made the music appear colder and contrasted his vocals and guitar.

This is somewhat of the reason why I'm using a drum machine right now instead of live drumming, basically I want that industrial/noise rock sound to anchor the fury of abrasive guitar and vocals.
