I never went through a specifically metalcore phase, I've always listened to a good variety of music, but I was a pretty big fan of As I Lay Dying a few years back

It was easy to have a metalcore phase in high school when you went to high school when metalcore was peaking.
After that fad died, half of the local venues went out of business because they almost exclusively booked bands in that scene.

I'm 32 now. I never got into metalcore; I disliked it almost immediately.

As far as people who think metal is something to grow out of, they're too worried about being popular. They look at /mu/core charts and let that dictate what they do and do not enjoy. Not that they enjoyed that shit to begin with.

I don't know honestly. I eventually became a big fan of both of those artists as well as harsh noise and power electronics in general but to be honest, I really didn't enjoy that particular show and I was on the verge of throwing up during much of it(especially during the Prurient performance).
I didn't actually know anything about either Prurient or HP before that show and the harshest music I hard heard until that point was probably something like Darkthrone or Napalm Death so suffering through a 20-minute set of Dominick Fernow brutalizing a wall of amplifiers and a couple of microphones was a bit too much to handle. Hair Police were a bit less difficult to get into since they actually had a lineup and a sound which resembled a rock band and was a bit easier to follow, but it would still be a couple of years before I properly "got into" either of those bands.
