IIRC even the most popular noise artists like Merzbow or Wolf Eyes or Prurient or whoever don't actually make enough money from noise music to live off it.

Well making harsh noise in general is more fun when it's done with hardware like mixers and pedals, but you can make it with some recording software and FX plugins....However it takes more effort and sounds better with hardware :p

Also, regarding being famous, you could easily do noise on the side and produce more accessible stuff to appeal to more crowds.
