OC on the left, friend :)

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>pile - a hairshirt of purpose
the dude sounds like an angrier chris martin, which has its ups and downs. most of these songs are contingent upon dynamic shifts and good guitar work, and the vocalist sometimes distracts from genuinely interesting instrumental passages. the guitar tones are quite nice throughout as are the guitar's parts in general, varying between the angularness typical of post-hardcore and almost post-rock twinkle. despite this, the songwriting is lacking a real novelty and strays into generic territory quite often. solid album overall.

Understandable. I just think it's really great for a bandcamp pop record: the samples, the constant layered vocals, how comfy it is even when it's got painful lyrics:

>And I remember her bent over
>And knowing that it was the last time
>You know the end is near
>If she only lets you fuck at night
>And when she finally came even >though she faked it
>It was much appreciated
>At least she had the decency
>To try to make a sound she thought I'd like

>album with dogue
an interesting, pleasant listen. the production makes this hypercomfy, and the vocals perfectly compliment it. the field recordings are suprisingly engaging. good little project.
>emamouse - plant spiral bio bombing
i'd call this release distinctly "not my thing," with enough fun and engaging moments to be unable to be called "not good." not personally a fan of the vocals but the weird electronic instrumentals are compelling.

Jimbo - Peel Session
>Chamber Pop

This release is short and sweet; the quick, clearer take of Halfway to a Threeway feels a bit more sinister than the original and Little Island Walking is a neat primitivism track (you can hear this on the Japanese version of Eureka, by the way). The real gem here, however, is the eleven minute version of Women of the World; the extra three minutes of length really give a chance for the track to bask in its own comfiness. I think the Fast Car bootleg is the superior one from this era, but this was great.

4/5

zorboi
Träd, Gräs och Stenar - Gärdet 12.6.1970
>Psychedelic Rock, Jam Band

This is not quite up to the level of International Harvester or Parson Sound, but it is better than Harvester and the studio work released under this name. The 15 minute jam tracks are by far the best offerings here; the smaller tracks and covers aren't nearly as engaging. The sound quality is really bad, but in a way, it does add to the character a bit. Not really an essential listen unless you're super into the Swedish prog scene, but it's better than most of the stuff from it that came after 1968.

3.5

Gimme a meme image and a rec, Tuco

This round's restriction is that it must be cheesy pop music - City Pop, corny old soul, the like

It has to be a cheesy pop album for the tourney. I'll check that out anyway though, it looks neat.

I didn't mean it as a negative thing just an observation

As for the rating going down slightly, I just didn't think it held up as much as the first few listens, especially compared to the other 4s on that chart. Still good tho.

From his bandcamp:
"The Caretaker conjures a quieter, more introspective spirit, lost in his own mind amidst a low-lit labyrinth of ever-decaying and antediluvian shellac phrases. Sourced from a mysterious collection of 78s, these vague snippets of archaic sonics reflect the ability of Alzheimers patients to recall the songs of their past, and with them recollections of places, people, moods and sensations."

There's also some more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Empty_Bliss_Beyond_This_World
>>
>>73103167
Yup, I'll be relistening to it for sure.

>>73103189
I'm actually a cs major, but I had to take a writing class. I enjoy writing a lot though which is partly why I'm here.
>>
>>73103162
Yeah, it's really frightening but it's also really interesting in a kind of morbid way, because it shows how weirdly the human brain works.
My grandfather is suffering from alzheimers right now, and he can still play bridge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contract_bridge), which is pretty complicated, but he barely remembers anyone

An Empty Bliss is kind of extra personal to me because of it, he used to be a huge fan of dixieland jazz (and even played in a band in the 50s!) so an album about dixieland and alzheimers is basically an album about him. I have gotten almost all of his 78s too

The Caretaker album? No, he's way too confused for that. I have played some of his old dixieland stuff for him and some Beatles. I also played him my old copy of the soundtrack for A Clockwork Orange which I got from him.

It's really cool, you can really see his eyes light up when he hears a melody he recognizes, but you can also sense the frustration because he can't really put it into place. I even played a Swedish song twice, and both of the times he said "wow this one is good!" like if it was the first time he heard it, even though he had it in his vinyl collection.

I have played The Caretaker for my mother though (she's been more or less the person in the family taking care of him the most) and it was really heavy for her when I explained the inspiration behind it. She hasn't listened to the whole thing, I don't think she has listened to a whole album since the 80s, but it was really emotional to her just hearing that.

Overall it's not that big of a shock, he has been kinda distant for years now due to spiralling down in depression and alcoholism. Before, we just thought he drank for "no reason" or just because of addiction, but now when he has bee diagnosed we think that his alcoholism was probably a way to cope with his creeping alzheimers before he knew what it was, which really only made it worse. Now he lives in an elderly home at least and the people there are the nicest ever, really good place

>ramleh - hole in the heart
noise that's not too harsh, but really nuanced, and sometimes beautiful. the vocalizations really add to the desolate atmosphere. some of the tracks are sluggish in their progression, but the highs are remarkable expressions of a vague human privation, whether of love or hope or any other positive feeling. intriguing.
>this heat - this heat
i think i like this more than deceit. i much prefer the soundscapey, tape-music grooves found here over the cheesy vocal harmonies found throughout deceit. the tracks with vocals here use them in a much more nuanced and textural way, something that i really enjoy. also, "horizontal hold" is fucking wicked.
>>73104430
yes got it no scribble for me i am a neat and tidy boy
>>
>>73104362
actually, i wanna write about just a few
>Birchville Cat Motel - Beautiful Speck Triumph
Starting this off, I thought to myself "oh boy, this is just gonna be another long drone album that I end up not getting by the end of, like Ayahuasca", but this clicked hard for me by track three. Really, if this album were just track three and the title track, it would be tippy-top tier ambient drone, but it wouldn't be anywhere near the same experience as it is with every other track. This is an obvious beast of a drone album, and most of the tracks are very slow, noisy drones that are admittedly tough to listen to. But, getting to those good tracks makes the listen extremely rewarding and very worth it. I hesitantly recommend it.
Also, maybe I'm going crazy, but I'm 90% sure this album samples the first song from Eskimo
3.5-
>Mainliner - Mellow Out
the only thing i wanna say about this i wrote on my "albums that fucking rock" list:
>ALRIGHT THIS IS LITERALLY JUST FUCKING LRD AT TWICE THE SPEED AND WITH EVEN MORE KILLER FUCKING SOLOS
4.0-
>Disco Inferno - D.I. Go Pop
I loved this. I was admittedly a little weary with the post-rock tag on this, but this is not the traditional post rock. It keeps its energy up all the way through, and it's just a ton of fun to listen to. The plunderphonic influence makes for a listen that kept me interested all the way through to the end, and the psychedelic influence made it very appealing sonically. It's actually a very anxious/melancholy album, but it didn't feel like it at all to me. I could see this growing on me very hard super quick.
STRONG 3.5+

>Alesscandro Cortini - Sonno
>Dark Ambient

Before the monolithic Risveglio, Cortini seems to have been content with simpler warm pulses, while maintaining his tense and extraterrestrial atmosphere. He relies much more on patterns of pitches, making this sound almost like a flavorless Boards of Canada album at times. He hasn't seemed to have figured out how to make the pseudo-drums yet, and focuses on easy-to-digest echoing loops. It even sounds playful and curious, shortly after the opening tracks.

It's a simpler type of ambient album, that stands on the edge of blowing out your speakers with its bass. I still prefer Risveglio for its variation, and distinct ecosystem to its songs.

6/10

>Batfinks - Stema Tarnyt
>Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten
>Doom Metal

The mixing on this is odd, in comparison to the last doom metal I heard. It's much heavier and, uh, suffocating, on the ears, even as the bass player seems to be nowhere on this album. The drums aren't awful sounding, and cloaking the vocals a bit more in the mixing gives them the push in the right direction in being (almost) menacing, instead of piggish and silly.

And the guitar solos on the first track? Very enjoyable. In fact, this whole album's guitar work is most I've enjoyed in a metal album so far. Made me crank up the volume on my player, which I believe was the correct course of action for listening.

Still can't hear a single lyric in this album. Still don't like the bit of cheese that comes from the style of singing. Still can't shake how one-note this album is, but then again, if I can enjoy the aesthetic of something like "Brood Ma - Daze" for about 25 minutes, I probably shouldn't diss this 40 minute album either.

For a 1991 metal album that potentially kickstarted a subgenre, this isn't the worse thing.

>Batfinks - Stema Tarnyt
>Glitch, Chiptune,

It's the soundtrack for a child's life, not depicted in a movie. It's messy and active, it's got nasty sounds you would rather ignore, and it seems to take everything from its surroundings all at once. It reminds me of Your Infamous Harp - Prah Suomafni Ruoy, but instead of rapidly switching between emotions, this album embraces it all at once. Somehow, it's TOO colorful.

The amounts of sounds it uses over the course of playtime is kind of crazy, and the most normal sounding thing is Wareing's voice. Two Wien is the first to actually feel like an organized song, with a "Don't Hug Me I'm Scared" vibe: "And in the fourtieth century you're gonna be there... but in the 100th century, you're not going to care..."

When it calms down a bit, like in Ort to Gop or Mrs. Butel's Inn, there are small moments of tenderness that really stand out. Too bad the rest of the album doesn't really do much after the initial shock that comes from hearing the beginning. I think another issue with this album is its restlesness. The wandering samples that come in and out, drop a catchy harmony or melody, and then exit right after are a novelty at first, but later a detriment in songs that don't have vocals to give them focus. As a composition, this album is a wall splattered with Thanksgiving leftovers.

But yet, coming back to this album after a few days, I'm charmed.

What a mess.

Hej

HOLY FUCK. This is the heaviest thing I've heard since Instruments Disorder. And it really, REALLY gives that album a run for its money. Easily one of the most hateful things I've heard in a while (actually, probably ever). Absolutely PERFECT way to open a record like this, holy fuck man this was literally mouth dropping from that moment right through till the end. Amazing album art to top it all too. >Dream Pop

M83 if they were Gonzalez tried to make dream pop during Dead Cities. And if it was written and produced by one guy.

It's also got the same kind of breathy vocals on Ceres & Calypso in the Deep Time. This album isn't nearly as dense, a bit angstier and dark-- honestly preferable to C&C. Nothing too surprising for a dream pop album.

Fav tracks: Liquid Sugar, Don't Fear

6/10

>Jamire Williams - Effectual
>Drummin Jazz

As a percussionist, this was a weird listen. It's an improvised, very smooth solo drums album, reflective of Jamire's effortless playing. Occasional bits of electronics leak in, which Williams would play alongside-- most of the time, it's ambience or simple loops. His rolls are spot on, and he gives his cymbals room to ring.

Tracks like TRUTH REMAINS CONSTANT and Chase the Ghost are able to utilize a very small selection of sounds and construct them into 4 or 5 minute songs. Because of the constant exposure, they end up doing something similar to Reich, in which one can suddenly perceive a breathy drum or cymbal sizzle differently.

While the opening tracks are much more traditional jazz drumming, other tracks like ILLUMINATIONS and wash me over (Pollock's Pulse) are evocative and image-building. With the latter track, the brushes make it feel like I'm watching some ancient dance near a river, and the kick drum is the stand-in for whatever giant drums are accompanying it.

This is not an easy listen. It's quite a risk, filling an entire album with only percussion. You deprive it of catchy hooks to hum, of an extra pallete of flavor that comes from acoustic and electronic tones alike.

I respect what Williams has created here, however. Percussion is a primal force, and percussion is what humans played first. I think Williams manages to tap into that feeling with this record.

7/10

WAR - The World Is a Ghetto (1972)
>soul, funk

Basic funky soul with some latin influences. Takes some influence from Curtis Mayfield with how lush and heavily orchestrated it is, but in taking this element of Mayfield’s music they seemed to have overlooked taking the energy and sheer funkiness of his music as well. The shorter tracks are the best, because they have the album’s most active arrangements, and they counteract how much of a slog the three long tracks are, sadly not enough to make this any more than a passable record.

2.0+

Death Grips - Steroids (Crouching Tiger Hidden Gabber Megamix) (2017)
>industrial hip hop, hardcore hip hop, experimental hip hop

The last “track” here is really great, it’s the most blatant attempt at gabber on this mix and it’s a really cool, fast-paced, unrelenting work. The rest is really not my thing. It seems that I mostly like Death Grips when they’re more deliberately paced, because the skittering sound of this, especially when it comes to Ride’s chopped-up vocals, can get mighty irritating, and the occasional rock influences aren’t implemented very well. It’s a really energetic twenty minutes, and I sure like it more than Bottomless Pit, but I think I’m kinda over these guys.

Faust - Faust so Far
HOT ONION TIME: this was better than Faust I, it's less experimental to be sure, but it was just a really fun time

John Fahey - The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death
This isn't as good as practically everything I've heard from him, but it was still kind of an ok album

Rabih Abou-Khan - Camel
This was great, middle eastern jazz is underrated, it's like those Indian raga albums everyone pretends to like but with actual structure and a more western flavor, (the tongue is far in the cheek)

Rabih Abou-Khan - Cactus
Also good, just less good than the camel one

Loren Mazzacane Connor - Airs
Sure, it's relaxing, but I think this could put me to sleep if I let it, not in a good way either

Someone wanted thoughts on Tom Ze
Was good, great to cook to (made stroganoff for my Sisters yesterday, it was like John motherfucking Favro up in that bitch) but it did get a little annoying towards the back half of the album, will listen to again

>The 2 Live Crew - As Nasty As They Wanna Be
Very fun stuff. The lyrics are fun (and meant to be), but sometimes overly so, the delivery is very 80s, which I like. The beats are rather dry sometimes, they have a nice southern vibe, but are mostly meant to direct the listening to the lyrics, which are good, but can be kind of childish (not really the good word, but can't think of how to say it). Still fun, summery vibes tho, I'd put this on at a bbq.

>decibelles - tight
few things i dislike more than annoying female punk vocalists, and this iteration is no exception; the vocals are a constant screechy yelp, making the usually generic punk instrumentals even more grating to listen to. however, there are some good tracks: "super fish" has a nice little melody going for it, and "all wet" has guitar work that makes it almost great.

>John Coltrane - Coltrane Live at Birdland
Good, comfy jazz.
3.5/5
>The Roots - undun
Quite different pace from Things Fall Apart, and while I liked that record better along with its way more upbeat vibe, the melancholy and emotion here was also very nice to listen to as well. Was happy to see Sufjan (although most people probably weren't). Overall, some good chill shit, but not special or anything like that.
3.5/5
>Tomita - Snowflakes Are Dancing
Aww :3, this is so... magical. Honestly that's all I want to say about this, great synth-based classical music. Huge highlight of the album is "Arabesque No. 1"

>blanche blanche blanche - wink with both eyes
a decidedly weird lo-fi pop record with a monotone vocalist - what's not to like? from what i could decipher, the lyrics are strangely poetic, with a hint of mysterious romanticism. the instrumentals, warm and sparse (but busy too, somehow) complement them perfectly. i can't help but enjoy the whole aesthetic and atmosphere.
>patty waters - sings
the first half is comprised of eerie but pleasant jazz pop tunes - waters is a good vocalist even when subdued. the last track is a serious distillation of mania, and waters is a better vocalist when not subdued. i wouldn't call it "terrifying," but "unsettling" doesn't seem to match the track's power. quite captivating.

Not sure if I'd quite call that Coltrane comfy but it's a great one nonetheless! Also if you didn't know, Undun is a story about a guy's life told in reverse. The narrative is pretty well done, with the more paranoid tracks like "Sleep" and "Lighthouse" kicking off until that suite that's his birth.

Anyway, glad you enjoyed!
