my jaw is on the fucking floor currently. in other words, The Beatles made their music too interesting and "respectable" which "repelled the female gaze". The logical conclusion of her proposition is that women can't enjoy or comprehend respectable art.

>One of the reasons I’m such a fan of early American punk bands like the Ramones and Blondie is that they explicitly tried to recapture the girlishness of 1960s rock and pop before the self-importance of albums like “Sgt. Pepper’s” took over. Joey Ramone in particular worshipped the girl groups of the ’60s, like the Ronettes, who used to share billings with the Beatles. But even punk eventually succumbed to that same logic that manliness equals credibility and requires “hard” or “difficult” pop music, and drifted away from the early ’60s-style sunniness of the Ramones to the brutish sounds of hardcore.

>>73126661
Is that from the article? I think she needs a history lesson or two.

>It was the transition album that turned rock from a debased music for ponytailed fans twisting the night away to music for grown men whose tastes are far too refined to worry about whether a pop song has a beat you can dance to.
Is she writing on behalf of today's listeners, or those in the 60s? I bet you the male fans with "refined" tastes who know the beatles catalog are more likely to know the Ronettes than the average fan. If the famous albums from the 60s don't initially capture your interest, you're unlikely to delve into the obscure ones.

If she's saying current female pop stars and their fans are held back by contemporaneous art rock albums, then I don't know where to begin.

But why would Sgt Pepper even be considered the transition to seriousness? Revolver and Rubber Soul weren't unserious albums, full of songs to dance to. Why not point at an album like Highway 61? Everything that can be said about Sgt Pepper can be said about that. A song like Desolation Row was already a long way from the teenybop world, and Dylan was far from unknown.

There's also the fact that a song like "Sugar Sugar" (which does call back to the early 60s vibes) was still topping the charts in 1969. That world still existed in parallel to everything else that was going on.

>>73127435
You'd be surprised. There are plenty of people who think about bands like the Beatles the same way you might think of One Direction or other rubbish that kids listen to.

Of course she's right. We all know the Beatles kept hordes of women in cages and repeatedly fed them only the bowels of half drowned and stil live bloated sheep. They were forced to wear name tags but regardless of their names they were all call 'Lassie'. I heard that the Beatles would make them stand for hours on end and that their skin would rot from the inability to sit down like battery hens that they would siphon their spirit away from for their true lord Quebzcotakla Gwenvirudinom who would in turn reward them with music. 100% pure satan = The Beatles.

From the original salon article:

>Look at disco, for instance. Disco is classic girl music — or, more accurately, music for girls and gay men.

Totally false, disco was first and foremost a men genre for men, all the producers behind it were men, women were only "used" for the vocals and the music was targeted to black and gay people, both men and women.
She's even slightly homophobic, oh the irony, implying gay men are girls in disguise.
>>
>Sgt. Pepper” is a good pop record, don’t get me wring. But it’s a record I resent, because it helped cement this notion that music for girls is silly and music for men is artistically significant. It’s a notion that is doubly appalling because history shows, time and time again, that girl-tastes are the ones that are ahead of the curve.

She is an idiot, she doesn't know that female musicians can do artistically significant music (Bjork, Kate Bush, Fiona Apple, etc.)

yes, and I've been aware of Amanda Marcotte since she got into that tiff with Slate Star Codex over whether nerds with social anxiety face any sort of real social disadvantage

her take: "no."

http://slatestarcodex.com/2015/01/01/untitled/

--anyway, point is Daily Caller is a hyper-partisan muckraking non-news site that devotes itself to covering left-leaning notorious controversy queen non-journalists like Amanda Marcotte.

In fairness to her, I think she had a good premise: there's a hierarchy in music, and it's often based on who your fans are. Teenage girls are at the very bottom of the hierarchy, which is a shame because teenage girls actually have a pretty good track record of discovering artists.

She's a fundamentally bitter person, though, when she's writing about feminist topics (and she often writes about feminist topics) and can't help but try to land as many acerbic digs against men as she can. She always does this shit: starts off with a fine premise for a hot take and then goes overboard just pushing it as far as she can and wording everything as insultingly as possible.

And then, of course, Daily Caller, The Blaze, Breitbart, et. al. can be relied upon to pounce on it and say "LOOK AT THIS. LOOK AT WHAT LEFTISTS BELIEVE. ONLY TRUMP CAN SAVE YOU FROM THIS."

It's like a shitty self-sustaining terrarium of second-tier hyperbolic journalism. The crazy extremists from both sides acting as political representatives for clicks.

See this is the legitimate sexist thing that deserves to be called out hiding behind Amanda Marcotte's shitty article. She's right that a lot of dudes think this way, and it sucks. She just took it to a ridiculous and shitty extreme that shit on the Beatles for no apparent reason.

There's a child like innocence to their approach.
It's honest and genuine. That's the basic charm.
(Or that's what makes it "Fab" if you will)

The problem isn't her writing the article, it's that the people she works for took it seriously.

There are plenty of loons in the world, but now we have a dumb media that allows loons to write "thinkpieces" on stuff that is a completely nonsensical social justice interpretation of trivialities.

Of course 4chan will act as if there aren't right wing loons propped up by Fox News either, but they would rather cherry pick dummies propped up by clickbait sites instead of attack the real issue which is a lack of ethics and objectivity in journalism.

I'd swop bitter for revisionist. Also from what I read (which seems to still be going through editorial after publication) the greater potential debate on (apologies before hand) the roles of gender in music was lost on Amanda.
