My brother made this guitar in grad school several years ago and I get to babysit it for the next year or so while he's out of the country. The action definitely needs to be lowered, but otherwise it plays pretty nicely and has a good clean tone. It's just heavy as fuck.
>>
>>73117536
I posted this in the last thread. You either get a really hot stacked P90 and split it, or you get a really hot true single coil P90 and you tap it, since that's all you can do with a single coil.

Other than that, I don't know, take two individual 3-string wide half-P90s and wire them up like a P-Bass split coil? That's just mad scientist shit.
>>

>>73117619
I'm being quite serious. I use my Boss ME-50 every day with great results. I always run a little bit of compression and noise reduction. I've got reverb that sounds better than my amp's spring reverb. Delay is delay. No problems there. I like the "enhance" setting on the Tone Modify section for more clarity, especially on bass (yup, I use it for bass, too. No ME-50B needed). The dirt section has some useful settings. "Screamer", for example, is a great clean boost, just like the Tube Screamer.

If I had a mic, I'd post clips. Maybe my Rockband mic will work

I think they design some pretty cool fretless guitars but honestly I'm not all that crazy about fretless electric guitars in general. Fretless basses, on the other hand...

But yeah, I love Vigier's designs and it would be great to own one someday. That being said, I really like Strats in general and if the Vigier thing doesn't work out a decent set of single coils for my Fender would be just as good.

Would it be better for me to learn major scales and chords before trying to noodle around songs I like?

Also I'd like to learn the rhythm section for certain songs I dig but how does one know the chord the guitarist is playing without using shit ultimate-guitar tabs? Is that just a matter of learning enough chords to build a solid mental library? I want to learn without tabs if I can

https://clyp.it/h5ic2vcm
>>
>>73119479
i don't have anything against gearposting really, people used to take nice pictures of their gear and show it off and that was cool.

but it's something about creating your little gear character and even drawing a little avatar of yourself that really rustles my jimmies, what the fuck is this little game?
>>
>>73119497
Personally I use it more as a boost than as my main sound, but it does a decent job of getting the tone right. Through the Mig 50 it honestly sounds more like a Beta Lead than a Model T, I could play Red Fang riffs and sound dead on.
>>
>>73119434
I dunno mang, i did mine to sort of figure out just what would my dream gear be and maybe get some recs from other anons. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Original p90's are humbucker sized single coils. You can't split them but if you want to tap them it's possible but pointless. P90's are supposed to sound t h i c c.

I use my phone because I'm cheap and lazy. My old iPhone actually had a decent mic. I could record guitar, drums, and bass without too much clipping. Used to use a Rockband mic with an old laptop, but the laptop broke. Ideally it would be a Blue Snowball. I don't know much about microphones or recording, though.

Anyway, if anyone ever says "That sounds like shit!" and you wondered what "shit" sounded like, this is it.

I can understand that, I would say they're my favorite jazz group at the moment but there are solo artists that play with large ensembles that I enjoy a lot more (they just aren't "bands" so I didn't feel like it fit the category). I loved Kamasi Washington's "The Epic", the whole album has such a free spirit to it. I also really like BADBADNOTGOOD (who I should have mentioned) and Miles Mosley. I was just trying to give a general rundown of the kinds of bands I like that were also representative of the kind of music I like to play and write.

My thumb really hurts because it's all I use for picking. Picking with a pick is hard for me. Would a thumb pick be good for me since I use my thumb a lot and it won't hurt my actual thumb.

Drums are objectively the best the best instrument to play in a band setting. Hand, linear, kit, a good drum beat will trump all else when it comes comes to vibing. I'd rather drum with 4 drummers than play guitar in a full band. Guitarists want to make themselves sound good and then the band as a whole, percussionists want everything to sound good and cohesive. Guitarists are more concerned with impressing the audience than filling their pocket, and the conservative ones have no idea when to break that pocket and put a song over the edge.

I kind of rambled. But a good percussion groove is more pleasant to listen to than guitarists being themselves.

it's a 1932 epiphone triumph masterbilt. my dad gave it to me. it's super rare and i've only seen a couple for sale on obscure websites for ~$4000, so probably within your definition of a bomb. it does have a big midrange sound, not "dead", and DEFINITELY sounds nothing like any flat-top guitar. also, it's one of the best guitars i've ever played. perfect action, frets, neck is not thick at all. 10/10 instrument and my favorite guitar.

kinda unrelated but i love when people use drum vsts and say you that you can't tell the difference between the computer and a real drummer, just proves that a lot of musicians don't feel or understand what drums are actually doing. all the great drunmers i've had the priveledge to play with adapt to the other musicians. if someone is consistently off time the drummer leeches on to it to lock their accents with the offtime parts. so many people think that slightly time shifting parts with midi drums to make the drum machine seem slightly off time to make it human are so ignorant's funny.

Where do I even fucking start? I need to set the action AND the intonation. My guitar plays like shit because I've never set up the stupid bridge. I never even use the bar. Not worth dealing with the detuning during bends.

The 5 springs are tight enough that the bridge doesn't move. Regardless, it still needs to be intonated. I can't do jack shit until I get a fret job. I have high action because I fret out BADLY on bends past the 12th fret. The low strings are really low and poppy past the 12th fret, too.

Should I just go to a luthier at this point? I don't know any. How do I find a good one?

Is there a way to get rid of horrible background hissing? I'm pretty new, but I feel like I shouldn't be getting so much background noise from playing. I used to think it was some sort of interference from playing near my computer, but even with the guitar just plugged into the amp, the amp on, and my guitar's volume knob set to 0, there's still a horrible static that only scales with the master volume on my amp. The static is affected by thing like on-board effects too. It's a shitty $100 amp with an American Strat and stock cables for everything, all only a few months old. Suggestions?

I feel like my fingers are too fat for this neck. I can sorta hold the strings down but I can barely do chords. And sliding from chord to chord is next to impossible. Is it just my brain not "mapping" the fingers to the frets or is there something else? That's the main reason I've been focusing on bass, otherwise I'd be doing both.

The background hissing you hear is because of poor shielding. The pickups will have to be taken out and you have to line the indent where they lay with copper tape. I think.

I just play riffs, start adding fills, then let the fills turn into an improv solo. Whenever I get lost, I just start fishing around the fretboard until I find a new riff.

That seems nice

Any other effect ideas for slide guitars? I am a bit overwhelmed with the amount of pedals out there

No that's just my bedroom setup. I have a Laney Ironheart and use all the channels on that and the reverb then cut down to 2 or 3 Boss pedals on my board. Boss pedals are cheap and good.
>>
>>73131345
Nah I had a phase 90 and its only good for that warm analog tone. I bought the boss phaser used for 50 bucks and it does so much more than the MXR.

You're just who I'm looking for. I use a yamaha thr10x high gain amp and play a fuck ton of sabbath and sleep. I can't get that master of relite tone no matter what I do. Am I better off trebel boosting my amp distortion or should I get something like the sabra cadabra pedal that's a distortion with a built in treble boost. Help me master!

Nice dude, been wanting to try the PG flanger. Mike Einziger is one of my favorite guitarists too
>>
>>73131790
The flanger sounds pretty rad but it already broke twice in the past 5 years (2 of which it just sat around broken) despite only ever using it in my bedroom and occasionally a band practice room, always with the OEM power supply and never after a boost pedal.
>>
>>73131766

>>
>>73131747
Never said it was better did i? Just like your mom always just running her slutmouth. Are you mad i dont need an array of pedals to cover shitty playing?
>>
I practice for hours and hours at home, make super fast scale runs, play modes with total ease, feel like a true virtuoso... and then I get invited to play in a R&B band and I have no fucking idea what to do.

We don't play anything complex at all, your regular chords and song structures. But it's like all I do at home serves for nothing, suddenly I feel clueless and my fingers don't respond. Does this happen to anyone else too?

I think I'm good and I'm prepared to play in a band, but I'm ashamed that when the time comes, it's like my skills degenerate all of a sudden.
>>
>>73131824
post your playing so we can laugh at your cunt ego
>>
>>73131832
Less is more with that type of music. I was learning Nuno Bettencourt when I joined a cover band that covers 90s alternative, so I feel ya.
>>
>>73131823
Build a clone, there are kits with pre-drilled enclosures for like 30 € and it's not that difficult to solder together.
>>
>>73131832
Gotta have a feel for when to play the right note . what i like to do when i practice is turn on the fm radio start from one end and go station by station trying to solo to whatever is on. A song a station or more if im digging it. This will help you be versatile and to dominate different phrasings and colorings

I think the output opamp fucked itself, at least that was the diagnosis the first time it broke. It was still under warranty then, luckily. I like fucking around with the innards of my pedals, except for that one.

Yeah no.
>>
>>73131892
Yup. I dont need numale bullshit. A thomas organ crybaby and a mxr distortion plus and a dynacomp. Dynacomp is less dadrock tho and more just gold in a red box. It was actually popularized by country players. I dont really use the distortion at all. And the wah i use once in a while.

I think I've gotten used to play complicated exercises, and now when I'm required to just add a few licks to a song, or maybe a few modest arrangements, I feel this insecurity that makes me wonder if what I'm doing it's enough.

Like, the other day I merely played a pentatonic lick consisting of eight notes and two chord inversions during the chorus, and the band leader said that was spot on. But I get insecure, "was that really enough? sure it sounded okay, but shouldn't I do something more complex?"

It's funny I guess. So much practice makes me hesitant when playing more basic music.

>>73132374
nice licks man, playing leads on a steel string acoustic is definitely a lot more difficult with no gain to hide in. keeps ya honest.
>>
>>73130820
Try looking at octave and pitch shift pedals

I think tremolo pedals would sound interesting for slide too
>>
>>73132468
Octave fuzz sounds cool. Tremolo is one of those niche effects that I only use a hand full of times in a set but its definitely unique. Wouldn't say its mandatory for a board tho.
>>
>>73130820
EHX freeze could be interesting if you use it well

been practicing scales and spiders to a metronome/backing track/songs, and noodling around with weird fingerings, on a high action nylon acoustic daily for a couple months or so

my left hand's strenght and precision improved. also fingering, as i got gud at pressing the strings with the fingertips and 90º to the fretboard

also developed fingers independency and stretched them, can now play 1-3-5 on all strings easily, power chords with the index and middle finger even on the 1st fret, the B chord shape is no effort, just as any chord i want to do

can do all that with just pullofs and hammerons as i practiced the scales with these techniques

now i finally feel like i own the guitar on my hands

my fretboard visualization is great at this point, can spot any note, interval or scale all over it
i didnt really memorize scale shapes from diagrams n charts on the internet, i went searching the intervals myself. though i ended up relying around chord shapes and making my boxes around them
i'm surfing around the fretboard like a piano player, playing my old blues licks on different strings and chords and intervals during improvising

right hand: paid attention to picking while doing these, also doing some patterns focused on the picking. finally getting decent at alternate picking, also practiced n learned fingerpicking and thumbpicking

is this how everybody who practices as theyre supposed to, right as they start playing, feels?

tfw wasted 5 years playing tired blues licks and learning shitty songs
>>
>>73132497
having fun is the most important part to me, but challenging yourself and gaining new skills is great. sounds like you could get into tremolo picking, tapping and sweeps now.
