What's the difference? I'm asking because I'd really like to find some more aggressive heavier dark wave bands like Samhain, but I've had zero luck so far.

Deathrock is more punky while Goth rock is somber and atmospheric
Deathrock is harder and much heavier on the punk/hardcore influence. Samhain is deathrock(and they also had a pretty unique sound going on, so I'm not sure you're gonna have much luck finding more stuff that sounds like them; I always thought it was a shame Glenn and company didn't put out at least one more proper Samhain album before moving onto the more straightforward and muscular metal sound of Danzig).
Gothic rock is less aggressive and more cerebral. The Cure's Pornography is goth rock, as is the first Sisters Of Mercy album.

Cool, thanks for the replies. Yeah I'm in pain right now, I'm in love w/ Unholy Passion, November Coming Fire, and even Final Descent to an extent. Sucks that no one else has really explored such a sound.

what do you think of their best though?

Not the people above, but I recommend the lo-fi goth bands like Blessure Grave and Grave Babies, who were basically offshoots of deathrock.
A way to think of it is, almost all deathrock is goth, but deathrock is a very small category within goth. Nowadays, it seems to distinguish the goth bands that are more guitar oriented and stripped down - i.e. not overproduced post-punk, or electronic/atmospheric "darkwave"
The only deathrock bands that I can think of that aren't also goth are a few punk bands with interests in gothic lit or the macabre, like Rudimentary Peni.
It's also worth noting that some bands that were part of the original deathrock scene are no longer considered deathrock because they do other things, like The Gun Club and The Flesh Eaters (punk blues), and X.
The other thing to note is that the batcave bands like Alien Sex Fiend and Specimen have been labeled deathrock retroactively, but they were considered separate in their own time.
I like Dadrock more than Godrock desu

Oh, and I forgot to recommend Anasazi

Kinda underdeveloped, not as fully realized as their later work, and is their most generic imho. He who cannot be named, Macabre, All Murder, Horror Biz, Archangel, Samhain, Black Dream are all still amazing though.
I just love how tribal Unholy Passion is with Zing's drumming, the weird chimes, etc.
November Coming Fire from front to back is just perfect for me in every aspect.
Final Descent (2000) is amazing imo also as I love Danzig and since the first half was recorded in his prime. Also Lords of the Left Hand (2nd Version) is my favorite Samhain song; never heard anything remotely like it.
NCF > UP > FD > Initium
all are over an 8/10 though

You might like early TSOL and Lords of the New Church

Thanks a lot, definitely will check out

Not the OP, but I always thought this album was ruined by the production. A song like Archangel should explode out of your speakers, but instead it just sort of plods along. Too weedy and flat.

You into Raspberry Bulbs at all? Modern hardcore/deathrock courtesy of one of the Bone Awl guys.
By far the best band playing this sort of music nowadays IMO.
