is 28 yo too old to start playing seriously?

im not a total noob but too far away from being even an intermediate player

i know scales major minor harmonic pentatonic, most shit like that
most chord figures maj7 m7 ,triads etc

i've never played in a band

would it be feasible at my age to make a profession out of this?
>>
>>73192084
Oh yeah, and check out the impulse response pack in the OP. I think most of them are based on stuff like Mesa Boogie cabs, but it doesn't hurt to try them out when they're free. What cabinet impulse you're using makes a much bigger difference for the tone than what amp sim you have.

Theory question that is really confusing me:

What the fuck is up with dominant 7th chords? Are they major or minor or what?

An example of what I mean: if I play 12 bar blues in G, and use the chords G7 (I), C7 (IV) and D7 (V), how come I can play over it using the G MINOR pentatonic scale, even though each of those three chords has a MAJOR third, and each of thirds are not found within the natural G minor scale?
>>
>>73192234
>>73192231
what training times we takling about? can you become good on one hour per day? 4 hours per day? 8 hours per day?

how to get good expression besides good technique? Do i have to practice being expressive just like people practice technique?

or do i have to do drugs and have a mystical experience to have deep music? how to get poetry in my life? this seems like a really stupid question but i want to make touching music
>>
>>73192245
....so you just put 3 strings on it? revolutionary my man
>>
>>73192261
That is the very basic of blues.

From a classical point of view blues is objectively wrong, you CANNOT have a major and a minor third at the same time according to classical harmony.

In blues you can, the quick explanation to this is that it doesn't have to obey classical harmony, because its partly based on african music, which is obviously non european

Hello fellow anon, 28 year old here too and I just started from scratch last week. The first thing I'm doing when I get back from work is picking up the guitar, I'm fucking loving it. I'm managing not to let my age bring me down as the fact is I've had many opportunities to learn in the past and just couldn't be arsed, now I've actually got the drive and commitment for it I should seize the day and just go for it.

I don't really give a shit if I'm never going to be Leo Kottke, if I get to a stage where I can sing my favourite Bob Dylan songs and entertain a few people at a pub open mic night then I'd be chuffed.

Why are you all so triggered by Chappers?

He's literally living the dream of every single one of you and you're jealous of him. He's just a regular ass guy, not super attractive, chubby, wears glasses, and plays guitar. All he did was start a youtube channel that lead him to becoming big enough to starting his own guitar company.
He gets to try every single piece of gear he wants at Andertons, tours with his band, and gets paid loads of money from youtube views, his company, touring and everything else.
All because he was some nerdy guitar enthusiast who started a youtube channel.

So you'll hate him, you'll talk shit on him. All because of jealousy.

>>
>>73193253

No, don't come at me like he's an elitist talking down to me. What he said was just incorrect, and showed a lack of basic theory knowledge. It WOULDN'T depend what tuning it was, the chord would still be a b7#9 regardless of the root note.

From what he said it looks like he thought "b7" referred to the note "B" rather than the interval flat seventh.

>>
>>73192261
The chords themselves are major but like you can play major or minor over them because of the instability of the chord or something

Try hammering on/sliding from the minor third to the major third, that's quite a fun sound. Can work the other way too but not always.

It depends on the mood and tempo etc I don't fucking know
>>
>>73193812
I'd rather just buy something high quality once instead of buying something cheap and having to replace it when I get a decent number of pedals. I'll probably start out with daisy chaining but I see people say it introduces a lot of noise and weakens the signal

So I'm a broke 19y/o and I currently play an old squier strat my dad gave me years ago, and I just got a nearly $600 check in the mail for who knows what reason and my birthday is coming up. My parents have offered to help me with the cost of a $800-$1000 guitar for my birthday, and I'm currently considering either the epiphone ES-175(Wes Montgomery used an ES-175 at times and I like his music) or MIJ/CIJ jazzmaster(my gf really wants me to get the jazzmaster cuz Elvis Costello and J Mascis both used one and she's a big fan of both, I also really like Sonic Youth which is a contributing factor to me wanting one)

Which guitar should I get and why?
>>
>>73194699
Also I mostly like jazz, prog, and noise rock and will be going to school for music in the fall and taking some jazz-improv classes if that helps give more info as to what I should get.

>>73195447
I'm in the same situation but I did some research.
It's pretty much either the Ibanez SR506, the ESP-LTD D-6 or the ESP-LTD B-206.
Schecter has some models but for some reasons I can't find any Schecter bass here. But they're part of ESP in a way so the quality should be comparable.
I think I'll go for the SR506, I tried one in a shop and it was very comfortable (aside from having kind of a heavy neck, but that's an usual issue with extended range), my friend has an SR505 and it's also really good.
Or I'll just spend more and get a BTB.

>>73195614
>>73195917
Sounds like an overdriven amp with a really greasy bass tone underneath, it doesn't sound that saturated. Cut off some treble with the tone knob on your guitar too, it should help too.

>Sounds like an overdriven amp with a really greasy bass tone underneath, it doesn't sound that saturated. Cut off some treble with the tone knob on your guitar too, it should help too.

so it can be achieved without a fuzz pedal?

can you reach that tone only with the amp?
>>
>>73196169
Listening back, I don't think you can get the exact same tone without a fuzz.
You could get close by rolling down the tone knob and pushing your amp as much as possible to get more bass response but it's gonna lack that grindy kind of sound.

>>73196292

>>
>>73195917
Then the key to this sound will be to stack different layers of drive. Try running your guitar with the tone about 2/3 of the way up into the interface. Then do three tracks, one with a heavy overdrive, one with a heavy fuzz sound, and one with a light fuzz into a light overdrive. Pan left right and center and you should have a heavy ass guitar sound. Also play with the EQ a bit, try boosting the low-mids and cutting the high-mids and extreme lows.

>>
>>73199586

>>
>>73199606

>>
>>73199606
Not if youre talented. Plebs would have to study though. Thats who music school is for. Musical plebs.

>We found out this guy IRL is a faggot who wishes he was Sithu Aye dying alone in his bedroom
>>

>using tabs to learn qotsa

>>
>>73199633

>>
>>73199790
>playing patrician jazz from sheet music

literally not getting to the point to jazz music
>>
>>73199889
>Reading and playing jazz standards from sheet music
>Not developing an intrincate knowledge of harmony.
>Not using said knowledge to generate a self-developed harmonic framework.
>Not improvising long liquidy legato fusion lines a la Tom Quayle.
>Not using long, flowing sweep-tapped improvised lineslike Guthrie or Tony McAlpine
>>
>>73200002
>using theory as a crutch
>having to actually learn harmony, and not just know it by listening to music
>harmonic framework

>using your ears
>not knowing by heart not only all of music theory but also physics so you can actually predict in your mind what is the resulting sound of any physical interaction

every major player studied jazz

yeah, even him, who you think "he looks so badass, surely he never studied something as lame as jazz, my dad listens to jazz and i hate my dad!, surely he just learned to play by riding a bike and banging chicks" even he probably had to suck a jazz guitar players dick to learn some of that dere sweet sweet ultra harmony tips
>>
>>73200198
