In fact he's a pretty meh composer but the classical period was so short, and he had an interesting life so that may be why literally everyone know about him

Because that's one of the only composers the general public has heard of.

He has enough easy tunes that can be excerpted and sold to the masses as "improving" while never distancing itself from the banal to such a degree that it might cause confusion or offence. His life has (popularised fictional) drama such that he can be related to in the same way as one might relate to Beethoven.

It's a shame because his best works (such as his "Haydn Quartets") show why he is so deserving of his place among the greatest masters, but the fact that he spent his working life as a grinder-out of pretty tunes for the amusement of a plebby aristocracy means that he will be forever known primarily as a composer in the line of Rachmaninoff.
