Too many good records choose from.
But I think I'll have to go with To be kind, it brings back some of the anger from their early records with the new post-rock style.
Gira also sounds legit crazy on some tracks
AAAAAAAAHH!
probably children of god because of sex, god, sex
Holy Money, Soundtracks For The Blind, The Seer, and The Glowing Man are all 10/10
>>73170613
Filth, all the others are shit
ok maybe not but still Filth
>>73170613
Young God.
>>73172780
I fucking hate that they dropped a drummer and lost their groove
Why didn't they hold onto two bassists for that metallic detuned umph
Going through their discography waiting for another Filth was frustrating
Soundtracks and Greed
Fool is just insanely fucking good
>>73171780
where the fuck is holy money??!?!??!111!
>>73172838
He included the Greed / Holy Money release, which, by the way, has a different mix and song list that almost ruins the Holy Money parts of the album. The fact that he grouped the two together shows that he's a pleb, and that his opinions should be disregarded
fuck 'em
>>73170979
Holy Money, a decent choice.
>>73170613
HAHAHAHA SO I'LL BE THE ONE!
TO BE KIND!!
YALL HAPPY NOW?

To Be Kind is a great album though
I'm happy you like it :)

The Great Annihilator
After a year on /mu/ i got around to checking them out and am on the beginning of the discovery. Loved Soundtracks for the blind, The Seer, My father and To be Kind. Especially Bring The Sun is absolutely incredible.
SPACE CUUUUUUUUUUNT

>>73179772
It's confusing that someone can sit down and intently listen to both Greed and Holy Money and decide Holy Money is better. Greed is the climax of their no-Wave and Holy Money is the definition of B-side.
The Great Annihilator.
Public Castration. I don't know why; it just is.
>>73179834
The songs on Holy Money feel way more fleshed out and interesting.
Also Greed and Holy Money aren't in the no wave era.

>holy money over greed

Somebody please fucking tell me how to get into these guys
Listened to The Seer and TBK, and to me it's just well-made drone rock filled with some quasi-crescendos and nothing else
Please tell me SFTB or their earlier discography is better, or else I will become deeply disappointed in this board's obsession with them
>>73181609
Listen to filth.
>>73181609
SFTB is better and is the single most disturbing musical experience I have ever been through. The album feels like something really dark and terrifying is lurking beneath it. It's the Eraserhead of music.
>>73181785
I'm currently on the tail end of an all-nighter Adderall binge, would it be intense if I gave it a shot tonight?
>>73181609
listen to the seer and to be kind
>>73181609
Try White Light
>>73181609
The Great Annihilator, Children of God and White Light From The Mouth of Infinity are all accessible and pretty different from their past releases.
>>73180475
Greed isn't supposed to be fleshed out. It creates an atmosphere. And Filth, Cop, Greed, and Holy Money are generally all considered no-wave even if the scene was pretty much dead at that point.
>>73172517
This
Last week listened to it for the first time it's fucking amazing
Didn't even realised it was 34 minutes long

Well, Greed/Holy Money is the definitive version of both albums as well as the Time Is Money ep. It's the way that Gira himself preferred it. They're both two parts of the same album anyway. But I guess I'M the pleb for disagreeing with the artists' intent.
White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity

lmfao seriously kill yourselves and never listen to Swans again.

It's certainly arranged in the way that Gira preferred it to be in 1992, when it was constructed. It's obviously not the way that the Michael Gira who created the music preferred it, as these versions of songs had been recorded and rejected at the time of release. Nothing can be said regarding what he would choose at this time, because he does not now have time to recreate it and instead sells through his own website that which has already been made and is being printed and distributed by a different record company. Gira develops a firm distaste for any music he creates after having released it, so one can expect him to change things; but that's no reason to declare that his newer version, from which songs on the separate EPs are subtracted so as to fit everything into a single CD, is the definitive version, when the artist that did create and release the music in a finished state is long-gone. There's no reason to claim that you are more coincident with the intention of the artist, when we could not know what he now would choose to do, and can only know what he, at the time of release, wanted. The point is that there is not and cannot be a definitive version when circumstances dictate what the artist can do as well as how they perceive their own music. Michael Gira is not a consistent, unchanging living entity throughout time that can release a definitive version of his music. He can give his own opinion on the music and justify changes by revealing constraints, but beyond that these changes are based upon nothing more than the whim of his present self, which is subject to change.

>>73183863
Gira doesn't even like his own music; it's not quite reasonable to use his perspective as basis for critical thought on his work.
>>73184543
That's not quite true. In interviews he praises and defends much of his work -- even the earlier material. Gira is also quick to put forth his own interpretation of his music and the qualities therein when he encounters an opinion that he finds particularly disagreeable. He does claim to be unable to listen to it at this time, though, as I'm sure you are aware.
I'm not sure haha

SFTB or The Seer
>>73172827
Jonathan Kane was so fucking great. That swing. Such a great loss for their sound. But still, there were many other great musicians that followed or stayed that all brought something.
I'd have to say White Light From the Mouth of Infinity.
Cop is a close second, but for very different reasons.
