Professional upright bassist here. Buy the cheapest one you can find. An old kay or englehardt is fine. Then spend the money to get it set up really well by a good luthier and put good strings on it. I know guys that still use their first shitty bass the stole from their high school as a professional gigging bass to this day.

Dunno, man. When I was about 7 I got severely discouraged about learning music when one day the music teacher came to our class and asked us all to sing the c major scale. Of course, I was shit and she said I was a lost cause. Years later around 16 I picked up the guitar and didn't do really well till 2 years ago at 22 I worked my ass off and bought myself a cheap drum kit. Turns out, it happened to be just my instrument. I practice every day for hours with tons of dedication and love for the instrument. I'm even progressing better than drummers that go to college with a friend of mine.
My point is that, I guess for me, whenever I'm forced to do something I start hating it and begin to slack.
It's only when I take up something on my own that I have the will to do it.

i didnt say a new engelhardt, look on craiglist or some shit, be prepared to drive a few hours to pick it up. save up for it man, like a car. thats what i did. i gigged on electric to save up for it and interned with the luthier who did the work on it. but the cheapest bass i would play on a gig is a shen SB80. itll still be about 1500.
