How does a sixty-something man still have this voice?

I assume he looks after it. Age isn't a huge factor on the singing voice, a lot of singers overuse their voice and don't do proper vocal exercise
Cuz he didn't fuck it up with cigarettes and meth
>>73088398
im surprised he still has his hearing
probably doesnt drink milk or eat ice cream or cheese
dairy is bad for your singing voice
>>73088398
he learned to sing really loud and it made his vocal chords stronger
>>73088715
Fair enough
I suppose the same goes for his hearing, being around loud noises since your 20s
>>73088751
some people hold on to their hearing really well
and people overestimate how loud it actually is on stage, and in the timespan of a show your hearing is able to do a lot to protect itself

I hate those people who are like "YOU GOTTA WEAR EARPLUGS TO A SWANS CONCERT OR YOU'LL FUCKING DIE"
Gira never really sang, he just angrily yelled and talked really deep.
He even said he was never a singer, or even a guitar player
Glenn Hughes is 65 and still has the overwhelming majority of his range intact. It's doubly baffling when you consider how much time he spent smoking crack in the '80s.

seriously, they're incredibly powerful but not particularly loud compared to most heavy music. it's always good to protect your hearing but swans is really not that special in that regard
also gira will kick you in the face and laugh if he sees you wearing earplugs =^)
>>73088590
He has horrible tetanus.
>>73088398
Never listened to swans before. This sounds exactly like Korn, is Nu-Metal back again?

>>73089358
... you mean tinnitus?
>>73089448
Oxygen isn't really a good representation of Swans' style, the reason why I started this thread with it is because I think it showcases Gira's voice really well

Here are a couple that sound very Swans-y
>>73088807
I talked to the sound guy at one of their shows, he was talking it was 130+dB (eq. dose over soundcheck) in the audience and 120-125 on stage, so spending a life listening to that surely has to have an effect.
>>73088880
I always have and always will wear earplugs to swans shows :^)
>>73088751
> Years of playing at high volumes without earplugs have left Gira, 60, with tinnitus, the sound of which he likens to “the constant shuffling of waves in the ocean.”
>“I don’t listen to music — at least, certainly for the last four or five years — because my ears are so taxed,” he says. “It’s like someone that’s eaten too much meat. You know, you just feel weighted down — the last thing you want to do is eat it again.”
so no, loud noises hasn't made his hearing tougher
>>73089759
Ah well
Saw them last night for the first time; they were incredible
>>73090131
>you will probably never see Swans
Living in New Zealand sucks. They came one time in 2011, but I wasn't even a fan at that point
>>73090158
That's unfortunate. It was weird; the Ireland gig was announced really late, and when I went onto their website to check, they were scheduled to play in Russia or something
>>73088398
You think he turns off the air conditioning for no reason?
>>73088590
He only barely does. He has very severe tinnitus and you have to repeat everything you say to him at least twice because of it.
>Nu-Swans has been around for almost half as long as their original run
>>73088398
He didn't actually start being able to sing decently until The Great Annihilator. His earlier stuff is either all shouting or very bad monotone singing. On New Mother and Angels of Light records he can actually sing.
