There's a distinction between "popular for a short while" music and "prolonged popular" music. Prolonged popularity usually signifies some degree of talent and ability, whereas artists who get really big really quickly then drop off after a year or two often aren't, and those are who are often complained about.

PF only peeked into the top 10 singles in the UK twice and the US once. Led Zeppelin only did once. They just go on as the ones we remember and there was as much pleb crap on the radio in the 70s as there is today
