They take a lot of shit for being a flagship band for a pretty derided movement, but the truth is they're actually very creative and construct songs well.

Even at their emo-est I don't feel any of their music is as cringey as even the best that other bands from this scene have to offer.

Pretty good band.

The first album is the best niggas.

Image is everything.
If you listened to Black Parade without any prior knowledge of My Chemical Romance, you didn't see them dressed in their faggy marching band get-ups, and you didn't see the minimalist black and white cover of the album, you would not call it an "emo" album. It was filled with energy for the most part with a few moody spots littered throughout.
The emo thing contributed largely to their success; I remember many a fat scene girl wearing MCR shirts underneath their Nightmare Before Christmas hoodies they bought for way too much money at Hot Topic, and while that painted them in a corner, I don't think they would have achieved the same level of success if it was the same music, but they all worse jeans and t shirts instead.
