new wave trap is extremely hard to pull off and ive yet to see someone on /mu/ even get close to getting that eestbound or boi1da sound, but then again, its not a very sound design intensive genre other than keeping an eye on your levels. it has more soul in a way that you have to know where to put all the drums and still having that headbob.

Ah fuck it, 4/4 techno is pretty braindead compared to trap and ill prove it to anyone other than people that like analog gear. Really the only reason you are supposed to make dat deep white label techno berghain bla bla bla is if you are into analog knob twiddling.

All the bullshit aside, every genre has different levels of "good music", its easy to make a half-assed rendition of almost any genre and tick the boxes. If you really want it to sound good then you need to have a decent set of ears and a good creative drive; and know the genre.
>>
>>73002199

This is really why I don't get genre bashing. It just shows insecurities and if you're actually working in a professional setting you're going to have to deal with all sorts of different people with different tastes.

Take any professional trap producer and they'd probably run circles around any EDM producer itt.
>>
>>73002199
All the bullshit aside. Trap is a very restrictive genre. If you wanna sound good you have to have dem good samples that are approved by the masses and have that xanned and leaned out fire with diamonds in the track. Every small detail can make the whole beat that you thought bumped sound like shit. In trap theres fire and theres straight trash, nothing inbetween, and only a few handful of producers have that mojo. Even beats that sound so simple cant even be fathomed how much removing and putting back drums there was during the process. Maybe i just drank too much coffee again but knowing trap as a genre takes obsessive dedication, because rappers are divas. And if you think this is subjective, think again, or better yet, ask someone that makes trap "How did you make this banger" and the answer is usually "I dont know, it just became like this" which is an oddly experimental (sort to say) answer to the question. Trap is weird and i think everyone should dip their hand into it once.

TL;DR trap is very specific and no one knows why.
>>
>>73002226
Exactly. I wish more people on /mu/ understood that, especially patricians with dubstep and what they call "brostep".

I figure having an output module is is a piss in the ocean if you are spending money on any kind of module setup. You can pick them up for around £100 so it's a no brainier for me. I'm guessing an standard 3u setup will be way over £1000 when full so it's probably worth getting one? You could just run the output of the last device in the chain to your audio interface or like you said send it to a stereo module.
An output module with a headphone jack will be my next purchase for my modular. Also if you are half decent with a soldering iron you can pick up a Befaco output module for £50

Men are hardwired to like technical things, while women are hardwired to like social things.

Obviously it's not a black and white distinction, but more like tendencies, so it's rare to find women naturally interested in technical things, just like it's rare to find men naturally interested in social things.

That's why female musicians are usually singers or instrument players, because they usually have no interest in sitting in front of a computer being autistic about the phase of a kick for two hours and shit like that.

>>
>>73005119

men can only relate to idem and insane guitarshred, right?
>>
>>73005158
Did you even read my post?

Are you trying to misunderstand everything on purpose?
Because I specifically said that it's not a black and white thing, and it's more of a tendency thing (meaning that the number of men that like technical things is higher than that of women who like them, not that it's 100%).

Of course there are technically-inclined women, and there are men who aren't technical at all.

>>
>>73005227
you dont need to be some obsessive turbosperg to be a producer just dl some vengeance drumkicks and some prebuilt pads by native instruments and you're good to go
>>
>>73005347
We're talking about how things appeal to men and women.
If you're not technically inclined and had to choose between playing guitar while singing, and staying in front of a computer, you're definitely going to like the first the most.

And even if you produce the simplest shit ever, just knowing your way around the DAW is far more technical than being a normal musician.
And non-producers don't really know that. Some think it's super hard and nerdy, and some think it's super-easy because the computer does everything for you, and when they start, they quickly find that it's actually more difficult to make something that sound decent, and if they're technically inclined they start grinding to get better, and if they're not, they give up.
>>
>>73003911

Doing what?
Certainly not technical things usually, unless they're the rare case in which they like it or they do it despite not liking it (for example at work).

>picking up the guitar which is arguably a lot more technical than slapping some tropical loops together and putting it to a stock 808 conga beat
Difficult =/= Technical
Just because something has more complexity it doesn't mean it's more technical.
I remember watching a documentary a few years ago about this (it was just a part of a larger documentary that I haven't watched the rest of).
It's about the nature vs nurture argument of boys and girls being interested in their respective fields, and at one point they went to some researchers who showed that even newborns had a significant difference in which things captured their attention the longest. Girls liked to look more at human faces while boys liked to look more at robots (or something similar, don't remember exactly).
There wera also numerous other arguments that showed that boys were more interested in things with complex inner workings and girls were more interested in things that had to do with communication and interactions between people.

If anyone knows what documentary I'm talking about it would be very helpful.

Uhhh, what?
>>
>>73005989
This depends on what you already know, how dedicated you are (meaning how many hours you're going to put in it), your mindset, the people who surround you, etc.

There are multiple classically trained musicians (or any kind of non-electronic musicians) who already knew a lot about the "music" side of music production, so they only had to learn the "production" side, and got to a pro level in a year or even less.

There are people who didn't know anything before starting, and got mentored by someone who was already good, so they got to pro level in months.

There are people who got good in the same amount of time by doing things on their own for a number of reasons.

But chances are, you don't have any of these advantages, so you either grind A LOT, or you try to get someone very good to teach you everything.

The closest thing that comes to mind is Syntorial, which will teach you how to use a synth.
To learn Ableton just watch Sadowick's course:

If you're even more braindead and lazy and want it even easier, start here:

how to make trap music using ableton ?
>>
>>73006668
Learn to use Ableton and once you're good enough to turn your ideas into actual music, make trap.

Alternatively, buy/pirate trap kits and loops, so you put together the premade samples and can have trap songs to all yours (even if they're not).

Then practice by recreating songs you like.
It's a really good excersize that makes you experience everything that went into creating it.
Think of it like an advanced deep analysis of the song, so you can know exactly what makes it the way it is.
Then see the difference between your music and those songs that you've analyzed, and work on every single aspect of it until it's as good as those songs you think are good.

Do this a few times and you'll be much better than before.

How do you go about adding a "sub melody" to a track that already has a sampled melody? I don't even know where to start. Do you need to use the exact scale the sample is in?
>>
>>73006960
the sub bassline has to play the bass notes of the chords or whatever is going on.

Where did I say use Ableton's default sounds?
I personally never even installed the packs (only the device presets and the piano, which I only use when I'm too lazy to load up Kontakt).

Obviously, unless you're Getyoursnackon your end result won't sound exactly like the original, but you can get pretty close depending on your skills, and in doing so you can gain a deeper understanding of how the song came to be.

Also, arrangement and musicality (the midi shit so to speak) are more important than you might think when it comes to getting a "sound" or genre right.

I have a cheaper one and a more expensive one. One at work and one in my garage.
It's not about the number of inputs. If that was it then I'd more than make do with just one of them. It's about ease of use. I don't want to have to take it with me whenever I need it.

Nobody uses Ableton's default sounds dude. Certainly not the pros.

For real instruments get Kontakt libraries (or if you're gay get Nexus).

For synth sounds get Serum (it's an all-around good synth, but depending on the sounds you want to make there might be other ones more appropriate).

For various samples get Splice packs by famous producers, and check out the Converse Rubber Tracks Sample Library (a pain in the ass to download but they're worth it, and are also free).

How can you not know about those plugins?
They're some of the most popular ones.

How long have you been producing?

For the record, Serum is a good synth, but I suggest starting with something simpler, like Sylenth1 (get Syntorial and do the exercises, and you'll become a bomb with it) and maybe Massive (strongly suggest reading Massive's manual, as it teaches you a lot).
Kontakt is a popular sampler, for which there are entire companies dedicated to make libraries.
They are top quality and easy to use.

If
>>
>>73007362
But they do.
Maybe not the ultra-technical producers, but many popular ones are famous for using presets.
Even Daft Punk used an unchanged Gross Beat preset for Derezzed.

If you're being sarcastic, Using presets is different than using Ableton's default sounds, simply because Ableton's sounds suck.

I'm talking about default samples and presets in Ableton's library, which are subar compared to third party stuff, and are rarely used compared to third party presets and samples.

I'm not talking about Ableton's native devices, which are mostly used with custom settings.

If you're trying to use the VSTi for its presets, you can try Serum, Sylenth1, Diva, and Zebra.

What I mean is that the use of Ableton devices is popular, while the use of their presets is not, because they're largely considered to not be very good compared to third party stuff.

I played one of these around the time when it came out. Superficially it was pretty fun to jam on. Some of the sounds were big but others were like clicky 70s drum machines. I usually prefer samples to drum machines in all honesty.
>>
>>73009635
samples are too static sounding though
>>
>>73009999
Not him but there are ways to make them less static.
If they're atonal you can slightly randomize the note they play at, or you can put an eq with a freerunning LFO, or you can add different FX to them and make multiple versions from the same sample so you can alternate between them.

Of course that applies if you only have a single sample to work with.
If you're using decent sample libraries they'll have multiple samples for each note to make them sound different each time.

>i think you're oversimplifying it with that first sentence but there's probably some truth to what you're saying... the sexism argument about how women would be "discouraged" socially doesn't really make sense considering you can produce in isolation without having their face attached to anything...
The documentary I talk about here [>>73005926] Is precisely about that argument, and they come to the conclusion that it's both genetic and societal (which I think happens because the genetic part in the first place).
As I said throughout the thread, it's not "all men like X and not Y, and the opposite applies to women".
It's more that a more or less higher percentage of men like X and a more or less higher percentage of women like Y.

Obviously if you only read the first sentence you're going to get a completely unnuanced black and white argument, which is not what I made here.

Another skin if this is more anyone's aesthetic.

Daichi mentioned wanting to add skinning capabilities to Synth1, can't wait to see what people make for it.

Is the nektar impact lx88+ a good keyboard for MIDI and learning the piano? its semi weighted. its the best i could find for 300 (cnat spend more) but i wonder if its worth it.. thank you

What do you guys think about the TAL-Sampler? Thinking about getting it, cheap, easy to use and make a great vintage sampled sound that you get in old dance and hip-hop records
>>
>>73013667

I like it mate, bit simple but could work as an interlude or something. Sounds BoC-ish, if that's what you were going for.
>>
>>73013304

When it doubt, remember the most popular synths of all time are Roland D-50, Yamaha DX7 and Korg M1. A huge amount of electronic music use these synths
>>
>>73018737
Pretty neat, lots of samples that come with it, but the CPU usage was higher than Kontakt IIRC. The vintage sampled sound is just going to come from the samples though, the slight crunch it adds from the resampler is hardly worth the price, just put a bit crusher set to 12 bits on a normal sampler with some retro samples, maybe resample those samples to 32kHz. Pirate it, if you use it more than a week then buy it imo.

I uploaded the wav of the 1st song on clyp.it but the compression made it sound like shit for some reason, so I reuploaded it in mp3 on MEGA, and for the second song I skipped clyp.it altogether.
If you make music you know how important it is for your music to be listened to properly, so that people listen to the actual song how you made it, and not a shitty version of it.
>>
>>73017623
The waveform in the video is just a effect like the other guy said, and it's not a waveform but a spectrum visualizer like vid related:

It's not a WIP, it's just an old song I posted for that one Anon I was having a conversation with.
If someone else wants to listen and maybe give me some feedback that's a plus.

I used to make the mistake of downloading songs with 128 kbps conversion, they all make a background sound like food getting fried.
192 kbps should be a decent option.

Assuming you're the Logic guy from yesterday, I take it you're on Mac, right?
I'm not sure how it works, as I've only used Windows.

Do other plugins show up or it's just these two?

>I couldn't even find the .exe setup for Serum.
What do you mean?

When you install a plugin, the installer puts a .dll file in a plugin folder (and sometimes puts other files elsewhere too, that the plugin will use in order to run).
Ableton has to read those .dll files (or a shortcut to them).

Here's a plugin that you don't have to install:
http://ag-works.net/media/Sonogram_SG1.zip
Just move the .dll file in the folder you set ("C:\Users\vival\Music\PLUGINS"), and click rescan to see if it appears.

You don't open it.
It just stays there, so that Ableton can read it and put it in the list of available plugins.

You then access the plugins from the "Plug-Ins" menu inside Ableton (pic related).
>>
>>73022722
Your Ableton installation is 32-bit (x86) right?
Did you install the 64-bit (x64) version of those plugins?
If you did this then you may have to uninstall them and install the proper version for them to be compatible.

I don't remember how the installation of these particular two works, so maybe you have both the 32bit and the 64 bit installed.

Try to check if you have a "C:\Program Files (x86)\VstPlugins" folder.
They should be inside of it.

Should I extract all the files in my custom plugins folder to the default vstplugin folder?
>>
>>73023210
You can definitely try.

I don't know if it will work because sometimes programs only work when all the files are in the place they were put in by the installer.

Perhaps try to locate the serum.dll file, make a shortcut out of it (right-click, send to, desktop-create shortcut), and put the shortcut in the folder where the working plugins are.
>>
>>73023286
And what if that doesn't work?
>>
>>73023286
I don't even have a serum.dll file
>>
>>73023351
You can then try to move the files from one folder to the other.

If that doesn't work either, uninstall the plugins and reinstall them by setting it to the right folder.

Don't move it for now.
Make a shortcut and put THAT in the custom vst folder.

To make a shortcut, right-click on the file, then move the mouse over "Send to", and then click on "Desktop (create shortcut)".
This will create a shortcut file on your desktop, which is what you need to move in the custom folder.
>>
>>73023692
Every time you make a change in the plugins folder, you need to click "rescan" in Ableton's preferences.
Did you do that?

Is your Ableton 32bit or 64bit?

Check in the Help>About Live... window

Do you have a serum.dll (that's not 64)?
>>
>>73023781
32bit. the Serum is 64
>>
>>73023800
Then it's not going to be compatible.

If you installed both versions of Serum, try to find the 32bit one and put its shortcut in the custom folder.
>>
>>73023837
Re-installing Ableton, 64 bit this time. If this doesn't work I'm moving to FL
>>
>>73023898
NO, don't do that.
Virtually all plugins have a 32bit version, but not all have a 64bit one.

Leave Ableton's 32bit one and reinstall Serum.
Your Serum installation is the problem. Not Ableton.
>>
>>73023934

>>
>>73024010

>>
>>73024022

>>
>>73024045
Nexus isn't for Ableton. It's just a plugin you can use with whatever DAW.
https://refx.com/nexus/

I don't have it and don't recommend it though.
Get Kontakt instead. It's basically for the same purpose.

Also, I think Nexus is harder to pirate.
>>
>>73024098
I tried getting Kontakt. Same problem I had with Serum lol.
>>
>>73024165
You installed the 64bit version?

hey bros,

I'm thinking of getting a chepo midi keyboard to start composing some simple beats.

I know how to use Ableton, so what keyboard would you recommend that is compatible with it?

ive been looking at:

Samson Graphite M25

Akai LPK 25

Alesis V mini

cause those are around what i'm willing to spend. About 50 bucks.

thanks
>>
>>73024405
oh wow, it works after i downloaded 64 bit, thanks for your help my guy.
>>
>>73024770
Alright, if you made it work, then problem solved.

I just found a .torrent file in my torrents folder.
It's not the version I use, but it should be a trusted one.

If you have problems, you can always try it (if it still has seeders):
http://www94.zippyshare.com/v/M09TAsjB/file.html

Just keep in mind when you get the libraries, that they're not made for a version of Kontakt that's newer than what you have.
>>
>>73024868
Not sure how to add library to Kontakt.
>>
>>73025143
Last time I added one was years ago, so I don't remember well eough to give you instructions.

You can look on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=how+to+add+kontakt+library
>>
>>73025216
Alright. I thought their would be default ones. Also, these Serum synths don't sound too great. lol
>>
>>73025251
I think when you buy it you get a default library or something but obviously they won't include it with each release because it would be too big to download each time (they're made of samples after all).

For Serum there are tons of third party presets (and settings like for its LFOs, wavetables, etc).
If you make EDM, I suggest checking out Cymatics (choose them from their website and donload them from Audioz or fresh-stuff4u.com).
As you go along with music production you'll find presets you like.

I'm not the best person to advise you on that because I like to synthesize everything from scratch (except real instruments obviously).

You can ask in the next thread if anyone can suggest some cool Kontakt libraries or Serum presets.
>>
>>73025390
I'm just looking for that Drake sound really.
>>
>>73025496
I don't really know what you're talking about (I don't listen to hiphop), but you can look for tutorial of people teaching that particular style, and see which sounds they use, then get those.
>>
>>73024497
Don't get the Akai LPK25 two of my friends who have it had the keys break, you're probably good going with the Alesis.

>>73025143
You can either click on add library on the vertical browser to the left or make a quickbrowser drag and drop by right clicking and bringing that up.

>>73025496
Show some examples? It will be beneficial in the long run to learn sound design/synthesis. It's not as hard as people make it out to be, just go through the manual, try to understand what it says and have fun experimenting :)
