Infinite Jest is the worst pick here. It's a good book, but I can't even see the argument for it being the artistic highpoint of literature. Highpoint of literature for that decade, maybe, but c'mon. There's no way for this to not sound condescending, but have you read much classic literature?

I mean if it's your FAVORITE book that's a separate discussion and seems perfectly reasonable to me, but if you really think that's the artistic high point of the entire medium I don't really know what to say.

or maybe its not a contest of who can be deeper than another rather than just convey ideas and moods through images and sound. I love jodo but im not gonna diss lynch, his movies are fun in a quentin tarantino kinda way. They might be to focused around characters and dialogue for my taste and overuse some kinds of shots but they throw in oddball humor and mindfuckery/twists enough to make it a fun movie at least for the first time you watch it. i mean just try watching something or listening without letting pretense ruin any chance of enjoyment, take it in and appreciate it for what it is.

I don't think it's that fair to assume any nefarious intent or inauthenticity in people's choice of Lynch. There's high chance he's just the extent to which many people have explored film, rather than it being a boast about how cultured they are -- maybe it literally IS just how cultured they are.

I also think it's possible to genuinely hold him to great heights despite deeper interest in film anyway. Also remember Twin Peaks has recently restarted, so he might be fresh in the minds of people thinking about directors and responding to the choice of great cinema

Bioshock is the video game equivalent of Dream Theater

The artstyle is literally the only thing it has going for it. From an actual gameplay perspective it's an unbalanced clusterfuck with subpar level design, half the plot is ripped wholesale from System Shock and the other half is a nonsensical mess.

Everyone sucks its dick because of its """thought-provoking morality""" or whatever but the whole message behind Rapture is just "ayn rand is bad" and it's about as subtle as a brick to the head. And the moral choices that everyone loves are literally whether you want to murder a little girl with your bare hands or not. There's not even any benefit to doing it, you can save all of them and have more than enough to buy the superpowers

Fuck I hate Bioshock. It would have been okay on its own but ever since that game came out it's like everybody is suddenly convinced that the same mass-market triple-A schlock like this or Mass Effect or Elder Scrolls are suddenly Serious Thought Provoking Works Of Art because they have all the moral ambiguity and subtext of a middle schooler's deviantart fanfic. What nonsense

it will never happen. film had established itself as a serious artform by 1916 with Griffith's Intolerance. gaming has yet to produce a serious work of art in the 4 decades of its existence. "art game" usually designates something with heavyhanded 'artsy' symbolism and metaphors in the form of filmic tropes

There are twenty-three games there right now and maybe four actually make sense.
>Another World
>Dwarf Fortress
>Portal
>EVE
Of those four only Portal and Another World had any notable cultural impact or influence. For the rest it's like they just took games that were popular enough that video game nerds would be impressed but would be obscure and interesting to everyone else.
Not to mention MoMA's exhibit does little to actually examine and make a case for why each one is actually included and what it did to advance the medium as an art form. It proves nothing.

>Plus it actually plays well unlike MGS3
MGS3 is literally the best game in the franchise from an actual gameplay perspective except maybe Phantom Pain. That's the only thing it does better than MGS2
>>
>>73069236
MGS3's gameplay is more based around choice than MGS2, but it's also fraught with more difficulty. The menu meme is an old one, but the bigger difficulty is the inconsistent sight of the guards in these open landscapes compared to MGS2's better designed, focused layouts in the Big Shell.

I also think MGS3 has a lot of bad bosses compared to MGS2 which is consistent boss/gameplay-wise.

And of course, conceptually speaking, MGS3 is for toddlers.
