Reclusive. We don't really know anything about her anymore and she feeds us only irrelevant selective neurotypal information (e.g. happy/active life illusion on social media).
>>
>>73078979
This. But then would we be as intrigued if we knew every nuance and snippet of what she was doing all day.

11:45am - Had a shit.
11:46am - Had some juice...

See what I mean? I mean i'm not above this information. I think it's genuinely interesting. But at some point the woman has to cut back and live her life. Specially after touring as hard as she did in recent years.

She used to give her own thoughts on some topics instead of random propaganda retweets. And her photos are now very sterile and void. She is almost completely depersonified.
>>
>>73079460
Grimes does all her personal stuff on Instagram now because people actually take Twitter seriously.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BUue_zxgWHT/
>>
>>73079460
Yeah it would be interesting to hear her thought on things. Wonder why she doesn't do that anymore?
>>
>>73079351
Awwwweh I love her now
>>
>>73079460
>>73079605
Why? Because media make articles based on anything she does. There's a reason why she never really promoted her more personal IG account trashique2.

She took some PR lessons from Roc Nation, her mgmt company. Her being depersonified is just an illusion because she chose to share less about her life.
>>
>>73079651
Hmmm yeah that sounds problematic. But she should be free to express herself as she pleases. Then again, are we sure some sort of legal contract/constraint isn't to blame? Ie. she's not allowed to say x, y, and z?
>>
>>73079605
>Wonder why she doesn't do that anymore?

>A: Is it tempting to try to speak directly to your fans about politics at a show, or write something on your blog?
>G: Even that gets taken out of context. The times that I have done that, it’s the same thing. It’s almost worse when you do it on Twitter or something, because it becomes a free-for-all. I’ve basically stopped using social media for anything like that.
>A: That must feel awful.
>G: Instead of being like, 'Pandas are endangered!’ you have to be like, 'It’s World Panda Day! Let’s celebrate. There are only four hundred left.’ You have to spin everything into something that feels positive. Semiotics are really important. Visuals are really important. Instagram is so much more effective. Words can be taken out of context, but a picture is a picture. Think about a lot of the great leaders– or not necessarily great, but powerful. They always had really extreme aesthetics. Genghis Khan. Mussolini. I’m not pro-fascist, but people really respond to aesthetics. I’ve done these sociological tests where I try different hair colours. Blue and purple hair gets the most likes on Instagram. It’s almost double the likes that it is for blonde, brown or pink. I find it very interesting that you can directly measure what kind of visuals people respond to.

Fascinating. So it seems then by the last part then that she's almost assuredly keeping herself out of the public eye (dyed her hair black -- not as resonant with social). Whereas I figure if she was in a promotion cycle it might be pink or blue (as per her research).

Yeah I see how things get taken out of context with things most of the time, with other celebs, politicians etc. She's right. But she should still share her thoughts, maybe do some sort of in-depth posting on her fav. subjects or causes.

No, that's only applies to generic music industry plants who are devoid of any personality or intelligence. They are naturally encouraged to keep their thoughts to themselves. Pop music is of course full of them, creating illusion of some sort of vow of silence. Other musicians are not really restrained and can freely state their mind.
>>
>>73080067
I think there are levels of professionalism. Depending on the industry you're in, professionalism might be showing up on time, wearing a suit and being good at what you do.

In others professionalism might simply mean being the best YOU that you can be. And people eat it up. That's all that matters in some industries, that you keep selling. Whatever you do, keep doing it. Even if it means being a rock star, trashing your hotel suite and pissing on people left and right.

Like everything, seemingly, professionalism is subjective.

http://forthebeat.com/blog/2010/09/interview-with-grimes/

... I guess that sounds weird but Halfaxa is sort of my ‘medieval’ album. I wanted to attempt to evoke the feeling of believing in God in a very Medieval Christian way. I wanted to capture the beauty of being in a beautiful cathedral and hearing reverbed (naturally), devotional, vocal music and really believing in heaven and hell, and that the art that you are experiencing (visually, architecturally, sonically etc) is related to a higher platonic, metaphysical space, or comes directly from it through the medium of the artistic prophet. Hildegard von Bingen is my idol right now, and I feel like she would be a good example of someone through whome God spoke and beautiful music was made via her body by a divine being (or so she claims, and I’d like to believe). I feel like art in the middle ages was always addressing something beyond earthly experience, and I want to do the same. But I wanted it to be vague as to what it is beyond earthly experience that is being addressed. And I wanted the music to feel really good addictive. I love music that is very smooth to the ears, and has lots of low frequencies as I find high frequencies very grating.

Who knows how she's in real life, but in her public appearances she seems like a kind person. Maybe it's an illusion.
>>
>>73082917
Exactly. I hope not. I mean i've been reading about her and seeing her interviews and all that. She seems genuine. But again, one can't exactly distance themselves from having to make money or put on a show. So who knows if it's all theatrics. I doubt it, as even the most committed actor/actress would not be able to method act themselves something they are not forever. She seems consistent, behavior wise, anyway.
>>
>>73082966
>She seems consistent, behavior wise, anyway.
That's what made me think that she's genuine. No matter how good actor you are, at some point the mask will fall and your real personality will be on display.

Butterfly

>Venus in Fleurs
Pretty interesting, I like the guitars. I liked it more on second listen. Cool music video

>Genesis
Great melody and the eastern thing that comes in at 2:40 is great, vocals are interesting.

>Oblivion (favorite)
Really love this one, especial the vocal melody and the music video is really fun

>Be a Body
I like the main synth in the beginning, loses a bit of steam half way in for me

>Symphonia IX
I really like the atmosphere on this one and the change up in the last section is pretty haunting

>Rosa (least favorite)
Not really jamming with that guitar in this one - least favorite

>Weregild
Cool intro I like the vocal chopping. I like when all the vocals come in with that solid kick drum. Good atmosphere again.

>Realiti
Pretty great stuff in this song. Vocals are great and the instrumental is fun. Music video makes me want to travel

>Kill V. Maim
I like the energy in this one, It's a good change up from the rest. Cool to hear her get a little more wild with her voice. Pretty catchy, I like the outro.

>Butterfly
It's alright, this one doesn't really stand out in anyway to me, except for that little guitar breakdown that comes in a couple times.

I saw Grimes at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn?t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, ?Oh, like you?re doing now?? I was taken aback, and all I could say was ?Huh?? but he kept cutting me off and going ?huh? huh? huh?? and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like ?Sir, you need to pay for those first.? At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and and told her to scan them each individually ?to prevent any electrical infetterance,? and then turned around and winked at me. I don?t even think that?s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
>>
>>73085322
>Circumambient
I like the heavier start. Love all the vocals going on in this one

>Nightmusic (favorite)
Wow love the all that reverb crazy vocals. Really good stuff

>Flesh Without Blood
I recognize this song but never knew it was Grimes, was this in a commercial or something? Really good though, catchy and driving.

>Scream
The mirror effect stuff in the music video is awesome. I'm curious why this one is controversial. It's definitely pretty waked out. I liked the screams a lot, fun song.

>Devon
Love the intro and all the reverb is great as always. I really like that guitar I think it is? That comes in pretty clear at the very end

>Skin
That beat is super interesting, loving the sound on this one. Again with the reverb, I like how she lets it run it's course.

>Artangels
Very colorful, I like a lot of those sounds in the back. Feelin kinda regular off this one though

>Heartbeats (least favorite)
A little too slow and samey imo maybe a bit flat

>Venus Fly
I like the heavier bass in this song, kinda crazy. Enjoying the vocals a lot on this one. Really fun

>Vanessa
It's pretty good, I like when it comes back in at 3:29 in the music video version. Though a little uninteresting I think.

What have you heard?
Generally, Visions is the entry level to get into Grimes. In other cases, you can refer to this flowchart to find what you would like.
>>
>>73091227
What I've heard is the first 4 or so songs that pop up on YouTube when you search "Grimes"

That's it basically, her biggest songs.

I will use this flowchart thank you.

Huh? Most artists don't even have a song half as good as MW. That's not a sellout, just making something different. Stop being a grumpy old man.

>the good ones
Name 10.
>>
>>73093390
So wait, she's a sellout because she got a gig making a song for a movie?! LOL WTF. You know something, i'm hoping she does sell out one day and makes a fuck load of money doing so.

When she makes a song about hair care products or we see her on an infomercial for slapchop 5000 you let us know. 'Till then, I really don't think that counts as selling out.
>>
>>73093390

Especially in these days where piracy is sky high. Do hipsters like >>73093390 who rely on their parents' money really expect her to pay her bills with thin air?

>>73093390
Making a song (basically piece of art) for a film (piece of art again, regadless of your subjective opinions about it) is not sellout, ffs.
>>
>>73093524
Exactly. Some people are just very naive about how an artist is supposed to just make all this art and not get paid for it so they can "keep it real (TM)" or whatever the fuck.

It's no wonder artists are always viewed as poor as fuck throughout history. I guess most of them were afraid of being called a sellout.

"Hey Leonardo DaVinci, you're a fucking sellout with your fancy Mona Lisa and your fancy book learnin'. You were more OG when you were just drawing random shit..." I mean come on for fuck sakes.
>>
>>73093568
Good point. Also it's ridiculous to claim anything that sound too poppy as sellout. Do these morons had access to the artist's mind when the artist did that piece? How they could possibly know the real intent behind that piece?
>>
>>73093614
Yeah for sure. I never understood the sellout shit. Like an artist is just going to say "Oh no, I don't want millions of dollars, i'll just stay poor as fuck and barely be able to pay my bills just so I can keep my imaginary integrity points." LOL WTF.

>I never understood the sellout shit.
The way most people use it now (especially e.g. on this here darn imageboard) is entirely a meme.

>"Selling out" is a common idiomatic pejorative expression for the compromising of a person's integrity, morality, authenticity, or principles in exchange for personal gain, such as money.

To be a sell-out, someone would have to be doing something (that they clearly stated in the past they would never be willing to do) where the obvious game-changing factor was large sums of money.

The whole concept is extremely problematic, though, because artists are hardly ever capable of judging their self-worths as artists when they're first starting out. Therefore they have a tendency to make all sorts of outlandish comments/promises regarding what they will/won't do in their future careers because of them never taking the chance that they actually could be in a position to make loads of money doing something simple seriously.

My fav thing to do was to drive at night with that album on. I'd go driving into the countryside from the city and it'd get really dark and creepy with that music going. Hahaha it was awesome.

One time the full moon was out and there was a mist heavy and low on the ground like in a movie. I had halfaxa going and it was the middle of the night. Fit perfectly.
>>
>>73104984
Do you know what's fucked? I just realized I don't have that song on halfaxa. My version only has 15 tracks and that is one of 16 tracks on the original release.

Fucking fuck shit! I must find this damn thing now.
>>
>>73105076
Heartbeats is a bonus track that featured only on a few later versions of Halfaxa. It's a GORGEOUS song. Listen to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvXkx3IcOi4

Because it's a bonus track I keep it separate from the main album.
>>
>>73105295
According to my searches it was actually track 5 or 6 on the album, not a bonus? That kinda bugs me since I sprung to get the whole set of her albums.

I have the DL of the song, but it's not the same experience IMO if you're listening through. Now it seems incomplete. It's going to bug the shit out of me.

Anyone know why she removed it from the later releases?!

>>
>>73105374
Thanks for the link. I have a lot of those tracks already I think I may ... nope there are some I don't have. A lot of duplication though. I'll have to filter them down so I don't have doubles or triples.

I find a lot of the unreleased stuff album worthy if not some of them being better than album material. But that's just me.
>>

I feel like i've been screwed lol. I'm not mad but damn that bugs me.

This is what happens when i'm late to the game about all this stuff.
>>
>>73105438
Wait so the song was included on a repressing (rerelease?). I thought the 15 track one was the original release? I'm lost. So the rerelease has the new track? I guess I could see that being cool for new comers. But then it means i'd have to hunt down that damn rerelease then if I wanted the track proper (other than DL).

Hell, i'm still trying to get spare money together to get Darkblooms and d'Eon's album.
>>
>>73105329
>Now it seems incomplete. It's going to bug the shit out of me.

Don't worry, that song was added LATER. It was recorded at the same time with the other Halfaxa songs, though.
>>
>>73105440
>A lot of duplication though.
Check the quality of those duplicates. Maybe you have worse quality files.
>>
>>73105532
I'm going to check. I have a folder 'Various' already with 37 files, another with 'misc' which was, if I remember, part of the same package. I'm going to have to check these.
>>
>>73105494
>I thought the 15 track one was the original release?
Yes, that's the original. The repressing had Heartbeats as a bonus track. That's all. I wouldn't mess with the original, so I'd keep Heartbeats in a various/misc folder.
>>
>>73105329

>>73105438

>>
>>73105557

>>
>>73105567
I see now. All cleared up. Not sure i'll hunt down that repressing, it's such a minor thing but I feel like it'll bug me on future listenings of the album.
>>
>>73105604
Very cool. I'll have to see what i'm missing and the file quality. Granted these days the shit I listen to these on doesn't seem to matter if it's 192 or so.

I can readily hear 128 because it sounds muddy, I think the compression cuts the highs off a bit. 256+ would be great but I only ever hear that difference on good quality gear -- which I can neither afford or have at the moment. Sadly.

Bugs me too considering without a decent sub it's hard to get the full range out of her music since she seems to like recording everything super bassy. Her neighbors must have loved her when she was recording this lol.
>>
>>73105621
It wouldn't bug me at all. You listened to the original, nothing wrong with that. It would bug me the Spotify version of Halfaxa which is missing Rasik, for fuck' sake. Some copyright issues or something.

>>
>>73105654
Copyright issue?! WTF? Really? Yeah i'm not really in the know about her copyright stuff or rights management in general.

There was one interview where she was asked if she'd do any tracks with her brother (J Worthy?) and she said there was some legal nonsense that prevented her from getting into that. Didn't elaborate much more on that. She just said it was lawyer stuff.

Weird.
>>
Damn I just unpacked these libraries there is TONS of shit in here wow. I just totally fucked my library with these lol. There's like 20 folders in there now. I don't have time to go through all this right now. I'm going to have some work ahead of me sorting this all out. Holy shit.
>>
The 2007 Lethe package has 128kbps tracks in there while the ones in my library are (funny enough) 320kbps. So I got rid of that package. Just a heads up for the library you linked.
>>
What's weird is that I had another library in here that was labelled 2009 Lethe. Seems like some people are mixing up years. Exactly the same layout, names and quality. So there's a few different packages floating around.

Meanwhile the 'Various' library has those tracks already. So i'm not sure why they are being distributed like that.
>>
Anyway, sorry didn't mean to sound like I wasn't thankful for these. There's some great ones in here. I'm listening through them now.

Have fun finding your way around. Contrary to what most of /mu would have you believe, music appreciation is supposed to be an enjoyable experience.

Also, fwiw Grimes really doesn't make actually bad music. Which is to say, either a person likes pretty much everything she's ever done (with a handful of specific, powerful likes/dislikes along the way - of course) or you like none of it.* And since you already seem to like what you hear, you should have a lot more listening fun ahead of you.

* The explanation for why this is can get quite complex. If you go through her discography and critically analyze it, what you find is that she has a very idiosyncratic way of structuring the individual sound components that make up her music. Regardless of what particular chord progressions/song structures/instrumental/vocal sounds she happens to be using at the time, she always applies this same subtle "sonic texturing" pattern to her music. And if you happen to like the sound of that pattern (which it is fair to say you probably do if you like more than even just a handful of her songs, since everything else about her music changes drastically all the time.)
>>
continued from >>73107217

...you're bound to like any music you hear that has that same idiosyncratic feel to it - i.e. the rest of her discography.

Don't be fooled by that. Those 320kbps were surely transcodes, not the originals. The original files posted on her Myspace had 128kbps. I know that because I ripped them myself. They're identical with what was posted on Myspace.

Keep the 128 kbps version, it's the best available.

Lethe was issued in 2007 on Myspace. 2009 is the wrong year.

Listen randomly to her songs. Little by little you will be immersed into her world. Her music is a massive grower, be sure of that. Even songs that seems filler will soudns amazing once you get into them.
>>
>>73106982
Viceversa for me, except that I'd switch Visions and Art Angels, Visions being her best album.

I want all her pain to be forever redirected to me so she never can never feel it again.

You fuckers don't even discuss her music, only her image. This shows how she's musically uninteresting

did you even read the thread, you pathetic troll? btw, artist discussion is allowed too. get fucked.
>>
>>73113870
She is definitely musically interesting. She has an interesting yet peculiar character that I think draws people to her. She's intriguing. But she's also a good looking woman, so naturally that's going to inspire many people to lust for her simply on that basis (ie. that's how we're programmed... in fact all life is programmed this way).

But i'd argue there is much to her music and to her art that if you can see beneath the surface you come to understand there is much more than just a beautiful woman.

I think she'd be disappointed in her fanbase if we were strictly speaking about her image. That she could not reach us with her music, but she was instead relegated to a pretty young thing to ogle at.

grimes was discussed and over discussed for years. give it more time for these threads to recover. more exactly wait until she releases a new album to see a proper grimes thread.
