What's the difference between FLAC and WAV? And does it matter?

Both are lossless, FLAC is just compressed WAVs so they're slightly smaller.

flac lets other people know not to talk to you

WAV is better for audio editing while FLAC is best suitable for listening/lossless archival.

Literally the same. Instead of using lossy compression algorithms like MP3, FLAC is compressed in the same way as a ZIP file.

FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec.

Free means it both no cost ("free as in beer") and the code behind it is open to modification, copying, etc. ("free as in freedom")

Lossless means if you compress audio with FLAC, no information is lost in the process. As an example, if you compressed audio with MP3, information is lost in the compression process.

Audio is self-evident.

Codec is short for compressor-decompressor, meaning it can be used both to convert audio to FLAC format and audio can be converted from FLAC to another format.
