ITT: we talk about
Gothic Rock
Post-Punk
Cold Wave
Dark Wave
Ethereal Wave
Gloomy New Wave
No Wave
Deathrock
Industrial Music
Post-Industrial
Horror Punk
Psychobilly
Gothabilly
And related styles. To answer these questions now:
Darkcore, metal, and freak folk are not /dark/. Nick Cave, Depeche Mode, Neofolk, Leonard Cohen, Iggy Pop's idiot album and anything that serves as a precursor to these styles (The Doors, Yoko Ono, John Cage, The Velvet Underground, and so on) are.

Start with essential shit like the three albums by The Curr after their first one, listen to "Closer" by Joy Division, try "JuJu" by Siouxsie and the Banshees, then "Talk About The Weather" by Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, then after you've heard all the Post-Punk oriented Goth, go to second wave gothic rock with Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, and Danse Society.

Currently relistening Blitzkid's discography thanks to the one Anon a few threads ago who wanted me to explain horrorpunk to him. Have to say they are much more "horror punk" than Misfits and have done more to develop the post-2000s sound of the genre. They mix the sounds of Danzig + Graves era Misfits extremely well.

>>72941169
Neofolk is not really a precursor of those styles, it's a prominent form of post-industrial...

This. All this purism is completely out of place. Metal and goth culture are inseparable in real life and there is a lot of crossover. Ghost can be considered /dark/ simply for their un-metal pop appeal and aesthetic. Although I don't think they should be posted either way since they fucking suck.

have you ever gone to a metal or a goth show i mean come on. especially black metal.

related, there's a project called Liar In Wait that has members from a few metal bands that draws heavy inspiration from Soror Dolorosoa and Asylum Party. Material's not as polished as it should be, but the upcoming full length is supposed to be a lot more well thought out, at least according to what I heard from the principal songwriter.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH_LHSHCvps

Another rec, too. Saw these guys play with Chelsea Wolfe last time she toured the west coast USA and they killed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsju5wQQml4
>>
>>72945096
Are you kidding? That chart is literally the foundation of the subculture.
>>
>>72945033
>>72945050
>>72945077
Do you know any actual goths in real life? They are not that uncommon here. Go figure, we still host the biggest Goth festivals worldwide. Crossover with metal, especially folk/pagan/black metal is a thing, hence the constant presence of such bands at gothic festivals. I'm not talking about lone internet goths like you guys here, this is about people who actually partake in goth culture, which is inseparable from metal culture.
>>
>>72945101
Nah. APC is closer but still no cigar. Kinda have to be underground otherwise why make such a broad thread.
>>
>>72945128
>here
I mean Germany.
>>
>>72945110
Metalheads usually don't associate with goths. Black metal shares some aesthetic qualities, but the culture is totally separate from anything goth.
>>
>>72945111
Doesn't mean everyone who gets into a band in one of the genres we talk about here has to listen to every single album on it just to say they did. If you already have an idea as to what style you like then you don't need that vague chart.
>>
>>72944993
me too senpai. some of their really early shit sounds way too much like misfits though. their first demo is pretty much green day + misfits which isn't too bad.
>>
>>72945128
Yes I do fag, crossover doesn't mean they go in tandem, it means a bunch of people with common interests from both sides congregate but neither are tied. Metal even existed before Goth, there's no fucking way they go together because death/doom metal enthusiasts wear makeup.
>>
>>72945139
Like I said, that's not been my experience at all. Anywhere I've been with any sort of /dark/ and/or metal scene has a ton of crossover at events and shows and people I've met have always had mutual friends in both scenes. Maybe that hasn't been your experience, but like it or not, extreme metal and goth is intertwined in many ways.
>>
>>72945167
It really isn't, as is the old goth addage:
"Just because it's played at a Goth club, doesn't make it Goth."
>>
>>72945128
...and industrial metal of course. Lots of crossover.

>>72945153
what >>72945167 said. Obviously crossover exists or pagan and industrial metal bands wouldn't play at goth festivals and gothic metal wouldn't exist. You'll find plenty of people belonging to both cultures without perceiving them as separate. There exists a culture in-between that can be extended either way. Out of curiosity, where do you live?
>>
>>72945191
USA in a place with a thriving Goth scene.
>>
>>72945191
They play those festivals because it brings in money, not because of an inherent connection. The closest Goth and metal get is Christian Death citing Black Sabbath as an influence.
>>
>>72945110
C'mon anon. You should've worded it better.

>>72945128
There is L I T E R A L L Y a goth club in my city.
The ONLY cross over are people into both music, and shitty metal bands that don't know what they are yet.

>the biggest Goth festivals worldwide
If you're talking about Merra Luna, then no shit you see metal bands there. They'll fucking let any alternative music band play at these fucking festivals. Meraluna was fucking headlining KORN this year. FUCKING KORN. They had no reason to be there. Fucking Dark Funeral was playing Wave Gotik Treffen last year. I love Dark Funeral, but what were they doing there.

Goth is rock. Metal is a separate thing. The only reason the goth subculture has been playing host to stuff like EBM, Aggrotech, Industrial, and metal genres is because there are people that like both and want to hear/experience them at the same place.
>>
>>72945213
Okay, let's chalk it up to regional differences. Here in Germany and most of Europe the two are joined.
>>
>>72945239
Can't let you do that, just because people over there choose to associate doesn't establish subcultural connections.
>>
>>72945235
Here, this will be shorter and probably be easier to understand.

It's like this thread. There is a reason it is /dark/ and not /goth/. Because people want to listen to/discuss more than just goth. Other genres that they like that are dark alternative music.

Not because they are all heavily intertwined.
>>
>>72945251
Let me rephrase:
Doesn't establish written in stone connections. Goth is gloomy rock from the 70s, metal is intense guitar music from the 60s. One came from Blues as a concert culture, the other from Punk as an English club culture. They are fundamentally different.
>>
>>72945258
Metal is not dark alternative though, it's its own seperate spectrum and scene. The /dark/-est metal gets is Industrial metal, but it still remains another world of music entirely.
>>
>>72945191
As a death/black metal enthusiast in the US, I haven't noticed any overlap between the subcultures. Death metal surely has nothing at all to do with goth generally.
>>
>>72945304

>>72945251
>choose to associate
>doesn't establish subcultural connections
What do you think a subculture is? It's not some abstract concept, it's a group of people. I don't know how else to tell you this but metal and goth subculture are heavily intertwined, there is constant exchange between the two, thesocial circles are joined. This necessarily reflects in the musical realm with musicians from both more or less clearly defined genres incorporating elements of the other.

>>72945273
I am not saying they are the same but this is not the 60s and 70s. Amalgamations of these and other genres exist, even if the result are shit like Rob Zombie and The 69 Eyes.

>>72945308
True, I'm not saying all metal is part of goth culture obviously.

>>72945258
this. my phrasing is irrelevant to the thread at hand. most of what i listen to is /dark/. a lot of what else i listen to is metal. and a lot of it has feet in both sides. as such i'll post recs and discuss what fits the theme of the thread in terms of aesthetic and attitude. Anyone who doesn't like it, eat it. Obviously we're not going to discuss fucking Autopsy in these threads, I mean get real, but sure as shit bands like Spektr or Pinkish Black are going to get mentioned eventually.

that being said, the following is a collaboration between the vocalist of Draconian and a member of several metal and post-rock bands including Crippled Black Phoenix. Elements of dream pop and dark ambient. One of my favourite EPs of the past few years.

Yeah, a group of people that listen to goth rock, post-punk, deathock, darkwave. The rest is bonus.

>The 69 Eyes
We don't say that name around these here parts.
>>
>>72945340
Again, the crossover doesn't make them intertwined, there are set boundaries for these fundamentally different people and are both distinguised.
>>
>>72945426
No, that is simply incorrect. You don't know how subcultures work.
>>
What the fuck do you mean by intertwined?

I think this is the problem here.
>>
>>72945340
>there is constant exchange between the two, thesocial circles are joined.
Most metal guys who are an active part of the subculture and not just tourists wouldn't be caught dead associating with anything labeled goth.
>>
>>72945436
Motherfucker, that's exactly how subcultures work. Goth belongs to dark culture and exists as an offshoot of Punk, metal came from blue rock and hard rock and has established itself as its own cultural spectrum entirely. Just because some Black Sabbath fans and Sisters of Mercy fans happen to be at the same festival doesn't make them "intertwined."
>>
>>72945486
That sounds more like you're talking about music genres. You should read up on subculture theory.

>>72945453
Cultural markers, how do they work?

I'm tired of this argument, I'll go listen to some music now.
>>
>>72945517
kek
>>
>>72945517
The culture is defined by the genre and exists as a physical representation of enthusiasts for the style of music. That being said, there will always be boundaries dividing Goths and Metalheads.
>>
Where are all the industrialists anyway? It's mostly been goths and that one moron who thinks goth and metal cultures are inherently linked.

>>
>>72947797
>metal and its culture has gone more experimental
yeah but we're just starting to grow out of that phase. When the whole avant-garde experimental boundary-pushing thing gets stale, all that remains is metal-thrashin' mad oldschool 1st-wave blackened pizzadeath motörspeed crust-n-roll turboriffs with phlegm-heavy throat-rasping ÖOGH vocals.
And also glam and power metal I guess.

Goths grew out of experimentalism in the late 2000s when they saw that it had mostly resulted in mallgoth nonsense.

So at the end of the day both scenes end up connecting a lot through their roots.

>>
>>72949421
>not understanding subcultural differences
This always was a terrible board.
>>
>>72949420

But Japanese vocals won't ever come close to the soft and haunting style of white goth music.

They can make good shoegaze but not the kind of goth music we're talking about.
>>
>>72949448
>This always was a terrible board.
Agreed
>>
>>72949410
non-whites tend to be very neutral about the goth subculture. A few are enthusiastic about it, most just dismiss it as silly, but none of them hate it.

Those who hate the goth subculture are overwhelmingly white, either because they think it's creepy or because they think it's gay. Non-whites don't get offended by it.
>>
>>72949435
Not really, they like aping old sounds and erroneously claiming spooky edm is goth.
>>
>>72949388
Mostly whites then. Can we at least agree that Neofolk is made by whites?
>>
>>72949465
You mean the "goth crooner" vocals?
Yeah it's true that I've rarely heard it in Japanese goth music (unless you count Dir en Grey). However that's not a requirement, they can easily do the decadent gay Rozz Williams vocals and that works just as well.
>>
>>72949478
But that's a far cry from post-punk and goth rock revivalism.
>>
>>72949448
>not understanding subculture theory
Not really a 4chan-exclusive problem but hey, you're probably studying real science like economics instead.
>>
>>72949420
Well a lot of goth comes from vampire fiction. Before Kei took over goth that was what multiple Japanese goth bands based their lyricism on. The aesthetic was very European too, specifically getting inspiration from early baroque up to the late 1800s when Dracula was written. A lot of crosses and that sort of shit.
>>
>>72949486
Idk anon, Hispanics are en masse socially right wing so I'm certain there's an obscure Hispanic Neofolk artist somewhere.
>>
>>72949495

I'll have to get back to you. Dir en gay just sounds like hair metal to me.

Yes the crooner vocals. To me, that sound is made by and only white peoples.
>>
>>72949550
Dir en Grey went through a lot of phases, their recent output includes soft haunting vocals.

But yeah I guess the goth crooner vocals are specifically a white thing. But it's just a tiny part of goth stuff.

>>72949533
I've always found that 80s goth visuals were more inspired by expressionism than by dark romanticism, to be honest.
>>
>>72949511
Aping old sounds is in reference to said revivalism.
>>
>>72949550
Not even sure what that means. I mean, do you even have any examples of what jap goth bands you've listened to?

>>72949596
>I've always found that 80s goth visuals were more inspired by expressionism than by dark romanticism, to be honest.
I was talking about the jap goth bands. If you translate their lyrics and look at them, those are the themes they got attached to, because they couldn't understand the English themes. You see a lot of that in Mexico too.
>>
>>72949613
yeah but here's the thing: either they completely suck at revivalism, or they aren't actually trying to revive post-punk and goth rock. Cause most of what I've seen get praised by tumblrgoths are shitty EDM and soundcloud rap with an edgy aesthetic and lots of reverb. And occasionally shit like Vampire Weekend.

Either way it doesn't change the fact that 80s worship is the best approach.
>>
>>72949666
Nice trips, but the issue is that the concept of revivalism is doomed because you end up making something different.
>>
>>72949655

Jap goth isn't goth goth. The language is different for one.

And no I don't, because it doesn't exist. Do you see any "foreign" goth music being posted here? You don't, and there's a reason for it.

"Dark" lyrics doesn't make it goth.
>>
Jap goth is just emulating the real thing.

They make good shoegaze though.

>>

>>
>>72949719
That's your opinion and it's wrong. Innovation is only worthwhile if it actually sounds at least as good as what came before. Most of the time it doesn't hold up and its only appeal comes from novelty value, which is short-lived.

And it just so happens to be that 80s goth rock still sounds good, but that since its repertoire isn't unlimited, the best we can legitimately hope from the scene is to keep indefinitely producing more 80s goth rock.

>>72949689
the formula they're trying to follow is loose enough to last a few more decades (if not centuries) before it's completely exhausted. It's less doomed than innovationism, which is built upon the misconception that things can get stale for everyone forever. Which is proven wrong by the existence of revivalism.

Yeah they can. An opinion is a belief, which can be formalized as a statement, which either matches the facts, or doesn't. Even if it's not effectively falsifiable, it's still something you think is the case. If it's not the case, then it's wrong.

You're trying way too hard to assert your ideas as objective truth and it's not working. If I think revivalism isn't the way to go then I'm neither right nor wrong given music is subjective to begin with. The only way I could have a wrong opinion is if I have a factually incoreect belief that I assert as an opinion, which I have not.

fuck no, taste is subjective, music is very much an object that can be accurately described. Taste isn't whether something is good or not, it's whether you like something or not.

You're confusing a lot of shit right now, you're confusing taste, opinions, and music quality.

And since it's quite clear that your belief is factually incorrect, your opinion is wrong.

No. Your preference is "80s circlejerking FEELS dull to me", which is an illusion.
"I think 80s circlejerking is dull" is your opinion, and it's counter-factual.

I'm not being tryhard, just using words the correct way instead of arbitrarily assigning meaning to them.

For example
>art is subjective.
is an arbitrary qualification. There are tons of ways to objectively determine what art is and isn't.

And I'm not being buttmad, just assertive and peremptory. It results in a dry writing style but I assure you I'm certainly not angrier than you are.

Simply put, there's a right in this discussion (my opinion) and a wrong (your opinion), and all your attempts to prove otherwise rely on grossly incorrect semantics.

IIRC there was some controversy surrounding Killing Joke and their politics in the mid-80s as a result of some of the shit they said in interviews and them recording Love Like Blood, a song that was an ode to Yukio Mishima, a highly conservative, highly traditionalist Japanese writer(and also one of the most celebrated writers of the 20th century, whose work is respected by plenty of people who don't share his political convictions).

I think that comment had more to do with Eldritch wanting to trip up the competition than with him genuinely believing KJ to be fascists desu.

>just like it's okay to like your first two albums and nothing you've put out afterwards

it's not just okay, it's mandatory.

I mean his early stuff wasn't stellar but there were some strong tunes. Now it's just flaccid futurepop.

Tbh. He had potential back then. Shame

I wouldn't even call his new stuff futurepop.

He's a real drama queen on Facebook too

I recently just found back this little thing.

It's from a christian industrial rock band that largely imitates early Marilyn Manson. Mostly influenced by Portrait and ACSS, but with clumsy vocals and demo-quality production. And bible-thumping rants during their shows.

still good stuff for early Manson fanboys.
