/daily/ - 10000 tourneys edition

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

if you have a tourney and im not in it its not a real tourney

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Quick review dump, only had time for one full review. The rest are short cause I've been busy :/

[1/2?]

Deep Purple - Deep Purple In Rock
>Hard Rock

How do you ensure woolite likes an album? Pro tip - throw an organ on it. It’s an automatic plus for me. I’m pretty sure you could throw an organ on the world’s worst album and I’d be like “there were some nice grooves on here” or some stupid phrase I use in all of my reviews. Something about that instrument just sticks with me.

Anyway, I’m pretty conflicted about this sound as a whole. A lot of music I was exposed to when I was younger was kind of in this vein of 70s rock so part of me really wants to like this. Then again, I’m super burnt out on it and have moved pretty far away from this sound. All biases (hopefully) aside, this is some solid stuff. I mean, nothing about this screams innovative or amazing like some worshipers might claim but it’s fun, mindless rock. Maybe it’s childhood me just kind of shining through but I dug this more than I was expecting. Lots of energy, fun riffs and a straightforward sound.

I know /daily/ likes to shit on this kind of bluesy hard rock because so many people like to put it on a pedestal but this is some solid stuff. Nice and simple, catchy songs and the atmospheric “Child In Time” somehow kinda lives up to its inflated reputation. Somehow miles better than Machine Head, even though it came out two years earlier. A few longer tracks could do with some trimming (especially the closer ugh) but other than that, I don’t have any issues with this. Nothing in particular stands out as amazing either.

3/5

Rae Sremmurd - Sremmlife
>Trap Rap

Pretty okay party styled rap. Nice and fun but only a few tracks pop out in one way or another. Deserves neither the praise nor the hate it gets, it’s alright all around.

2.5
>>
>>73085596
no reviews, only tourneys >:0
>>
>>73085596
[2/2]

Public Enemy - Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Back
>Political Hip-Hop

This solidifies, in my mind, that PE’s original run was nearly untouchable. Chuck D is angry as ever, ripping through these cuts with so much damn passion and energy. Flava Flav actually steps up on a few of the songs here too. Production is amazing as always and the stretch from “Shut Em Down” - “Bring the Noise” is ridiculous.

4

Grant Green - Feelin’ The Spirit
>Soul Jazz

Green covering a bunch of old spirituals and gospel classics. So it’s pretty much as amazing as you’d expect, dude’s guitar playing is smooth as ever and there’s so much passion going into tracks like “Go Down Moses” and “Deep River”. Hancock is also all over this one, pounding on the piano, adding nice little twinkly touches throughout. Feel like /daily/ would like this because of the gospel thing going on.

4.5

Bon Iver - Bon Iver, Bon Iver
>Indie Folk

For some reason I completely glossed over this release. I loved the sparser *For Emma*, was briefly obsessed with it and didn’t come back to Bon Iver until *22AM* came out. But man, this might be my favorite so far. The instrumentation is much more lush and the slight electronic twinge is perfect. I can’t say I was a big fan of the full on electronic stuff on *22AM* but this is like a perfect middle ground. Prime modern folk, will definitely be coming back to this more.

4.5

Warren G - Return of the Regulator
>West Coast Hip-Hop

The beauty of Regulate is that it’s concise and easy-going, with some nice standouts along the way. This is 60 minutes and doesn’t deserve that length. Warren simply isn’t that great of an MC and he’s awkward compared to the guests on here and he shouldn’t be rapping as long as he is. Great beats and at least decent all around though.

3

Chuck Berry - Berry Is on Top (1959)
>rock & roll

Undeniably talented singer, guitar player, and songwriter, of course, but tracks like “Johnny B. Goode” and “Roll Over Beethoven” don’t pack the same punch they once did. They’re just really quaint and unassuming, and frankly they pale in comparison to the more experimental tracks here. There’s a lot of really cool tracks here that experiment with new-fangled production techniques (most notably a lot of reverb) and some absolutely blistering guitar work, like “Jo Jo Gun”, “Hey Pedro”, and “Blues for Hawaiians”. These experiments are fresh, well-done, and really damn cool, and I can’t say the same about the rock & roll outside of “Maybelline”.

2.5+

Wilson Pickett - The Exciting Wilson Pickett (1966)
>southern soul, deep soul

An ecstatic, endlessly energetic thirty minutes dragged down by a couple less-than-stellar tracks that occupy a more ballad-based sound. I expected something a tad smoother judging by the admittedly kinda corny cover, but from the opening of the absolutely perfect “Land of 1000 Dances”, with it’s distorted horns and throat-scratching vocals, I was immediately proved wrong. What follows in an album that’s mostly hit after hit after hit, save for the few slower tracks I mentioned that retread the same ground as tracks like the opener without the energy or grit.

Lemonheads - It's a Shame About Ray (1992)
>power pop, alternative rock

A ‘90s power pop album through and through, for better or for worse. The title track is great, as is the mesh of acoustic and electric instrumentation, but everything here is done better on a hundred other records, and I don’t care for the vocals which are usually a huge part of power pop for me. Just listen to Bandwagonesque or Pinkerton and save yourself some time.

Ok I'm gonna post reviews don't hate me

X - Los Angeles (1980)
>Punk Rock
Supremely catchy, though stereotypical, punk rock with a few quirky instrumentation choices (wait, what the hell, that *is* Ray Manzarek playing the Hammond on their cover of “Soul Kitchen”). I also like the rumbling psychobilly undercurrents all over this. The title track is an undeniable punk classic.
>7+/10

Slowdive - Just for a Day (1991)
>Shoegaze, Dream Pop
Massive, sweeping shoegaze epics. I love the dreamy, soaring guitars, but the whole thing is a bit of a vague wash. While the best tracks do stand out in a weird unidentifiable way (the songwriting hidden under all that reverb must be better on some tracks), the rest tends to blend together.
>7-/10

Yuck - Yuck (2011)
>Indie Rock, Noise Pop
Crunchy, well-written, but fairly stock-standard contemporary indie rock. There are a few cool, nearly shoegaze sections, but those are few and far between. Pitchfork would’ve loved this had it been released in 2004. The last track is actually a fantastic, clamorous orgy of noise and indie rock aesthetics, which I obviously loved.
>5/10

Bratmobile - Pottymouth (1993)
>Riot Grrrl
Twee riot grrrl-type punk—super stripped down, almost surf-sounding simplicity and riffing. They don’t really bring anything too interesting too the table though as far as songwriting, so I probably won’t be returning. Listening to the whole thing was a bit of a chore.
>5-/10

Arthur Russell - Calling Out of Context (2004)
>”Art Pop”, Synthpop, Disco
A few of the tracks are curiously closer to house and techno than disco or synthpop, and then there’s the usual ever-present, abstract, hazy, Arthur Russell aesthetic. Overall though, I’m a bit disappointed considering the considerable hype behind this record. It’s pretty good for a posthumous compilation though.

Walter Gibbons - Jungle Music: Mixed With Love (Essential & Unreleased Remixes 1976-1986)
>Disco, (House?)
Jungle Music completely upends the trade-off between “influential” and “accessible” often inherent to these kinds of discovery comps: every song here is a cutting-edge monument to early disco and garage, and it’s mind-blowing how good they sound. Even the 1976 remix of Double Exposure’s “Ten Percent”—the first ever commercially available 12” single—is absolutely stellar.

The tracks here alternate between full-blown, vibrant pop soul symphonies and deep, extended dub grooves, and Gibbons pulls this off masterfully. I usually try not to give too much weight to primacy, but it’s really crazy to hear how good this music is for how early and inventive his mixing was.
>8/10

Wished Bone - pseudo recordings (2015)
>Indie Pop, Lo-fi, Singer-songwriter
This twee lady speaks directly to my soul when she sings the truest and saddest and most beautiful songs about real love I ever did hear. Sounds like Beat Happening, but warbly, and there’s some beautiful melismas and key changes n’ shit
>9-/10

Animal Collective - Meeting of the Waters (2017)
>Psychedelic Folk, Field Recordings, Ambient
Very abstract, watery, etherial psych tracks from Avey and Geologist. It feels like a bit of an apology record to longtime fans: “we’re sorry we’ve been releasing these shitty, half-baked, ADHD psych pop bits for the past few albums and EPs.” This is like a desperate attempt to recreate Here Comes the Indian-era AnCo (unsuccessfully—goes without saying). At the very least it’s pleasant enough, and “Man of Oil” is a decent tune. Like most AnCo these days though, I can’t see myself returning. It’s just not compelling.
>5/10
>>
Truckfighters - Gravity X (2005)
>Stoner Rock, Heavy Psych
Basically just applies the Kyuss stoner rock sound, verbatim (down to the quirky interlude tracks), to consistently well-written, catchy melodies. And I love the scorched desert vibe all over this. It starts out strong, but gets a bit tiring by the end, unfortunately. Also Kyuss does their own sound a bit better, you know.
>6+/10

Perfume Genius - Learning (2010)
>Singer/songwriter, Bedroom Pop
Decent little delicate, lo-fi, melancholy piano tunes. Every song kind of sounds like it’s trying to be “Casimir Pulaski Day”, piano edition, and that’s a fine pursuit if any. It’s a bit same-y though, if brief. “Mr. Peterson” is a disturbing and profoundly saddening song.
>7-/10

Perfume Genius - Put Your Back N 2 It (2012)
>Singer/songwriter, Chamber Folk, Bedroom Pop
Venturing outside the bedroom, Hadreas adds some more instrumentation and diversifies the songwriting a bit. It still has a sad streak to it, but it’s occasionally offset by more emotionally complicated/ambiguous tracks. Still kinda sounds like Sadjan Stevens pretty often though, sometimes even Fleet Foxes. If you told me “Dark Parts” was a Sufjan song I wouldn’t blink.
>6/10

Alex G - Rocket (2017)
>Singer/songwriter, Indie Rock
Well-written and delicate as always, but a little more subdued than his previous works. Here Alex trades a bit of his lo-fi grittiness for pretty melodies and better production. Not an uncommon trajectory, but a bit disappointing none the less. Also I was hoping for some more memorable tunes.

Getting a little scared that he’s never going to surpass Trick too.
>5+/10

Ross From Friends - You’ll Understand (2017)
>Outsider House, Deep House
Three vibrant, post-internet, lo-fi house jams. I like “Talk to Me You’ll Understand” the most. “Gettin’ It Done” is maybe a little too repetitive. I love how these tracks sound simultaneously chill and jittery.
>6/10
>>
Saagara - 2 (2017)
>Minimalism, Jazz Fusion
A vague collection of different permutations of the same jazz-fusion and classically minimalist formulas. Pleasant enough, if a bit boring, but either way, I’ve listened to this album twice and I remember nothing. And I’ve seen this called ambient, but it’s way too active and involved, in my opinion.

It’s missing any sort of edge or bite, which I think is my biggest issue with it.
>5+/10

The Lemon Twigs - Do Hollywood (2016)
>Pop Rock, Psychedelic Pop, Glam Rock
60s and 70s pop revival, à la Foxygen. The influence of bands like the Beatles, Elton John, and Queen is nigh omnipresent. As one RYM reviewer so accurately describes, Lemon Twigs are a “never-ending collage of pastiche.” They do, however, have their moments: “I Wanna Prove to You” has a 10/10 climax, “These Words” is entertaining self-reference, “As Long as We’re Together”). I also enjoyed how the whole album semi-smoothly transitions from one song to the next too, all Sgt. Peppers-like.
>6+/10

Travis Scott - Days Before Rodeo (2014)
>Trap Rap
I do not get the hype. I guess he was good for a late MySpace/early Soundcloud artist? The production is dark and moody, sure, but I don’t think these songs are very memorable.
>5-/10

Death Grips - Steroids (Crouching Tiger Hidden Gabber Megamix) [2017]
>Industrial Hip-hop, Hardcore techno
This mix is an intense, tightly wound, hyper-chromatic nightmare. It really ups the ante for propulsive energy and aggression in a DG release, thanks in part to the hardcore techno (and I guess “gabber”) influences. Hell, I don’t even know what to do with myself after listening to this.

>5-/10

Today is the Day - Willpower (1994)
>Noise Rock, Noisecore, Post-hardcore
One of my all-time favorite album covers is now one of my all-time favorite albums. This is fantastic post-hardcore-level songwriting—equal parts dark ’n’ demented, and anthemic—coupled with incredibly intense, dense, deafening noise rock and noisecore. It’s as memorable and catchy as it is experimental and noisy. The sampled intros to songs are particularly effective too.

Also it’s a really great feeling when you’re really enjoying an album, but then the last song is actually the best song yet.
>9+/10

Negative Approach - Negative Approach EP (1982)
>Hardcore Punk
I was expecting something positively evil from the cover, but instead I got slightly more gruff and pummeling of the usual hardcore punk stuff. They even occasionally sound like The Urinals (or Minor Threat), even, which is about as bright and poppy as classic hardcore punk gets. It’s still really well done, though. Every song is really catchy and actually fairly uniquely written. 9 minutes well spent.
>7/10

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes EP (2006)
>Indie Rock
Pecknold’s soaring, disembodied voice is about the only constant here. The rest is nothing like the Fleet Foxes we all know (and love, right?), but it’s still plenty fun. The songs are concise, vibrant, and catchy indie rock—scant folk influences here.

le tortoise guy
Itoh Masyitoh - Naon Margina
>Jaipongan, RYMcore

This is some truly fascinating music; it's as though every part of this unusual ensemble exists in their own dimension without interacting with one another, and yet, the music comes together with the utmost care. It's easy for this music to put you in a trance; Masyitohs voice is slow and full of mystery, while the drums and gongs have endless energy; this contrast works out very well in making something stunningly hypnotic. Each track feels like it could go on forever without much issue.

Another weird thing: This is structured more like a western album with a cohesive flow from beginning to end instead of being more of a random smattering of songs like most of these SEA curiosities are.

3.5/5, could see it going up

le bread guy
One Million Bulgarians - Pierwsza płyta
>Post-punk, Coldwave, Gothic Rock, Industrial Rock

The Beksiński art on the cover would make you anticipate something very dark and disturbing, but this is honestly pretty run of the mill Gothy post-punk with some particularly jagged guitar and synth playing. There's some good moments spread throughout where the band goes out of their comfort zone, but being an archival comp it ends up feeling like a mess out of outtakes thrown together with little regard for quality. I think if the band actually put out something more cohesive, it would be pretty good, but alas.

2.5/5

>松岡直也 [Naoya Matsuoka] - 夏の旅
Mindnumbing cheesy but catchy melodies: the album. The kind of stuff you naturally find yourself nodding your head to. Extremely clean and warm. I think it's worth restating how mindnumbing this is, almost comically so. Sometimes this was for the better, and other times for the worse.
3.5/5
>Suffocate for Fuck Sake - Blazing Fires and Helicopters on the Front Page of the Newspaper. There's a War Going On and I'm Marching in Heavy Boots.
Very interesting concept (thanks for telling me about it borzoi, the translated spoken word sections helped as well). But honestly, over an hour of mainly spoken word that was in a different language became dull pretty quickly. Yeah it was interesting, and I've always been interested in mental disorders (the theme here), but I guess as a whole it didn't really work that well for me. The best parts were the screamo sections, which were good but way too far inbetween.
2.5/5
>Ulver - Teachings in Silence
I really enjoyed the dark, depressing atmosphere this had, which was the main point they were trying to achieve here in my eyes: atmosphere. Musically it wasn't that impressive (which probably wasn't Ulver's main goal anyway), and I've heard better atmospherically, but it was definitely enjoyable.

>Yōran - Montparnasse
I loved the depressive atmosphere of this release. Its a sound collage of samples from obscure french films, and it created an awesome soundscape. Its a short enough listen that i can see myself coming back to it time and time again
3.5-
>Keiji Haino - Watashi Dake?
Another good Keiji release. I definitely agree with all the comparisons to Jandek on this one, as it had a similar sort of vibe. There were some parts on here that were super cathartic, but the whole album is kind of a tough listen. Keiji sounds really broken on this album, both with his vocals and his playing. It's a powerful experience I could see growing on me quickly very soon.
3.0+
>Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus Seven
Just some essential proto-vaporwave, really dug the atmosphere on it. I don't have too much to say other than it was a nice listen.
3.0
>Funeral Music of Chiang Mai
I'm not gonna pretend like I wasn't bored of this by track 4. I'm sorry guys, but to me it's just the same song repeated for different lengths every track. It's like being at an actual funeral service, but its just as boring. I wish I could into it, but I don't think I can with this one.

trip up: autechre - rae

Interesting tune from the British eye dee em duo. I like the progression of the song from comfy but intense to calm and melancholy. Neato.

yamir: terje rypdal - wes

Mhm it's good jazz. Neato changes in rhythm. I don't have much to say.

jimmy jazz: nick cave - lament

Good tune. I don't like Cave's voice as much as here tho as I do on other tracks. Still, nice mellow stuff.

Torts: Popol Vuh - Aguirre I (L'acrime di rei)

Nice ambient meme. Probably goes better with the movie but whatever it's cool.

trans: Arca - Mutant

Dangerino I've been sleeping on Arca for a while. This was p good. Interesting soundscape. Nice.

ricebeansandegg: Terre Thaemlitz - Facilitator

Wew spoken word and abstract bleeps. Sometimes a bit boring but it's ok. Yes. :)

¿: Four Tet - Gillie Amma, I Love You

Decent bleeps. I can tell that the intention here was something beautiful but I just wasn't feeling it too much. Not bad tho, just not too good.

oneothe: Mine Kawakami - Tooge no Mori

Okay solo piano meme. The melody wasn't to my tastes desu but it had a comfy vibe. Not really my thing tho.

Thee Oh Sees - Carrion Crawler / The Dream EP (2011)
>garage punk, psychedelic rock

An usually weak effort from an otherwise nice band. “The Dream” is a phenomenal track, a sun-fried slice of furious garage punk, unique in the context of the album as it lacks a repetitive angle. The vast majority of tracks here are incredibly monotonous, occasionally in a groovy krautrock-influenced way, but mostly in a way that just begs some aspect of the track to change. The band gets some solid jams going, led by the stabbing guitar and the falsetto vocals of Dwyer, but practically every one fizzles out. A missed opportunity.

2.5-

Toro y Moi - Causers of This (2010)
>chillwave

Less a cohesive chillwave album, more a scattershot collection of summery samples. Toro y Moi brings together a lot of cool, tropical rhythms and soundscapes with little to no cohesion, and without the pure sampling genius of something like Since I Left You. It’s stuck in an odd place between a SILY-influenced plunderphonics record and a normal indie pop record, and it never really goes either way, leaving the listener with an awkward mix of the two. Some highlights, with some undeniable sampling genius, but too loose and awkward.

S U R R E A L. Yeah, I knew this was gonna be weird going into it. I'd heard about the film before and even if I didn't, it's David Lynch so that'd still be my expectation. It definitely met my standards both in terms of strangeness and quality. Thankfully, the film did this in a unique way which I always find myself appreciating. Cool and fun film.

damn this post is further proof that I have to start writing again so I can get at least slightly better at """reviewing"""

Question: Is it cheating to use a VA comp as your AOTY?

If not, this has to be it:
https://rateyourmusic.com/release/comp/various-artists/outro-tempo-electronic-and-contemporary-music-from-brazil-1978-1992/

I mean you can guess what it's gonna be from the title, but the range of different shit on here is impeccable. For something that has a lot of quirky electronic moments, the fusion of Samba/MPB instruments keep it surprisingly down-to-Earth, which is super rare for something this New Age-y. Very hard rec for just how interesting of a project it is. Even if you don't enjoy it through-and-through you're down to get at least something out of it.

morning /daily/ - here are some reviews from last night
>washington phillips - key to the kingdom
a collection of gorgeous, crackly recordings of soulfully sung gospel tunes, this comp is ridiculously likable. the combination of the mystical twinkling of phillips's instrument and the rasp of his voice creates a uniquely wholesome sound through which phillips's gospel message is funneled. some of these songs are remarkable in idea and execution, while others that are pedestrian on paper are made interesting because of phillips's sound. didn't care too much for the bonus tracks not by phillips, but overall, it's a great compilation.
>thinking fellers union local 282 - mother of all saints
i like this a bit better than strangers from the universe, and i'm not sure why; the song-focused nature of that record seems like it would cater to my tastes, but i find myself more compelled by the ideas here. it's a fellers record: off the wall, wacky, but with enough synthesis of ideas to make it thoroughly enjoyable. great stuff.

Sorority Noise - You're Not As _____ As You Think (2017)
>Emo, Indie Rock

Sorority Noise is one of those bands that all my emo friends talk about but I've never cared about, not even during the time I almost exclusively listened to emo. Nothing ever clicked, I listened to Forgettable a few times and it was just sooo boring (and Forgettable, geddit) and I even saw them live.
Now THIS album on the other hand was actually really good, and I would probably never listen to it if it hadn't been for this tourney. They feel like they have matured a lot as band and the entire album just feel like they are safe in what they are doing. It sounds like what Modern Baseball would sound like if they didn't suck.
This is an album for cuddling with qt emos during the summer :--)

3/5
Little Kid - Logic Songs (2011)
>Indie Folk, Lo-Fi Indie

Aaaaah now THIS is my jam. This is everything I like in this genre, and I love how very lo-fi it is. It isn't "let's record it kinda badly because that's cool", it's lo-fi for real.
Such an extremely cozy record that I know for a fact I will listen to a lot in the future. It even fits plenty of different seasons; I can for sure see myself listening to this on summer nights, but also in the winter when I'm snowed in in my house. Great stuff.
It's fun because I have some unreleased songs I've made which is basically exactly this sound too so I love it

3.5/5
