What the hell were these guys so angry about? This album came out in 1994, during that whole 90's prosperity/"Cool Brittania" thing. They should have been euphoric. In retrospect, it feels incredibly self-indulgent. If you were a mopey loser in '94 of all years, then what was even the point of you?
you sound like a drone. just because the media is selling you happy music, it doesn't mean you have to shut your eyes and be happy

Some periods of time are objectively more prosperous and jubilant than others. The 1990's in the UK was one of the most peaceful, hopeful, and prosperous times ever enjoyed by any large group of humans EVER.
Wartime (WWI or WWII; take your pick) British music is not nearly THIS depressed. And those were people who had REAL problems to deal with.

Because anger is a good tool to create music, hence why this album is so amazing.

Blackwood was a shit place in the 80s/90s. Also; I don't think Rickey could feel anything other than anger and disgust.

what you are saying is that you think counter cultural art is indulgent because it doesn't conform to mainstream norms or attitudes. really think about that opinion for a second, because it's fucking terrible
if 1994 was such a gilded year for us then British musicians had a fucking artistic duty to point to the darker shades of life at the time.

the guitarist and bassist who wrote all the lyrics were/are repressed transgenders so they were pretty bummed about it. the other two were just edgy dudes.

>Richey Edwards had had long-term problems with alcohol abuse, depression and self-harm. During 1994, these problems had, according to Wire, "escalated to a point where everybody got a bit frightened" and Edwards had also begun to suffer from anorexia nervosa.
>His problems continued and, during the recording of the album, his mental state deteriorated after learning of the suicide of a close friend from university.
>The album's lyrics deal with subjects including prostitution, American consumerism, British imperialism, freedom of speech, the Holocaust, self-starvation, serial killers, the death penalty, political revolution, childhood, fascism and suicide.[18] According to Q: "the tone of the album is by turns bleak, angry and resigned".
