In the 70's the Beatles were not the scred cow they are today. Sure they were still considered great but their true musical influence was not yet known. Like in 1973 when Led Zep was breaking all of the Beatles concert attendance records it was being speculated that Led Zep might be the next "Beatles". I don't recall anyone referring to "A Day in the Life" when Mr Blue Sky was single being played on the radio.
