Because it's seen as a sellout song by an infinitely more talented band (Jefferson Airplane). I think it's pretty catchy, don't really get the hate.

I don't like this song much, but I've accepted that I'll never understand these "worst song ever" consensus opinions because I didn't live through the 80s. I'll take their word for it, it probably feels like how I feel when that stupid "rockabye" song comes on on the radio.
