*mostly* shite that people think is really good simply because it has that exotic Japonais finish to it and for some reason people completely sperg out at that point and can't judge the art irrespective of that. There are people all over the world doing the same shit and yet no one cares.

I love me some japanese weird vision. It's different in a lot of ways yet I can't exactly wrap my head around what makes it weird other than "it's Japan". Here's a small list of my favorites. One album per artist but pretty much everything from them is fucking amazing. So here goes:
Kashiwa Daisuke - Program music (neoclassical with avant-garde-ish touches)
World's End Girlfriend - Hurtbreak Wonderland (post-rock, electronic, neoclassical)
X Japan - Art of Life (power\prog metal)
Rin Toshite Shigure - Inspiration is Dead (post-hardcore)
Sigh - Imaginary Soniscape (avant-garde black metal)
Boris - Flood (drone, sludge)
Mono\World's End Girlfriend - Palmless prayer/mass murder refrain (post-rock, neoclassical) Don't really dig Mono though, kinda generic, but split with WEG is phenomenal
Envy - A dead sinking story (screamo, post-hardcore)
Nujabes - Metaphorical Music (hip-hop, jazz, fusion)
Tricot - The (math-rock)

Also can put Intestine Baalism and Chirch of Misery on the list, both being from Japan, but they play rather western-esque melodic death metal and doom metal respectively. Still quite good.

Japan is the only asian country to produce any music of actual quality.
I got into Japanese music originally because i grew up watching anime and there are a lot of great anime soundtracks.
Eventually you start exploring non anime Japanese music.
Tat shit yellow magic orchestra made,, city pop, shibuya kei, j rock, jpop, folk, etc.

The Japanese have a great quality and diversity in the music they made.

And once you know that, you realize how garbage kpop and koreans really are.

This is why I hate that I can't mention Japanese bands to any of my "normie" friends or family without them thinking its some kind of hyperactive 90s bubblegum happy hardcore shit or something. Japanese music basically has something for everyone regardless of tastes due to how much the Japanese have adapted to western styles of music.

The obviously over the top saccharine nature of KKB is part of the appeal though I get that it's not for everyone. I like SnC but I feel like what they do is a bit different than KKB. There's definitely some similarities but I feel like the subject matter creates a big difference in how the songs play out. KKB songs are about making banal, everyday things seem more grand or full of life than they are. SnC songs are more about making pop songs from esoteric references to cinema, literature, history, etc.

I really really like the production in Malice Mizer and that aesthetic. It is difficult to find Larc on youtube and live performances generally are shitty. They have one really well done performance that involves some rabbit in the opening (don't remember the album name), try finding on piratebay.

Also give art of Life from X Japan a try.

The first from '78 is the quirkiest and essential if you like early electronic pop, BGM is a solid combination of all their styles, Technodelic is landmark /bleep/ ahead of its time, and Naughty Boys is just plain synth pop (still solid, of course).

If you like comedy, Multiplies and Service have sketch show type bits between the songs.
>>
>>73087024
Also, you might like to hear Public Pressure since it contains the best live versions of most of their best songs up 'til that point (1980), including a lot of Solid State Survivor. The album originally cut Kazumi Watanabe's guitar solos due to contractual issues so instead Sakamoto overdubbed new synth solos, which work really well (especially on Tong Poo) but if you want to hear the recordings in their original form, Faker Holic has all the songs and then some.

Hey OP, you should see if you can fish up a .pdf of Japrocksampler by Julian Cope. He's the same dude that wrote Krautrocksampler, but JRS is much more thoroughly researched and goes a long way in describing the kind of strange Westernization that Japanese rock bands represent. It has a good Top 50 list in the appendix too, which is a pretty decent starter set for 60's and 70's shit. http://rateyourmusic.com/list/RamonesIstKrieg/julian_copes_japrocksampler_top_50_albums/

I'm quite a fan of the melody though. This is quite nice though, I like poppy songs.

>>73088759
Oh yeah, I knew it was going to be something special, so I had to go. I made sure to take a lot of pictures and videos too. I got Silence be Alive signed by all the members and I got a picture with a few as well.

Sounds like you had a good time at least.

>>73088779
I know, Godzilla Legend played there only a month ago. Its been a very long time since they've come to my city though.

My favorite Japanese band at the moment is Arepos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xL-hwlOaD_U

That's Kazuto Shimizu from Chakra/Killing Time/Hikashu and Reichi from Unita Minima. They're married.

I forgot about this album until now. After Dinner was a cool band.

GOAT Japanese album comin thru
>>
>>73089146
I know a little bit about Perfume, but never got into them.
>>
>>73071137
was going to suggest Envy but I see you already have it there.
respect
also I'm checking this Rin Toshite Shigure and its pretty damn good. voice is high as hell and not in the Anthony Green way but I don't mind
>>
>>73087513
More like this? I love her voice. Any recommendation?
>>
Why does Japanese music have to be so expensive? My friend always gives me shit for how much I end up spending on a single CD.
>>
>>73089327
The exchange rate is part of it. Live shows are fucking expensive too. I've paid like $30 for a CD before.
>>
Anyone know where I can download a video of Shiina Ringo's Ringo Expo 08? I've been looking for ages, but no torrents have any seeds.
>>
>>73089381
And the fucking shipping is a killer. I just recently bought a whole bunch, spending about 35 aud a cd, and he just seemed disappointed at me for spending so much.

>>73089436
DVDs are usually a bitch to find, have you tried rutracker?
>>
>>73089456
rutracker has an audio rip, but not the video. I did snag Electric Mole at least, but I can't find Expo 08.
>>
dude Utada Hikaru
>>
>>73089215
They're really good. They're the full package, catchy songs, cool dance moves, and cool outfits.
>>
>>73089146
I don't listen to a ton of Perfume, but Polyrhythm and Fake It are incredible tracks. Also, Polyrhythm is on the Cars 2 soundtrack, weirdly enough.
>>
>>73089456
I usually just reserve purchases for shit I can't get any other way. I'm happy with what I've bought in the past but it's not something I want to do often.
>>
>>73089476
Yeah, I would try something like soulseek next, if not you might have to search extremely hard over websites or something. Worse comes to worse, you might be forced to buy it.

>>73089498
I might have to give them a listen to then.

>>73089556
Same, but the more I listen to music, the more I find that I can't find online, but I also try to support and buy from the artists I really love though.
>>
>>73089701
Thanks. I'll dig a bit more. The cheapest copy up on Discogs is $85 now, so I'm trying to avoid that if possible.
>>
>>73089732
Oh damn, I didn't realise it would be that much, lets hope you can find it then.

I could snatch one for you and take ages to re-upload somewhere or invite you and give you tons of bonus so you can snatch whatever yourself.

I'd appreciate that a lot. I haven't been on a private tracker since Waffles died ages ago.

I'm not on it but I browse >>>/g/ptg and hear pretty much everything about private trackers.
Kind of sucks that they missed their chance again, two new trackers basically took WCD's place as top music tracker.

It's a japanese music tracker, they track anything that is released in japan.
Even though I'm on AB and the top music trackers I still find stuff that is only on JPS.
>>
>>73090319
Er, well, I guess they track asian stuff.
Not /just/ japanese. rip
>>
>>73090282
I remember when they first popped up, actually. I've seen Redacted mentioned a few times on mu even. I've always been too lazy to shoot for an interview though.

Anyway, here's another Japanese album for the topic.

That does sound quite interesting, the rules seem a little harsh to me though. Would they happen to have Hi-Mick/No Prime? I've been trying to find a way I could get that album for the longest time now.
>>
>>73090391
I just checked. PAw Laboratory? It doesn't seem to be on there.

Yeah I'm gonna use this to proselytize a little about my favorite musician.

Haruomi Hosono was in the first band that ever made rock music with Japanese lyrics, and then shortly worked with Van Dyke Parks, made a whole bunch of really well-arranged exotica themed rock AND an album that put out a notably early rendition of acid house (in the late 70s).
All that, before bringing YMO together, which would go on to essentially create the chiptune genre and modern j-pop.
And then still going on to do a lot of seminal work in synthpop, ambient music (both at the same time) and then later noise and a lot of great crossover projects. Every thread in his career is worth following and he has produced more and influenced more musicians than almost any other late 20th century musician.

Check him out. I'll continue to lurk so ask for more reccs (based on what you're into now) if you're even a bit interested. Or just make fun of me for caring this much (it's no less than i deserve)

>>73075701
>>73085421
these because YMO is best.
>>
>>73088161
You don't need context to appreciate paintings, film and dance, why do you think context is necessary for music? It either sounds good or it doesn't. Cultures aren't equal, there are inferior ones and superior ones, music included. Should we hold an aboriginal playing the didgeridoo to the same standards as Radiohead? Because that's the argument you're making.

The following is a list of personal favourites. Completely subjective, of course.

Cruyff in the Bedroom (shoegaze/dreampop; best band I never see get mentioned in threads like these, pic related)

Off Course- Boku No Okurimono (folk rock; amazing vocal harmonies)

Tatsuro Yamashita- For You and/or Ride on Time (City Pop; unbelievable melodies, every track is gold)

Morita Doji- anything, really (folk; deeply depressing and emotional)

P-Model- In A Model House/Landsale (new wave/electropunk(?); Kraftwerk with energy, essentially. Lots of fun)

Susumu Hirasawa- fucking everything (eclectic electronic genius; always impressive)

Ryo Fukui- Scenery (jazz piano; talented motherfucker. Definitely worth checking out)

Hako Yamasaki- Tobimasu (folk again; kinda like Doji, but with a stronger voice)

QP-CRAZY- anything (fucking insane punk; frontman is Crazy SKB, pro wrestler and all around maniac)
>>
>>73090419
Aww, I found one anon once a while ago that owned the album and I asked for a link, but he never delivered. Any Susumu Hirasawa/P-Model DVDs? I would always love to see one of those.

>>73090464
I can can fully confirm P-Model and Susumu Hirasawa as amazing. I recently bought a vocaloid cover album with QP-Crazy, its meant to be coming in the mail soon.
>>
>>73090455
if by "same standards" you mean that we should talk about meaning, then yeah.

if you're comparing radiohead and aboriginal folk music and saying "this one is simpler because x y z" then you're obviously missing the point of both.
>>
Jagatara is underrated and fun as fuck. They sound something like Gang of Four with horns or a more unhinged Talking Heads.

>>73090464
Great list. I haven't listened to the first two, but the rest are great. Especially Morita Doji and Hako Yamasaki.

I can't believe this thread has went on for this long and I haven't memed Sai Yoshiko yet. Her first three albums are some of my favorite psychedelic folk releases ever. Particularly Taiji no Yume. This is the title track from Taiji no Yume and probably my favorite single track by her. Ignore the cover art though. The uploader has the cover art from her first album instead for some reason.
