Fucking Lil Peep is more emo than MCR. I guess MCR's lyrics are kinda depressing but their music is far from emo. Just look at this quote from Gerard Way:

tbf a ton of artists reject their genre labels. the fact that that type of sound is what most people would think of when you mention 'emo' is enough to make them emo, even if a somewhat different genre of the same name existed before. it's not like terms can't have multiple context-dependent definions
