Ok, today bought pic related (Ibanez V70CE electro-acoustic guitar as my first guitar ever). Now the question is, should I start learning from justinguitar.com or the wiser choice would be Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar Bonus Workshops (by Steve Krenz)? Nevertheless I'm going to take several private lessons with professional musician to learn how to hold/play guitar properly.

I mean, it's got old pickups and even older hardware. The only new things about it are the body shape and the neck joint. It would look better with a more modern headstock design. And would it kill them to fit a trem? Would it be such a climbdown to develop a single coil pickup?

>>
>>73005411
Start writing songs

The only way to actually learn guitar and its intricasies is to start writing some songs dude
>>
>>73005455
You file with a file. You sand with sand or other abrasive particles.
>>
>>73005370
Gibson has been out of the loop since decades now.
It's not even a particularily complex fix, since they do that even on the cheapo chink Deans.

>>73005455
what did you even expect ?

>>73005482
I'm three years in and I'm a decent/good player, and I've never written any song.
You get good at playing by practicing.
Writing songs is only gonna make you better at writing songs.

>>
>>73005482
I don't really like making my own music because I have very poor imagination. I sometimes just mess around and make some simple chord progressions when practicing but that's about it.
I just mostly try to play technical stuff from artists that I like.

>You get good at playing by practicing.
>Writing songs is only gonna make you better at writing songs.

So, to you, the only point of playing is to "get good". Not to make music or express anything. Just getting good so you can tell everyone how good you are.
>>
>>73005499
yeah, that

>>73005519
For it to buzz less and have a flat but survivable non-crown
>>
>>73005942
I don't have emotions to express and am in general not a musical person. I like to 'get good' so I can play for myself and hopefully get some joy from it. My guitar is the only thing in life that I have.

>>
>>73006411
Arm angle will change. Even switching from left knee to right requires slight alterations to technique. Also, fret access can be facilitated or inhibited. If you're going to perform standing then stand.
>>
>>73006496
Don't buy a guitar just because of the color. Affinity squiers suck.
>>
>>73006557
It doesnt have to be premium level Gibson (hahaha gibson quality hahaha) but long lasting as far as the build of the wood components
>>
>>73006706
squier affinity are quite literally the worst build quality and worst materials imaginable, they are kids toys

save your money until you can afford at the very least a Squier Vintage Modified and ideally a Classic Vibe, the entire Affinity range isn't worth the money
>>
>>73006411
One thing you have to be aware of is if you play over your right leg while seated, your neck will be at a totally different angle when standing. But even if you play over the left leg with a strap while sitting there will still be a slight difference, but then it's only noticeable on really hard parts. Practice standing if you're going to be performing standing

Learn as many standards as you possibly can- get your tone crisp as shit. Learn as many scales/modes as you possibly can, practice your improvisation off of those scales. Familiarize yourself as well as possible with every "conventional" chord you can think of and start improvising with chords.

Finally, apply said techniques to the standards you've learned and start improvising around them. After a decade of this, start playing bar gigs while some savant virtuosio rips harder than you could ever imagine- translate your jealous rage into motivation to work harder. It's really something that you have to treat like a sport you're constantly training for.

>after you become famous get yourself killed by a bouncer at a shitty bar and go down in history as one of the greats

I came out of a family that only listened to radio sewage. I told my music instructor at school when I was 8 that I really wanted to play guitar. He found a horrible amp and guitar someone he knew had in a basement. Seriously, he took my lunch money for 2 weeks and gave me a peanut butter sandwich and a cup of water. At the end he gave me a method book that was in the same series as the ones we were using in class. He taught me posture and I was on my own after that, having to rekate what we learned in class to my book at home. At 12 I had him for jazz band and he put me on guitar, and beat me down til I stepped up to the plate. He convinced the school to get an es335 and I played it til high school. My junior and senior year i got out of my last 2 classes to be his TA and I tutored 7 different guitarists and 10 different bassists. Dude didn't know shit about guitar, but he knew theory and how to motivate. I almost went to college to be a music instructor, obviously not for the money but because of the positive effect this dude had on so many people's lives.

He kept it lowkey, but he bought an alto sax for one student cause the kid was so passionate. The kid was moving out of state to a city who's district had no music program and the kid wanted to keep playing. We were behind in timezones and this kid would call every tuesday after our last hour class let out to talk to us, see how we were doing and to keep us up on his progress. Teach would take the call collect on the school's dime. He would justify it as "this program exists for education, growth and betterment....is that not what this phonecall is about?"

All it takes is one man. If you never had someone like that, be that to someone else.

It taught me that you have to do without to be a musician. It didn't hit til later when I was trying to make money from guitar. I could always afford the bare minimum, but never more. Main reason I didn't pursue it as a career much after I hit my 20s. I still keep up with him, he said he would have gave the money back but an 8 year old with 12 bucks can get into trouble.

Yeah it's a good lesson, still you were 8 haha. I'm kind of in the same boat but I could never make a living playing the music I love anyways. Almost everyone I know in my style of music has a day job, it's crazy when you meet some of the most well known musicians in your genre to find out they work as Trash men during the day.

I've thought about giving free lessons and acquiring affordable instruments for poor kids just so I can pass on my legacy. Just posting ads on craigslist would make me look like a pedo though....Maybe I should volunteer somewhere

Income is based off work, work is based off opportunity, opportunity is based off availability, and at the end it's all based off competition. If i make 10 grand in 2 weeks it aint shit if I can't break $200 a week in the next 4. It hit me when I was seriously considering running coke for a drummer I played with every so often to make ends meet. I make more now than I was making with music, and even though it's much more work that's much less rewarding I have security I never had before. I would still like to teach music, but if I pursued it I'd have a ton of debt. I am thinking about voluntering at a community center though.

It's the age I started to learn a lot of things, actually. I get you, 2 of the more well known hardcore bands from the 80s come from my state; one of their singers taught 6th grade and retired early, the other flips burgers. They both still perform 3 times a year at least(even though one dude is pushing 60). I've been there for shows with 50 and 2000, and they're in it like it's the most important show of their lives. Most I've made playing the music I like is $600 across a 5 person band. The music you like is a labor of love, the rest is you doing your best to excercise your craft. I love music, I love playing music, all types. I do it cause it's what I know, every style is a different idea. It's not even about playing what I like, it's about being able to mesh with other people and pull it off while sounding good. I signed up for this benefit concert where musicians get thrown in a pool and you have to play a hit song from this decade and the 70s, we played bruno mars and michael jackson, it was a blast and people were in to it because of the performance. We all ripped solos during rock with you while the singer talked mad shit to the crowd. The first key player and I went back and forth between eachother in this call and response improv thing for 32 bars, one of my best moments.

>>73012767
It's all good. If you can't hit celebrity or cult status you're limited to getting paid to play for different acts. I went 2 months with making less than 2 grand and rent was $800 a month.

I live in abject poverty so I can't afford any of that. I'm 23 with $800 to my name after years of struggling through debt and irresponsible mistakes (because no parenting).

I built that guitar myself out of old guitar parts I bought off ebay for pennies and I refinished and painted it all with a can of spray paint and gloss. I bought the amp from a craigslist fellow for $60 and the EMG pickups I had to painfully shell out the $200 for. Anyway, it sounds old school as fuck and all I do is write Bathory inspired riffs.

When I first picked up bass it was amazing and the most fun I've had on an instrument ever

However in the time since I've also regained interest in guitar and like both equally for different things

-The feel of new bass strings is superior to new strings on guitar
-bass techniques work on both, but slapping seems slightly more satisfying on bass, popping good on both
-distortion is a million times better on guitar, on bass it sounds fucking terrible particularly on low strings
-most effects in general work better on guitar IMHO

Friendly reminder, absolutely nothing of value has ever been posted in /gg/. Ever. Not even once.

Ask yourself who you're talking to in these threads, who's posting these idiotic/uninformed opinions/ideas. The only answer any reasonably intelligent person would be able to come to is
>abject failures who don't have anywhere else better to be and nothing else better to do with their time
Ask yourself why you're interacting with these people at all, what are you hoping to accomplish? Are you aiming for the same status? No? Why are you here then? Are you just fucking retarded? Short answer: yes.

Here's a hint, you imbeciles: there are no professional musicians giving away their trade secrets on social media. None. If you're posting in these threads the best you could ever hope for is wasting your time like all the other useless hobbyists who play guitar do. What could a hobbyist possibly have to offer you? What do you think you have to gain posting here? Are you actually trying to accomplish something or are you just another sad loser looking for a temporary escape from your miserable, pointless life? You want to do this for real or not?

Wait, you say you don't want to be a professional musician? You don't want to do this for a living? You're just doing it for fun? lol, playing guitar all alone by yourself is a bullshit hobby for out of touch manchildren, the world doesn't need another brain-dead bedroom warrior who won't admit to his illusions of grandeur. All your doing is frivolously, futilely, and furiously jacking your tiny dicks to avoid the realities of your pathetic lives.

Yes, it's bad. The interface has a preamp that can handle the output from pickups. The line in is 100% clipping parts of the signal and probably destoying any low end frequencies. It's the equivalent of using you're phone camera to record the radio vs downloading FLAC quality music from the internet. You can get a Scarlett solo or 2i2 for like 100 - 120 bucks and vastly improve your sound.

At what point do you start "getting" music theory? Like, I've done Justin's beginner course, but still. I'm only familiar with bass notes and the note circle at this point.

How do I even know what key a song is in? How many chords are there "left" to learn once I know stuff like A, C, D, G and F? Because when I try to play some melody I've heard somewhere, I never feel that the chords I've learned now can express the song.

Anyone remember how it was to be a confused newbie? When does it "click"? Do I need to start learning "movable" chords (bar?) before I can transcribe different songs?

Just look for an acoustic player with millions of hits on YT and do whatever songs they're doing:

>just copy someone else who appears to be popular
>don't think for yourself whatever you do
>just copy
>don't try a different arrangement
>don't do any less well known songs that you really like and people might enjoy hearing for the first time
>just do what everyone else does
>just be a copy of someone else
>don't think for yourself, that would be very bad indeed

ideally look for a used MIM strat, will cost about the same as a new classic vibe or vintage modified. Friend owns Classic Vibe P bass and Duo Sonic and they sound great for the price but the MIM holds value better and is worth upgrading (more so than the squiers).

Does anybody feel like they don't actively know songs, but just play by muscle memory? I know decent music theory, and I know why the notes follow each other, but even simple songs at like 60 bpm are hard for me to just play after a few minutes. I know how to play a lot of fast complex metal songs, but it still takes me months to learn new songs, even ones as simple as Wonderwall

I'm not telling him to wear a low cut top and jiggle his pecs like Jess Greenberg...

He wants a set list but is too lazy to create his own. I narrowed down his options for a set list. What the fuck does your post have to do with picking out songs that are popular for a set list?

Just picked up guitar yesterday, having a hard time not properly fingering strings. Half of the time at least 1 isn't actually strumming. I guess it's a problem with other fingers hitting that string but I can't really tell. Any tips? So far I've learned the A, D, and E chords.
>>
>>73003857
Lads i want to to tune to drop c but it seems i can only get to d before it sounds like shit, but i think my tuner is wrong since it goes from d to a, im using 10 gauges by the way.
>>
>>73022316
Yea. Im just fucking arounf with a mildy flamed plank of wood. I need to source some 5mm thick maple from somewhere. And some ash would be nice in a light black stain.
>>
>>73022430
try tuning with harmonics
thats how i manage to tune the b string on my bass
>>
>>73022421
Yes your fat fingers are muffling the other string. Either that or your not fretting hard enough. Try angling your limp wrist a little more so your fingers come down on the neck more vertically.
>>
Played guitar last night for the first time in a year
it comes back to you pretty fast, I was relieved
/blog
>>
>>73022421
It comes down to finger strength and muscle memory. Just keep practicing changing between chords. You'll get there.
>>
>>73022504
>>73022554
Alright, thanks guys i'll keep at it.
>>
>>73021847
Staining is easy street if you pick the right product. Dyeing and sanding is a little trickier. And Working with different finishes has degrees of difficulty.

I'd think making the pattern for the router would be the hardest part about making a pickguard. Getting or making wood that's wide and flat enough might be interesting. Honestly ply will already have a veneer and will give you a different look on the outer band.

Yeah im doing the light stain followed by steel wool sanding . first i prepped the wood with 120 grain. Then 220. Then first stain. Then 220 to remove. Then second layer. Then steel wool used to sand from there on out. Im also using denatured alcohol to raise grain before i sand. Then i finish with a quick polyurethane spray . about 3 coats with 2 sandings

Anyone messed around with an Epiphone Thunderbird pro or classic? If so, what is your opinion of them?

Also, best bass amps to look at that have decent gain for around $300?
>>
>>73022925
Right on. Stain won't dive in as much as dye, but it all just depends. I do mostly boxes and not a lot of contoured tops, so the orbital sander is vital. To hell with rubbing everything down by hand. Grab the handplane if it's that bad, then just random orbit it out.

Why do you use alc to raise? Sounds like you're geared up. I'd post projects here but screw this cancer doxxing board.

That black burst and natural.

Get a portaflex and pedal front it.
>>
>>73023408
Do you recommend dye for figured wood? Like curly and quilted maple? And idk why i use the alcohol i bought it when i bought the stain only to find out i can use it with it. So i just use the alcohol any way i can to justify the purchase.

What's a solid pedal pairing to stack with my dod 250?
>>
>>73023524
Your options for making tricked out guitars are get really good with dye or get really good with paint. To get that figuring you need depth and stain generally likes to hang out on the surface.

I use denatured alc to cut shellac and sometimes for cleaning. You can use it with dyes. It comes up useful here and there and is one of a few solvents worthwhile to just have on hand.
