Youre probably using minor pentatonic. Try major pentatonic scale (just move your minor up three frets).

And use blue notes!

I'm thinking about learning Guitar but I'm left handed. My aunt is about to borrow me her guitar (Probably isn't a lefty one), and I'll start learning guitar that way until I buy a lefty guitar.

I heard that the chords are reversed, should I just hold it left handed anyways until I get my actual guitar?

>>
>>73158695
Acoustic or electric guitar? If it's electric you can just switch the strings around and play lefty. No reason to learn in a retarded way (even though some people like Elizabeth Cotten have done it.)

How much can you really fuck up a guitar by trying to set it up yourself? Assuming you don't fucking rape the truss rod and you adjust it the way you're supposed to.

I want to put a thicker gauge of strings on my SG but I've never set it up before and I don't want to fuck it up because I like it the way it is. I've adjusted other guitars but I've never messed with the bridge, just made small tweaks to the truss rod.
>>
>>73158884
Truss rod is the only thing you can really fuck up if you crank it too much. Next hardest job is fret leveling, but also pretty safe if you take your time. How much thicker of a gauge are you going?

yes, 100% sure, when i plug it in the leds work, when i use it in direct mode i can hear the sound going trough it. i even got it to work ok a COUPLE of times, but then after switching it to a different usb it stopped working forever. Even when i switched it back. I switched it because it has some ground loop issues but im sure thats not related and ill deal with that once i make windows detect it.

p much just build a clone to start off with, get a general idea. from there it's all up to your imagination. of course, you should have an understanding of electronics and whatnot, potentiometers, variable/fixed resistors, diodes, capacitors, pcb's, y'know, things that go into pedals. you don't necessarily need a degree in electrical engineering. it's not hard, it's high school tier math
>>
>>73159861
literally any amp. it comes down to personal preference. cheesy as it may sound, that's all it is.

personally, i like fenders for their clean sounds and i'll use my ocd pedal for some dirt
>>
>>73160515
>you don't necessarily need a degree in electrical engineering. it's not hard, it's high school tier math
Ehhhhhhh I'm not so sure about that. If you're going to make some digital pedal by just piping the guitar into a RasPi or an Arduino, do some signal processing and then output the whole shebang, you can get away with no in-depth knowledge. If you want to design your own analogue circuits you at least want to know how passive and active RC filters, diodes and the basic transistor circuits work and how to calculate them, how load affects your circuit and what impedance matching is; otherwise you risk having really REALLY shitty sound and possibly blowing up your circuit.
>>
>>73158695
Acoustic, but I really want to play a left handed guitar. I'll probaby buy one in like a month anyways.
>>
>>73160612
yeah like i said, high school tier math. i took some classes and i have worked and tweaked my own stuff just to try it out.

but i guess i should've mentioned analog pedals only, going into digital stuff is a bit more complicated
>>
>>73160678
>going into digital stuff is a bit more complicated
I disagree. For digital you can test all your shit on your home computer and all you need is a 2 hour Python or GNU Octave tutorial and an interpreter. Maybe some perfboard and an MCU when you want to try it out for real. For analogue you need components, tools, learn to solder and know some mathematical concepts that are beyond your standard "add, subtract, multiply, divide" which is difficult enough for your average "I hate school and I'll be a great rock musician!" kid. Don't get me wrong, for me this shit is easy because I liked maths and physics and got my bachelor's degree in EE but from experience even simple things like solving quadratic formulae is beyond the average graduate.
>>
>>73160746
>even simple things like solving quadratic formulae is beyond the average graduate

is it really?
i never liked math, but it was easy because there's a formula for everything. idk, man.
>>
>>73160811
Maybe I'm overthinking things, I don't know. He should definitely give it a try and see if he likes it, but it wouldn't hurt to have the background knowledge to figure out in advance what's going on, why or why not stuff is or isn't working and how to make it work without wasting 5 opamps before figuring out why they keep burning out.

Anons, I need some advice.

I was browsing GC's used section and came across a Fender Jazz 4 string. Had new strings, pickups all sounded good, the fretboard felt smooth like butter, and slapping/popping felt so great on it. White finish, dark wood fretboard, pickguard that had the same pattern as pic related, and a nice big headstock. It was also $400 and one of the Mexico made models. Do I go for it? The "mexican made" was the only thing holding me back.

>>
>>73163299

>>
>>73163299

>>
>>73163337
Some people actually prefer MiM to MiA. They have an overall different sound but it's not necessarily much worse
>>
>>73163337
>>73163353
Only thing I've read is that they're not as high as the American made ones. But that's understandable with the lower price. I want high quality but I don't need a super indestructible diamond-like construction. I might go for it. I know jazz basses usually go for higher no matter where they're made.
>>
>>73162622
i like the idea of these packs to get people started, but DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK
seriously, when it comes to acoustics you have to shill out at least $500 for something moderately decent. i remember going having to tune one of those fuckers and the whole neck just started bending. shit is not made to last. DO NOT BUY IT.

there's a lot of youtube videos in regards to the whole country of origin thing, in short from what i've seen and dealt with, the only difference between mim and mia, are the electronics, mia sounds a tad brighter. everyone else has put in some good advice about it too.
try it out. sometimes the only difference between mim and mia is just the country of origin. in the end, you either get a bass/guitar made in mexico by mexicans, or made in the us by mexicans

That's just not true. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for, but there's plenty of decent acoustic options for less than $500. I learned to play guitar on a $200 Ibanez acoustic, and while I've since upgraded to a much better Martin, that Ibanez was more than adequate for a beginner.

I'd recommend avoiding the starter pack and just getting a higher quality guitar in the $200 range. You're not going to need the gig bag and you can get the strings/picks/tuner for cheap enough on their own.

Beginners generally can't tell the difference between a mid level guitar and a high level guitar though. Telling someone to drop half a grand on a guitar when they've never even played one before is terrible advice. You're always better off starting on the cheaper end and upgrading later on when you're sure it's something you plan to stick with.

There might be something wrong with the usb port you're plugging it in on your computer. Have you tried it on different ports, cables or on different computers?
Maybe try deleting and re-installing all the drivers and software.

I had some issues with my Presonus audiobox when I plugged into a different usb port than the one it was originally plugged in. If I remember correctly deleting drivers and software fixed the issue.

My fucking G string keeps going out of tune before the rest, even when I don't bend it. The peg is also really inconsistent, in that I'll turn it and nothing happens, then suddenly a tiny movement will overshoot it.
Is there a fix for this? I've tightened the peg and changed strings but it still happens. Could it be something with the nut? The guitar is getting old so it might be just that too I guess.

The first two videos in his playlist give better angles, imo. When he slows down his picking looks more rotational from the wrist. You can see the thumb/forefinger hole facing the camera more at the end of a passage. So I think the thumb movement is partially pick adjustment but mostly an expression of a limited and controlled amount of rotation. In other words, the thumb is working together with the forearm. (I could be completely wrong.)

Frome time to time he moves his wrist up and down in a hinged manner, as well.

Anons, give it to me straight. I have only been playing guitar for a week, I am persevering and enjoying it a lot but my progress is probably typical of most adult learners (i.e. quite slow). I am playing on an old hand me down classical guitar with a view to switching to acoustic soon as I want to play mainly for singing along.

Would I be absolutely fucking mad to buy a Martin acoustic guitar at this stage? The bulk of my favourite singers invariably use Martins or Gibsons by the looks of things, and I now have become fixated on owning a Martin. The 000RS-1 and DRS-1 in particular appeal to me and are both just shy of £800.

Has anyone here spent this kind of money on their first guitar? Did the cost plus improved sound encourage you to practice more or did you come to regret it? Would I be mental to make such an investment as a beginner? I just don't see the point in buying a shitty acoustic just now only to replace it later.
>>
>>73175490
My first guitar was a squier electric. 129 USD.
It was that because I was kid but as an adult, if you
feel like you're really gonna play guitar and it'll be
one of your hobbies/passions then go for it.
Because as you know guitars devalue unless they're
in their 50's or 60's. Buy it, they feel great and do what
you want with it.
>>
>>73175490
Whether or not you want to spend that much money is really up to what you can afford, but if you're sure you're going to stick with the guitar, it's not a terrible choice. Although, a Martin isn't really a good choice for that budget, since you'll be getting their absolute bottom of the line and will mostly be paying for the name. There are plenty of manufacturers (Blueridge, Epiphone, Yamaha, etc.) that make much, much better guitars (including things are basically just copies of Martins) than those Martins for around the same amount.

>>73175958
The necks are made out of mystery wood (they don't say what it is, just "select hardwood"), and the fingerboards are richlite, which is made out of paper. So you're not getting a guitar made out of all sold and non-mystery woods like you would from other manufacturers in the same price range.

Plus, they're made from sapele, which isn't a great choice for a first guitar. It's a wood that's a lot like mahogany, and while they can sound very, very good (my main guitar is made completely out of khaya, another mahogany substitute), it's a very specific sound that many people don't like.
>>
>>73176623
Ok, cheers for the advice, disappointing but you've potentially just stopped me making a big mistake!

Do you only tend to see the benefits in Martins at the £1000+ range, no expense spared in the material choices and workmanship? Maybe I would be better plumping for a £300ish Yamaha or somesuch at the moment.

Those $600 - $1000 Martins are all-round good guitars, but like this anon >>73175634 said, at that price range you're mostly paying for the name, and there are other guitar manufacturers out there who'll put a lot more of that money into the actual guitar. If you're going to buy around that budget, I'd suggest getting a Taylor instead. Actual mahogany and ebony instead of mystery wood, and they sound and play a little better. But, you want a Martin, presumably not only because they're quality guitars but also because it's a Martin, and that's just very cool. And I don't blame you. But at 800 quid you'll just be buying an 800 pound copy of the real thing. They're made in Mexico, not in the US.

Do yourself a favour, get a used Seagull s6 for 300, then buy a real, American-made Martin in a year or so. Save yourself the buyer's remorse. Also you'll have something to look forward to while practicing ("when I get the other guitar it'll sound a lot better).

Also, prepare for sore fingers.

I had a look and it appears most Martin guitars use "select hardwood" necks, even some of the cripplingly expensive D18s and D28s. Is this much to worry about? I heard that Martins are extremely consistent in quality whereas with Gibson guitars it is more of a gamble apparently.

Which Martin models are worthwhile and are the 15 series onwards all American made?

I have a Martin Custom X series (pic related) and I absolutely love it. Not sure what the neck is made out of but it's really smooth and comfortable. For being on the cheaper end of Martin guitars, it plays and sounds great. I can't see myself ever buying another acoustic unless something bad happens to this one.

I need a small light amp with decent volume, headphone option and great clean tone for uni (jazz guitar major)
I was considering a Cube, a Lunchbox, a Boss Katana 50 and a DV Mark jazz amp, what would you recommend?
>>
>>73184688
every amp you said would work.

there is a jc-20 iirc and blackstar does a decent sounding small 2 speaker amp too
>>
>>73184327
That's a gorgeous guitar, glad to know that the lower end Martin guitars are decent as the thought of spending two grand on a guitar makes me want to shit myself.

I just dropped 1400. I didnt even wince. You will get there anon. Guitar is an expensive curse.

Should i get his signature jazzmaster? Do you know if its any good? I will either get that or a g&l tribute bluesboy.

I've been playing guitar for about 10 years. I like to think I'm pretty okay; but I'm really bad with my right hand. My natural instinct was to always just pick with my thumb, and nobody stopped me, so my technique with my fingers is pretty atrocious, and so is my technique with a pick somehow. I'm actually bad at using a pick.

Is there any resource anyone could point me towards that could help me with finger picking technique, or even just regular picking technique? Especially placement of the palm and fingers. None of the links were any use to me. Thanks.

Also interested in a small amp. Living space doesn't allow my desired set up. Any good ones under $70 for bass? Or are any of the ones you just listed gonna work fine?

I'd assume custom molded earplugs are the best, but that shit costs a lot. These type of stacked conical ones are pretty good for cheap

is it a baritone fender??

get larger bridge pins. Buzzing sounds like a low cut nut slot, you can fix it with super glue and bone dust

What compressor do you peeps recommend? I'm looking for something as flexible as possible because I play anything from ambient stuff soaked in delay and reverb to tight, spanky funk tones. The Seymour Duncan Vise Grip looks like what I'm looking for but what other pedals should I look at?

this is relevant to my interests. I just bought an maudio mtrack 2x2m board. what plugins you recommend? im into stoner rock and hard rock blues mostly

im sorry, poor fag here, i cannot possibly affoard a billion different pedals, i just bought an audio interface, a midi pedal board, some good headsets and hope that does it.

If theres really good modelling, is there a chance that it sounds similar to the original?

so with an m audio i cant get it to sound even decent?

also what are good plugins? guitar rig? positive grid?
>>

bruh i dont know, but paying 3 grand for axefx is insanity.
>>
>>73191872
Why do you think I'm asking for suggestions on what pedals to buy, you mongoloid?

>>73191937
Good modeling exists but it's going to cost several grands, like the Axe Fx. I use a Digitech GSP1101 but when you're using PC based modeling then you're better off with getting a good amp sim and good cabinet impulse responses. Stuff like Guitar Rig and Positive Grid is good if you just want to mess around with a lot of different sounds but the sound isn't that good.

I don't really know much about stoner rock but I'd assume you'd be good to go with some Orange or Marshall amp sim. Get this http://www.redwirez.com/free1960g12m25s.jsp and this http://www.rosendigitalaudio.com/pulse/ for your cabinet and just Google for some free amp sims and try them out.
