Depends on your definition of greatness. Most influential? By far. Most technically skilled? Hardly.

So far the best guitarist I have heard is Jeff Loomis. He's technical, fast, and is playing is so so clean. Not trying to push my favorite artist or have an argument over better taste. Just putting that out there.

By today's standards James is nothing special but at the time he was innovative and interesting and that counts for a lot.
