I've been trying to diversify my tastes recently and been listening to country, also as a way of getting better at guitar. I can enjoy stuff like Hank Williams I & III, Johnny Cash, Angry Johnny and the Killbillies, Hasil Adkins, because they all have a sort of dark or trippy sound to them. I also like the songs Weedeater do that are like psychedelic country with lots of weird slides and distortion, can anyone recommend me more country that gets away from the 'friendly' Nashville sound? Thanks
Dark Country is a genre.

Antic Clay
> dark americana, blues
Only released one double-album, but it's a pretty damn good one. Recommended if you like Nick Cave at his most Southern Gothic

16 Horsepower
> pretty much THE essential dark country group
Their later releases moved away from the more 'pure' and rustic country sound, but everything I've heard by them is good imo

Wovenhand
> psychedelic folk, gothic country
David Eugene Edwards (16 Horsepower's frontman) moved on to this project, still going to this day. A lot more psych elements here.
