What is /mu/'s opinion on Dave Matthews?
I honestly don't know what to think. He's talented for sure. But something is off for me. It feels a little pretentious.
Every time a Dave Matthews song comes on, I listen to it, but I don't really get into it.
Anyone know what I mean?

Undisputed King of 1990s frat boy rock.

You probably aren't white enough to appreciate him.
I don't hate him. This is actually a little concerning to me, because there's something fundamental about his music, that I can't even explain, that's obviously lame as fuck, but I can't bring myself to hold it against the dude. #41 is one of my favorite songs of the 90s.

i don't understand why dave was so popular with 90s bros. i mean, he was the "crunchy" popular artist, the male version of alanis morisette. why the fuck did bros love him so much and why did they wear birkenstocks so hard?
under the table and dreaming is a masterpiece by the way.

That solo about sums up DM for me.
There's some cool stuff in there, uncommon chord forms and structure, but it turns into a jumble of acoustic rock wankery.
lol I live in the Dave Matthews neighborhood in Washington and have met him before. He seems fine I guess... only famous person I've ever met
i've heard rumors he's extremely bisexual
when I was too young to really have my own taste, my brother was obsessed with DMB and brought me to a bunch of concerts with him. I've seen them sort of recently too, because he thinks we have this bonding thing over the band, so I'll still go when he wants me to.
The thing w/ DMB, is that they stand in this really weird in-between place for music. All of the members are super super talented, but they play relatively accessible music. To people who are mostly only familiar w/ radio top 40, or whatever was on MTV in the 90's, DMB appears to be way better than they actually are, and since they're shows always contain different setlists, and have /some/ degree of improvisation, they have the same 'draw' that a band like the grateful dead or phish has, where the audience obsesses over specific versions and is always begging for more.
Their music has a shit connotation to it, it's labeled as frat boy bro music. A majority of the fanbase is exactly that. Dave is actually a pretty interesting guitar player and creative songwriter, and a good performer, but DESU Carter (drummer) is actually what makes the live shows good. He turns their songs into a huge sounding production. The shows are energetic and fun, and if you can temporarily suspend your musical snobbery and get fucked up at a DMB show, you'll probably have fun. In retrospect, they're a good transition band to getting into some more legit improv based music like jazz, the grateful dead, and phish
I always thought his music was for plebs, but after reading this blog post I gained a large amount of meaning in his lyrics:
