Yep, and they shouldn't even have that money-bringing system coupled with an academic setting in the first place. Anyone who thought that was a good idea is crazy and hasn't met college students. This is bound to trigger some, but I just feel like the whole college sports system is a bit grimy. The fact that you can be accepted to an academic institution on the basis of an ability irrelevant to academics is beyond me. I know it's because of money but I'm still appalled.

Yeah, what I think is even sort of worse is the ones I know who do have a secure job and are making good money (all STEM) are essentially being coddled with all this money they now have and the behavior they exhibit that would normally be considered irresponsible, dangerous, and/or impulsive for an adult is now just easily remended in the form of cash. Such a system offers no space for personal growth.

My friend from high school, for example, did chemical engineering at university and is now making almost 100k and he recently bought a very expensive car and ended up wrecking it. He thought it wasn't a big deal and neither did those around him. He wasn't from a wealthy family originally so I was shocked to see him act like this.

This is exactly what I'm noticing of my friends.

I got a shitty humanities degree and I'm making $30k and living at home. I'm not thrilled but I guess I didn't really expect anything else at this point.

Meanwhile I have a couple friends with CS degrees working for Lockheed/Northrop type companies literally making $100k at 23 years old, living in luxury apartments, driving brand new cars, etc.

I hate to say it but they seem so different now. Or maybe I'm different. Idk. It's like they treat me like I must be so jealous of them and their money. And I kinda am. But I don't think I act like it as much as they expect me to act like it.

It's really straining our friendship because they just flaunt their cash and are constantly buying round after round of drinks, like "ohh, don't worry about it, I got you, I got you, it's nothing!"

"Prestige" in the US is so fucking stupid. I'm Danish but also American and have lived my life split between the two countries. In Denmark, no one cares where you go really. Whether you go to college or not, if you are doing something with your life then good for you. America just seems fucking autistic in that regard. I'm going to the most "prestigious" school in Denmark but it was very accessible and no one cared that I got in. You guys obsess over all these wealthy colleges with wealthy students, who as individuals are actually truly fucking awful. If you don't get into fucking Princeton then it's the end of the world and if you do then you cry hysterically with excitement.

That's not healthy. It should be about the education and not the brand after all.
