I don't have any problems with this. Am I a normie? I enjoy talking about music with everyone. I've listened to a lot of pop music even though it's not my favorite just so I can talk to people about it. Once you start a conversation with someone and find out what popular bands they like you can easily branch off and recommend more obscure, potentially better, artists.

I had to read this 5 times to even understand what it meant, and now that I do, I'm not really sure I see the reason for such a strong negative reaction towards it.

Honestly, If I'm talking about music with someone I don't do anything. I listen to what they are saying, I nod, I say "oh yea yea, cool" about whatever music they mention, I never recommend anything, I never talk about bands I like. I just listen and agree with whatever the fuck they say. Sometimes it makes me look dumb, sometimes it makes them think I know some band they like which can lead to confusion later if they start talking about it more indepth which leads to again them thinking I'm dumb. But hey, I'd 100% rather someone think I'm just a little dumb than they think I'm a huge gaping pretentious asshole.

After people get to know me and realize how into music I am, they start asking for recommendations, and I still keep it very low key and recommend starter things in their given genre. I never go balls deep unless they seem like they really want it. It's all about allowing them the opportunity to discover your deep love for music, not shoving it in their face. let them think whatever they want of you when it comes to music and if they get the chance to discover your passion for it in a organic, natural way (not by you telling them about it) then it will become a much greater facet of your personality to them.

You can do this with literally any interest you are deeply involved in. Writing, video games, books, whatever. Let people discover who you are on their own, don't tell them. It leads to people liking you much more, makes you seem humble, and honest, it's great, and who cares if the guy at the bar who you will only meet once thinks your a bit stupid, the people who matter will learn better once getting to know you.

There's nothing wrong with sharing a genuine opinion, and if someone begins to talk about a band or artist I really enjoy, I'm all for starting a serious discussion about music publicly with people I don't know.

The situation we're talking about in this thread is where someone who has average taste in music (top 40, classic rock maybe, entry level edm or something) starts to talk to you - I will have nothing but very neutral or negative things to say about those artist 80% of the time. There are artists that the average person knows who are genuinely great artists, but 80% of the time it's going to be a band I don't hold a high opinion on, and I'm not to share negative views on something someone likes after just meeting them, it's not fun for either of us to do that.

I completely agree that if you naturally, organically, begin a serious discussion about music with strangers - so long as you are well spoken and have original and interesting opinions others will want to chime in 100% it can be a great social lubricator.

However, it would be not socially wise to do so often. It's a scenario that has to arise naturally, not from yourself. Don't take it upon yourself or make it a goal to be that person, you will come off as an asshole and only attract other assholes who are just looking to debate stupid shit. Which is what you sound like you are. You're the guy I'm nodding and smiling at. You're the guy I'm agreeing with on your shitty bands, because I don't want to sound like you, and I don't want to have an actual discussion about music with you.

i wasn't on board til that last paragraph. there's definitely a balance to strike with this. it helps that i'm always wearing band shirts (and not of like nirvana) so people either recognize the band and get what i'm about (which is dope) or ask about my shirt, find out they don't know the band, and assume i know more about music than them. if none of that happens all it takes is throwing out some well thought out names - gauge who youre talking to and when they ask favorite band answer accordingly. if it's a basic normie don't even bother, but if you suspect you're talking to someone cool then throw out those p4kcore bands.

the real lesson here is 1 dont have autism 2 dont just show your entire hand the first time you meet someone. i know this insinuates meeting people more than once but that's usually the case, at least if youre like me and you only hang out 2 different places. if you constantly drop hints about yourself people want to get to know you more - if in the first 15 minutes of conversation you go "yeah im so into music and film, here's a list of all my favorites" then what's there left to discover, what more could they gain by talking to you any longer? you dont even have to be that interesting, just play your cards slowly - each time someone learns even a small thing new about you theyll go "wow anon is so interesting i never wouldve guessed that!"
