I'm walking into guitarcenter tomorrow and buying my first electric. I have 500 dollars to buy the guitar, pedals, ect, only thing I don't need to buy is the amp. What do I get tomorrow? Lookin for specific gear recommendations.

Guitarists I like:
Frank Zappa
David Gilmour
Robert Fripp
>>

Stop worrying about pedals so much you idiots. You don't need that right now, spend it all on a decent guitar.

I would get something with humbuckers + a big muff for those creamy lead sounds. I think all three of them have used a variant of a big muff at some point.

What guitar center are you going to, the best deals are usually on used stuff and you can look up their inventory online.

Yeah dude, I love listening to really good creative bassists tear it up. Check out Jaco Pastorius if you want to hear someone play bass to its full potential. Dan Briggs of Between the Buried and Me is one of the most insane modern bassists; listen to his solo "Viridian" on their album "Colors". Matt Freeman's bass playing with Operation Ivy is really melodic and adds a different dimension to the band's sound.

I would recommend learning bass in conjunction with piano/keyboard; it seems the best bass players are also generally good composers who use piano as a writing tool to overcome some of the limits of bass, namely the fairly limited range of the bass and difficulty of playing chords on such thick strings. Well-rounded bass players who have good technique and are well-versed in theory are hard to come by and are that much more valuable for it.

Why do people shit on metal guitars for being one trick ponies but these guitars have an even narrower niche? Why do you guys even like these? Why not a regular strat or gretsch hollowbody? Why be such a special snowflake?

Celestions are the gold standard, and they are priced like it.
I switched to Eminence speakers. Just as good, and a hell of a lot cheaper.

Probably, Satriani's definitely capable or writing bass lines and performing them. Not as much of a Satriani fan though, he just sounds like a significantly less-interesting Steve Vai. I feel like Vai is just a better composer in general because he treats the guitar as just his particular instrument in the larger context of an ensemble, rather than the focal point to the exclusion of all else.

>>

I tend to find him boring. Eric johnson is a little too bland and major key for me. Hes a very competent and technically proficient guitarist but his style doesnt resonate with me
>>
>>72978015
Watch this live performance, especially the minor blues he does around the halfway point. Dude's phrasing is unreal:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZN7Une_0Ic&t=1511s

I actually feel like Satriani is the more boring player, just my opinion though. His tendency to play a lot of major and lydian-sounding melodies is why we have the term "Satrianicore" to describe bands like Polyphia or Chon that play these really linear, major-interval-heavy instrumental pieces that all kind of sound the same after a while.

I also just enjoy Johnson's tone more, the violin-like sound he gets from his Strat really suits his legato playing and gives him a very distinctive sound.
>>
>>72978103
Idk. whatever johnson has to offer me i find it satisfied much better by jeff beck. Did you know tony mcalpine is gonna die soon.
>>
>>72978337
I knew he had been dealing with cancer for a while, I think Vai and a bunch of guys on his label threw a benefit for him a few months back. Shame, great guitar player and underrated keyboardist.

I do enjoy Jeff Beck, although I think Johnson has a more intuitive command over jazz phrasing than Beck does. Beck's finger style playing doesn't sound as smooth to me, either. For that, I like to listen to Richie Kotzen.
>>
>>72978378
I dont think youve heard enough beck then.
>>
Satriani, Eric Johnson, Vai, etc. are all very overrated and up their own asses. Technically, I believe I could mop the floor with any of them and I'm just a bedroom guitarist who's been playing 7 years. Really, name ONE song by any of them that is actually difficult to play...?

The only reason they are even famous is because they were rich enough to spend 5,000 dollars on pedals and all have really big hands. The only true guitarists I can respect are ones like Jimmy Page who have mastered tone, song writing, and sound engineering at a godly level and don't just rely on "muh effects pedals" and "muh 3rd fret to 12th fret stretchy hands technique" to be good

Dude, I love Dave Kilminster. I saw him live when I was 16 when Roger Waters was doing his DSOTM tour and his musicianship absolutely floored me.

>>72978449
Not a huge fan of Satch. And I'll admit I kind of lost interest in Vai for a few years: after I'd been playing three years, I could tap, sweep, and knew a whole bunch of different minor scales so I could do a pretty good impression of his playing and nothing about him was super technically impressive to me after that. But think about the level of musicianship necessary to hang with a guy like Frank Zappa, or the discipline involved in composing for a full orchestra like on the second half of the "Sound Theories" album. After about a decade of playing guitar, those thoughts drew me back to Vai's work and the elements of his relationship to the guitar. He's one of the most endlessly creative musicians alive right now, and I think that he's just been trying to do as much as he can with his craft as possible. And clearly he doesn't care too much about what his detractors have to say about it. Dude is fucking Steve Vai, he can do whatever he wants.

That's why we had ordered some, but it was a real disappointment.

The guitars all had a choked nasally sound in the middle and bridge positions, and the neck was muddy. The "dry switch" probably has something to do with the terrible sounding electronics, but I don't know for sure.

The necks felt pretty nice, between a 60s and 59 Gibson neck as far as size goes. Fretboards were dry and gross feeling, and the aforementioned fret problems just made a few of them unplayable.

I don't think we just happened to get 25 lemons.

What are the best $250-300 acoustic guitars?

I feel youre too caught up in trying to look a certain way. Start off basic and standard with like seymour duncan jbs
>>
>>72984960
I'm not fussed on how it looks, I just seriously don't like the feel of a Les Paul after playing one for 4 years or a strat after 10, and love the feel of a Tele. It could be pink and shaped like an enormous penis if it was comfortable to play and sounded decent

whats a pick that sound like the fenders but dont break as easily?

>>72984796
maybe a paf type pickup?
maybe a duncan 59, with a 250k pot to sound proper
>>
>>72985169
I'm a big proponent of the Gibson M picks, but I can only find listings for them online where they come in those little tins, and I already have 3 of those and don't want any more

Yeah I'm reading up on Gibson pickups now, it's a bit of a mine-field. I want a nice, big, controlled distorted sound like (just as an example) American Idiot [obviously a lot of the sound of that album is production, but something -like- that)
I could also go for something a bit more vintage sounding like The Police, but I'm leaning more towards a modern sound honestly
I know I don't want active pickups because in my experience they're pretty gash
>>
>>72985169
You mean 500k
>>
>>72985264
american idiot was recorded with a les paul jr, with p90 pickup´
i suggest to get a duncan JB or some hot p90

>>72985407
no, 250k cause the 59 can be too bright and teles are bright themselves
or get like a gibson 57 thats not so bright
>>
>>72985458
Then you mean 500k. Youre confusing the 2. Humbuckers dont sound good with 250k. They sound thin and bright.
>>
>>72985458
I have an Epi LPJ which is absolutely pants and sounds like shit. P90s confuse me because like they're single coils, right? How do they get such a controlled sound out of single coils? I'm really interested in the actual bucking of the hum and quelling of the feedback afforded by humbuckers
>>
>>72985476
youre confusing
less k's filters more treble
single coils sound too bright with 500k and are usually used with 250k pots
buckers are naturally muddier and are usually used with 500k (gibson been using 300k lately for some reason)

Zappa loved Pignose amps, and they're great amps in the studio when you have them dialed in right.

do people pick with just a tiny tip of the pick, when picking it 90º to the strings? i.e. not slanted

been trying to learn thumbpicking, and realized i was slanted picking with it, so i started doing it square angle to the strings to get more attack and punch, but it was a though physical resistance and i can't sweep picking stuff like vid below that way, so i noticed i was picking with a huge amount of the pick, thats probably "wrong" and i should practice hitting with just the tip of the pick. is that right, is that why i'm having this problem? thinkin thats also why i break regular picks often

>>72985557
probably compression would do that with single coils

I play with picks on electric guitar only, and some electric songs I play with my thumb and index fingerpicking style.

According to some interviews he splits his signal in two, I think that might be more important to get the same sound. Inquisition does the same, back when I saw them live the guitarist had one 6x10 on the scene he was using, no clue what run through it.
Also his 10 string probably plays a big part in his sound.

I've got a Shawbucker in my pimped up partscaster, it's an excellent low output humbucker but if you really want a humbucker that's voiced to work well with single coils then I would recommend ...

Guys, where do you get guitar tabs?
I can't find anything worthwhile, everything is tabbed for electric guitars, I just want to find tabs made for fingerpicking.

so turns out the last guy to own my Hot Rod Deluxe took out the 6L6's and put in EL34's even though the grid resistors and the bias weren't correct for them.

should i just put 6L6's back? i guess i'd have to change a bunch of shit to keep the EL34's
>>
>>72986414
a quick wank
>>
>>72986749
>should i just put 6L6's back?

Yes, you should do that immediately. The grid resistors aren't critical but with the bias set too low you run a chance of the amp drawing too much anode current and blowing the HT fuse.

Whoever swapped the tubes without changing the bias is a fucking idiot.
>>
>>72986806
well the filter caps were fucked so the guy obviously didn't give a shit or know anything about the amp (not that i do either but i at least wouldn't go fucking around with it)

do you think with the bias set higher the HRD would sound good with EL-34s? I know they're used for marshalls a lot. idk why this guy changed them in the first place
>>
>>72986749
grid stops just kill noise, blocking, and rf.

If they bias up and the extra filament doesn't take the secondary of the PT, you're good to go I guess.
>>
>>72986896
sorry i don't know what any of this means. what's the secondary of the PT?

and are you saying the grid resistor being wrong doesn't matter?
>>
>>72986860
Amps always sound better with EL34s, properly biased. Well, that's my opinion anyway.

The problem with EL34s in Fender amps is the bias circuit for 6L6 tubes is designed to supply around -37 Volts and can't supply the -45 Volts needed for EL34s. People tend to turn the pot as far as it can go, then leave it around -40V but that's not a great idea either. The tubes will run hot and there's less current limiting resistance before the grids. Most of the time the bias is generated from a winding on the HT transformer so it's difficult to upgrade without fitting a small bias transformer. If you seriously want EL34s in your amp then that's the "pro" option. Otherwise, set it back to stock 6L6s. Because the average guitar player doesn't know enough about tube amps to modify them.

>A wild ill-informed idiot appears

We're not talking about grid stoppers, we're talking about the HT dropping resistors for the screen grid.

>If they bias up

bias down, just saying

>and the extra filament

There is no extra filemant you moron. I'm guessing you copied that from some website about fitting an extra gain stage.

> doesn't take the secondary of the PT

How does an extra heater "take" the PT secondary?

You don't have the faintest idea what you're talking about. So hush now, grownups are speaking.
>>
>>72986935
>Amps always sound better with EL34s, properly biased. Well, that's my opinion anyway.

What's the difference, tone-wise? I've heard it's less clean
>>
>>72986925
The filament side of the power transformer. 34s take 1.5a where as 6l6s take .9a. So that's a good amount of extra 6.3v. Sometimes a manufacturer will tell you it's cool, and other times guys just go for it. I don't know of an easy way of testing other than maybe feeling if the iron gets hot.

Grid resistors help amplifier stability, but there's a pretty good range of working values. They're in the way of the bias so obviously you need to make sure the tubes aren't pulling too much current.
>>
>>72987038
If you listen to a loud clean Marshall and a loud clean Fender the difference is obvious immediately. The EL34s just seem to have a bit more blast to them, especially if you use really good tubes like Winged C's.

Incidentally, if you've got EL34s in a Fender amp and the bias is wrong then switch the amp on and have a good look at the tubes. Look for signs of the internal grids lighting up orange (not the central heater, look at the the spiral wires surrounding the cathodes). If the grids are glowing, turn the amp off and fit 6L6s. And if you see the anode plates lighting up after a few seconds or minutes then that's another indication the bias is wrong.

Red plating - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SfJJ8A8XNM

Can't find any video or images of grid glowing but you should only see one glowing orange element per tube, if there's more then the amp's underbiased and drawing too much HT current.
>>
>>72987170
oh it's definitely underbiased. i was just wondering what the difference is tone-wise

i think i'm just going to switch back to 6L6's. don't wanna go through the trouble
>>
>>72987149
>I don't know of an easy way of testing

How about a fucking multimeter set to measure current you fucking moron?

Seriously, stop talking about shit you don't understand. Stop trying to quote shit you half-remember from other websites.
>>
>>72987235
lol this spurge

I'm going to have you come over and test transformer coil VA with a multimeter.
