I really liked Utada Hikaru's early stuff like First Love and Distance, but I heard This is The One and absolutely hated it. Her lyrics were much better when I couldn't understand them. And now her newer stuff is too bland for me. She lost the edge she had on all those early bangers. I haven't listened to Fantome, but I've heard its pretty good, and I am inclined to believe that.

i made the mistake of assuming it was bad and never even giving stuff a chance. let me just saying you are doing yourself a disservice. jpop and kpop is usually pretty out there and crazy despite its super commercial image just because their culture is out ther and crazy. stuff wilder than stuff that gets called "Art pop" here like bjork or kate bush is chart topping stuff there.
ive been a serious music listener for a long time and knew basically all major and minor western popular music movements and genres, traditional musical systems of 100s of unique cultures around the globe, the insides and outs of western art music canon, court and spiritual musics of non western cultures, and an awareness of how western musical codes and artifacts intersect and wrap with nonwestern codes. but i never listened to kpop or jpop because "muh waifufags XD. weeboo losers haha" when in fact its one of the pinnacles of sonic and cultural achievement of the modern world.
