What do you think of straight edge and the musical movement it spawned?
dorks dweebs nerds
Poseurs.
some decent hardcore bands came out of it, so there's that. teetotal myself so can identify a little bit with it, but wouldn't ever class myself as straight edge or whatever, fair play to anyone that does and genuinely sticks with it.
seemed to lose its momentum when they had a whole bunch of splinter types coming in with new ideologies (the no meat brigade and the hare krishna consciousness group). nowadays I think cm punk has done more for straight edge than most groups or bands since the 90s.
Edgy and pointless trite. I guess it's better to not take bad substances and be healthy than to go the wrong path and do it all wrong but it has a very condescending and (ass)holier than thou attitude to it. I was a stuck up little straight edge shitlord in high school when I would go mad at people for even suggesting I'd shut up and take one sip out of a beer can. Now I occasionally microdose psychedelics for minor brain stimulation, I love coffee and moderately drink spirits or smoke tobacco every now and then. I'm more modest than spiteful now and overall happier.
As for the music I guess Minor Threat is okay idk
Faggots who whine about people smoking cigs and drinking at shows.
Who the fuck wants to see a punk band sober.

shit music is pretty bad sober just dose up before you have to endure

Not everyone that says they're straight edge complains about what others do.
I completely support it. Abstaining from drugs is always a good thing. The music is pretty cool as well.

I support the notion of abstaining from alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, but I don't support the notion of beating and hurting people that do indulge in those things.
That's probably the biggest reason I could never call myself 'straight edge'. The people that hurt other people instead of doing it for themselves as a positive thing ruin the name.

Oh yeah, I agree. Those who use the movement as an excuse to be violent are stupid.

to be fair, most "straight edge" people don't actually beat people up for drinking
I feel the same way about it I feel about veganism: I've actually never met an asshole vegan, and though I eat meat myself, I think it's cool that people are staying true to their convictions. I like that.
I don't care much for hardcore punk, though.
i think the specific sound that straight edge and youth crew bands like turning point or youth of today ended up having sounds really interesting but i dont know where to specifically go looking for it, as to the actual philosophy, its alright, i know some straight edge kids and some are obnoxious while others keep it to themselves, if i had to pick between it existing or not im glad it does
